I wanted to do a ritual to honor my ancestors for this, my first Samhain as a witch.
I worked with co-pilot to come up with my ritual and incantation. I’m sharing it here. Please feel free to use it if you wish.
Simple Ritual to Honor Ancestors at Samhain
A Gentle Ceremony and Incantation for Remembering Ancestral Spirits
Introduction
Samhain, celebrated on October 31, marks a sacred time when the veil between worlds is thinnest. Many witches honor their ancestors during this festival, expressing gratitude and remembrance. This simple ritual requires minimal tools and can be performed alone or with loved ones.
Preparation
- Choose a quiet, undisturbed space for your ritual.
- Gather a small candle (white or black is traditional), a photo or memento of your ancestor(s), and a small offering (such as bread, fruit, or a favorite drink of your ancestor).
- Optional: incense (sage, myrrh, or frankincense), and a bowl of water or salt for purification.
Ritual Steps
- Cleanse Your Space:
- Light the incense and gently waft the smoke around your ritual area, saying:
- “With smoke and scent, I cleanse this space, all negativity now I erase.”
- Set Up Your Altar:
- Place the candle in the center. Arrange the photo or memento and offering nearby.
- Light the Candle:
- As you light the candle, focus on your intention to honor your ancestors.
- Call to the Ancestors:
- Hold the photo or memento. Take a few deep breaths and feel your connection to your lineage.
- Recite the Incantation:
“Beloved ancestors, spirits of my blood and bone,
On this Samhain night, I welcome you home.
I honor your wisdom, your stories, your love,
May your blessings surround me as stars above.
From ancient roots to present day,
I remember, I cherish, I honor, I pray.
Blessed be.” - Offerings:
- Place the offering on your altar, saying:
“This gift I leave, in love and respect, for those who came before.” - Close the Ritual:
- Sit quietly for a few moments. Thank your ancestors for their presence. Extinguish the candle, knowing the connection remains.
After the Ritual
Allow the offering to remain on your altar for a day or two, then return it to the earth, if possible, with thanks. Carry the warmth of your ancestors’ memory with you as Samhain continues.
Here’s a photo of my ritual space.
My ancestors in the photos - on the left are my paternal grandparents, the photo in the middle is me and dad with my mum, who has passed (dad is 96 and still going) on the right is my maternal grandmother, with my aunt and one of my cousins.
The music I was listening to was this one on Youtube. https://youtu.be/L84m520dCSY?si=yzxdxzUfg0fOuXSB
