Create Sacred Space:
Cleanse your space with smoke (sage, incense, or palo santo) or sprinkle salt water around your altar. Call in the elements or your protective spirits if part of your practice.

Light the Candle: Say: "With this flame, I shine a light for the soul that walks beyond the veil. May they journey in peace, held by love, remembered well."

Place Their Photo or Belonging: Gently hold it and remember a warm memory or speak to them aloud: "You are gone from sight, but never from heart.Your spirit lingers in love, in stars, in art. I honor your memory, I carry your name.Though you are changed, you are not lost to flame."

Add the Herbs to the Bowl of Water: Sprinkle the rosemary or lavender into the bowl and say: “With herb and water, I call on peace. Let grief find gentleness. Let love never cease.”

Write a Message:
Write a short message to your loved one — a memory, gratitude, or something you wish you could say. Fold it.

Burn the Message (safely):
Say: “As this paper turns to ash, My words take wing, Carried to the realm where ancestors sing.

Place the ashes in the water, or scatter them outside later.

Close the Spell:
Thank the spirits, elements, or energies you called. Blow out the candle and sit in silence for a few minutes, listening or feeling any messages or comfort that might come through.

re: Create a small ancestor altar for continued connection

I want to do this. The ‘ofrenda’, often seen in Mexico, is an example of what I want to do. The movie ‘Coco’ had a lot of the plot around the idea of the ofrenda. They can get elaborate but mine will be modest.

Thank you for this idea. I have, through a bit of fumbling that worked out, started recognizing my loved ones who have passed. I need to step up my game a bit and your post motivates me.
