Sugilite is a rare mineral known for its distinctive purple color, which can range from pale lavender to deep violet and reddish purple. A cyclosilicate mineral, sugilite was first identified in Japan and was named after Japanese geologist Ken-ichi Sugi, who helped describe it.
Much of the gem-quality sugilite used in jewelry has come from deposits in South Africa, where manganese contributes to its characteristic coloration. Its rarity, vivid hues, and polished appearance have made sugilite especially valued as a collector’s stone and ornamental gemstone.
