The art of Mermaiding

So, I did a thing some time ago, coming in contact with my inner sea witch.

Have you ever heard of Mermaiding? It is the practice of wearing, and often swimming in, mermaid tail. It can be both a profession and a hobby, with professional mermaids often swim in live, filmed, or photographed productions or shows and can be hired for special events. :mermaid:t2:

and check this docuseries from Netflix

Here is us trying to swim xD

If you ever get the chance to visit Weeki Wachee Springs in Florida, they have mermaid shows… and have for a really long time! The springs themselves are GORGEOUS (and SO COLD). The whole place kind of reminds me of a vacation retreat from like the 50s… but we had a really fun day there! The mermaids were awesome!

My old flow dance teacher is now a professional mermaider - she enters competitions and does photoshoots and everything! It’s such a cool activity :star_struck:

I’ve always wanted to give mermaiding a try, but last time I looked at silicone tails they were… uh, not quite in the budget

In case anyone wins the lottery (or just has money to burn) and wants a custom silicone mermaid tail, I’ve been following this company in Florida for years - they make gorgeous ones!

Fin folk used to make silicone mermaid tails, but now it looks like they’re either booked solid or are sticking to fabric. And the fabric ones aren’t that expensive comparatively… :eyes:

Hmmm… Yule is coming… :joy:

I think I could get by with the fabric tail. Lol. There’s about a $2,000 price difference and they have some very pretty ones!

I was lucky, because the instructor gave us the nessesary equipement, but yes, the prices are very high for the silicone ones.

This is also a good site to buy from. I think I will start with learning how to work with a monofin and then buy a fabric tail

My only connection to mermaiding and it’s really a loose connection is there are mermaids at a local tavern in the city I grew up in.

Ah! One of those places! Mom used to say that when a place is themed like this, don’t forget to go to the restroom, or you may miss something cool. We actively sought out places like this on our travels. Always fun!

I feel that its a bit insulting to followers of sea witchcraft and those that follow mermaid magic and the element of water

I’m sure that wasn’t the intention, sorry you feel that way. Mermaids are beautiful and their histories are fascinating. Living in a seaport city, sea witchcraft is important as are the mysteries of the creatures that live there. Bless :green_heart:

As someone who’s always had an affinity with water (Scorpio girl here) thanks to my father, and as someone who practices mermaid magick and water magick every now and then, I do not find this insulting at all. I personally think it’s a fun and respectful activity that connects one to the water element. Blessed Be :heartpulse:

I don’t think it’s insulting at all and I love the sea and mermaids. I think they would be proud and happy we think of them.

@robin3 I’m not knocking how u feel. Just curious why you think it’s an insult

Ohh I’ve always wanted to do this! :mermaid:

Sorry, I’m not following - which part is insulting? I’m sure that wasn’t the intention

Firstly there was no intention of insulting anyones practice, could you share the reasons why you find it as such? Would you say that the people dressed as fairies insult those who work with them and such magic?

Secondly, mermaiding has been around for 70years now and is another form of free diving and techical swimming. Adding to that, they are peaple who promote enviromental sustainability. The local group, other alone or with other groups organise beach and underwater cleaning for safer waters. Also, let’s note that mermaids in gerenal keep the faith of children in magic alive.
We are all equal and magical underwater :mermaid:t2:

Agreed! :handshake: A fabric one looks like a good way to have a beautiful swimming tail on a budget, while still looking amazing :mermaid:

That’s so nice! What a great way to try it out. It looks like you had a blast in the video - do you think you’ll try it again in the future? :mermaid:

I’m sorry if it came across that way, Robin :people_hugging: Everyone is entitled to their own opinions about it.

If I can offer another point of view to consider, I’m pretty much all water in my astrological chart, have a deep multi-generational bond with the ocean, and actively involve the sea in my practice, but I personally see mermaiding as a fun and expressive hobby.

Still, to each their own perspective!

Love and blessings :sparkles:

This is beautifully said - I love this! :blue_heart: :ocean:

I will definately! I think I have a monofin from the olden days when I was in a swimming team, other wise I will get a new one and train on my own in the begining.

I don’t believe it’s meant to be an insult nor does it seem to have insulted other fellow followers of sea and mermaid magick in this thread.

As always, you are free to practice how you see fit. You have a right to have opinions that differ from others. :white_heart:

I am sorry that you are personally offended by this topic.
