I downloaded 26 freebies in the witchcraft section alone! That was before I heard that AI is publishing books now. 
I’ll have to be more careful to research my authors, not just the subjects which interest me.

Right!? There are a ton of AI-generated books on the market these days. Some e-publishers like Amazon KDP and B&N are trying to crack down (either requiring AI books to be labelled as such, or banning them outright) and I can see why. After all, if you don’t mind AI writing, why wouldn’t you have AI just generate a book for you? I don’t get why anyone would knowingly pay for someone else’s AI generated content when it’s easy and free to generate for yourself 
Regardless, any trustworthy author will be upfront about their content. And you’re right about the research! A little search can go a long way. I recommend checking their website, their social media presence, and looking at their catalog of works. If there is no digital footprint, their books cover a crazy range of different subjects, and the cover art looks like AI - those are all things to be aware of
