Inspired by all the nice comments on my previous topic about the infinity symbol, and with National Friendship Day just around the corner, I thought it’d be cool to explore some friendship symbols.
Friendship Day
Where I’m from in Argentina, Friend’s Day (July 20th), or “el día del amigo”, is a big deal. In the US, I haven’t noticed it being so influential but it does have an official date (first Sunday in August).
Many places like South Asia and South America have fun customs to celebrate it, usually with meals, parties and gift exchanges.
In fact, in 2011, the United Nations began its recognition of the International Day of Friendship, which runs along the same vein and is celebrated a few days sooner than National Friendship Day.
Symbols of Friendship
I researched these, which can be useful for anyone working with sigils, wanting to use them for a friendship spell, a gift, tattoo, or just something to show some love.
Claddagh Ring
This Irish gem features a heart (for love), a crown (for loyalty), and hands (for friendship). It’s basically the ultimate friendship symbol. If you’re looking to cast a friendship spell, drawing inspiration from the Claddagh’s elements could add a potent personal touch.
There are many examples if you browse Google images or Pinterest for inspiration. Here are some versions (from simple to more complex) that I found on Canva.
Interlocking Hearts
This one’s a no-brainer – two hearts, one bond. The symbol of interlocking hearts beautifully represents a close and unbreakable connection. Interlocking hearts can be used in jewelry, tattoos, or other personal items to symbolize the enduring bond between friends.
Infinity Symbol
You all know this one – it’s classic and perfect for signifying eternal friendship. I like the version that includes a heart, as it adds an extra layer of warmth and connection. For those like me who like to use powerful symbols in their work, incorporating the infinity symbol can be a good way to infuse a spell with the energy of never-ending connection.
Handshake of Affection
This symbolizes mutual respect, trust, and affection. I saw this symbol on a pendant at a local craft fair, and it struck me as a powerful representation of friendship – two hands coming together in a handshake that makes one heart. It speaks to a gesture of true friendship: always giving a hand, but a hand full of heart.
So, this coming first Sunday of August is more than just another day. It’s the perfect opportunity to reach out to old friends, new friends, and even those you see every day of the week, and do something that celebrates what friendship means.
Plan a fun outing, a movie night, or just have a heart-to-heart over coffee, but make sure to celebrate the amazing bonds of friendship!
