Squirrels & Norse Mythology

Wow… this idea of a squirrel as a rascal messenger got me talking to the AI about how the birds of Odin and the squirrel in Yggdrasil were different/alike. The AI suggested I make a card that had the two side by side and ponder which messenger I was listening to. So I asked the AI to make a card and this is what came up. This would be a cute Oracle deck.

I’m reading up on Norse mythology now, he sounds like fun!

I kept wanting to do read up but always got confused with the names and exploits. They are a strange group. @tracyS is the true enthusiast. It is finally coming to me and it is getting exciting.

I could rattle on forever about how the light-bulb came on. The mythology gets more interesting and even follows a recognizable path as I explore it.

Yeah, I’m getting into Irish mythology and trying to figure out who is who and get the names right is difficult. That’s why I was taking a break.

Plus, I realized that most of what I know of Norse mythology comes from the MCU. And Hagar the Horrible. Not much, in other words. LOL!

The MCU has many of the names but they all got Hollywoodised. Hel and Fenrir in the Ragnarok movie for instance. For that matter Ragnarok itself was given so much makeup it was barely recognizable.

Plus, there’s the whole Loki as Thor’s brother and not Odin’s. They didn’t get into Balor at all, and you’d think they would, the way they mention Loki’s bad deeds.

My poor beastie gets such a bad rap, but I don’t think he cares, it’s free press and he looks soooo handsome in that blacksuit, he caught all the ladies. :winking_face_with_tongue: Very Loki

It’s wild how they mixed all the family groups, but hey I think the Norse crew enjoy the films as much as we do, they’re not really sticklers for rules if the myths are anything to go by. And I think Thor appreciates they left the “him in a wedding dress” scene out, oh my, that’s the funniest of the myths.

The deep-dive into squirrels and Norse Mythology is a great discussion, so I hope no one minds that I upgraded it to a space of its own from the daily visitors discussion. Please feel free to continue exploring here!

Love this card - his facial expression is hilarious! :chipmunk:

If it makes you feel any better, there’s a BIG section of fandom that fixes that. I’m a FrostIron fan, so yeah, Loki may have done all those things, but only after years of being frustrated in Thor’s shadow and being put down. That’s how I see it goes in the movies at least!

Yeah, fandom loves a Chaotic!Loki, who is more neutral to good, is still playing pranks, kicking butt, and being chaotic, but on the side of good.

Oh, he’ll stab Thor in the side, but they’re brothers! He’ll hear,l and it’s all in good fun! :winking_face_with_tongue:

Ooh look we got our own spot. That mischief maker Ratatoskr is moving around the coven like it’s his own personal Yggdrasil :joy:

He was species AND gender fluid - all the ladies is true!

His offspring, some he birthed himself, were often quite remarkable. They all fold into the story. I don’t give Loki a lot of slack - but he is (was) what he is.

I think the 8 legged horse he birthed is why the AIs can’t get horse’s legs right.

Oh this made me laugh out loud. The first time i got interested in AI generated art, I was amazed at the number extra or missing legs it gave me.

To understand Loki, or any of the gods from Norse, I’ve learnt, you need to step beyond the poems of the Eddas and delve into the mysteries behind the poems, with a dab of physics, The Menshikova school explains his purpose well within the myth, (I’ve added a link below to her blogs on him I think ) as do several other works I’ve read. I’ve attached some other links to a post I did a long time ago called Loki’s Tales, that dig deeper into the trickster and why Odin picked him. It’s interesting as someone who mixes with the Heathen community, how Loki is mistrusted, feared, hated or just plain ignored, (and sometimes for good reason) but we forget, Odin who is the most revered god of the Norse Pantheon, chose Loki to make a blood pact with. This was a huge deal in the Norse, and reflects the need for Order and Chaos to be closely and eternally linked. As this is a Norse post I’m going to big up the beasty  yes I’m biased lol but hey, someone’s got to give him a little bit of good press, :person_shrugging: even if he’s difficult to defend sometimes :rofl::winking_face_with_tongue:

Oh, certainly. He wasn’t all mischief or evil. He was very sensitive and helpful. But he was chaotic. He is likely the most fascinating character in the whole pantheon. He certainly gets the attention. However, with his wild swings, he tends to dominate the discussions and there are some very poignant and illuminating stories from characters that are more minor.

His method of placating Skadi was hilarious if a bit cringenworthy (tug of war with a goat tied to his sensitive parts). But Skadi’s story could be made into a movie. It has all the parts - shock, loss, revenge, unrequited or murky ending. Nicholas Sparks could have written it.

Edit: Okay, maybe Nicholas Sparks in cooperation with Quentin Tarantino.

Who would play Skadi? She’s an incredible goddess, In fact the Vanir and giants need a bigger spotlight fullstop. Their stories are wonderful, and very relevant to today’s world I think. Now who has Peter Jackson’s number, there’s an epic saga to be made here.

Skadi should be played by Amber Heard. She goes though hell to do right but is flawed and ends up getting married (briefly) based on the looks of a man’s feat (feet).

I had a representation of Skadi in my Norse deck. It showed a bitter and slightly evil image. I decided to change it so it showed a nicer image - but still carrying a whip (her card designation is Whip).

Amber would be great. I like the second card, much softer and adds a regal quality to her I think.
