I’ve never had chipmonks in the house that I know of. My last trip to Indiana, I had a bird feeder outside my bedroom window. One morning, I opened the windows to find the feeder looked funny. A chipmonk had squeezed in between the panes of glass to get as many seeds as he could and couldn’t get out again!
That I know of… One apartment complex I lived in was made of cement brick- the type with two holes in the middle. One spring, my kitchen smelled like something had died. Since it was an internal room and I couldn’t find anything in the cupboards, I figure some rodent had crawled into the bricks for the winter and never came out.
That complex wasn’t known for rodents, though I did have a squirrel who acted as my weather forcaster and would feed the birds. He also warned the neighborhood if there were a raptor around. As a weatherman, he would flatten himself on the porch if it were going to be hot out and climb my screen door if it were going to get cold. I was sorry to leave him behind when I moved. I could sit just inside the screen and talk to him while he ate. Once, he was sitting in the bird feeder when a sparrow flew up. The sparrow actually asked him for food, and the squirrel poured an armload of seed outside the bowl for the bird! Of course, this squirrel didn’t empty the feeder like the chipmonk did, so I didn’t mind him coming for food.
