The deck used in the images is the Hanson-Roberts Tarot, a modern deck based on the original tarot artwork by Pamela Coleman-Smith.
We all know that tarot is more than just a deck of cards. They function as a method of divination, spirit communication, and personal reflection. However, it is also a mirror that reflects the collective soul’s evolution. At the heart of tarot is the Major Arcana, the 22 cards that chart the symbolic journey known as The Fool’s Journey. This path is more than divination. It is a story of transformation and a spiritual roadmap that can help guide us through life’s trials and triumphs.
If you have never heard of The Fool’s Journey, then you’re in for a treat. Today, we will walk through the story with The Fool along his life, spiritual journey, and personal transformation.
The journey begins with The Fool, numbered 0. More than a number, 0 represents the infinite cycle of The Fool. It is a journey he will repeat multiple times throughout his life, as will we all. The Fool stands at the edge of a cliff. His face is turned to the sky, and he carries his hopes and dreams in a satchel on his back. He represents pure potential, the leap of faith, and the courage to begin without knowing where the road will take him. The Fool is each of us at the start of a new chapter: naive, hopeful, and open to possibility.
As The Fool steps into the world, he encounters powerful archetypes that shape his understanding of reality:
- The Magician teaches him to harness his will and manifest his desires.
- The High Priestess invites him to trust intuition and explore hidden knowledge.
- The Empress nurtures creativity, abundance, and connection to nature.
- The Emperor introduces structure, authority, and the power of boundaries.
- The Hierophant offers tradition, spiritual guidance, and communal wisdom.
These cards represent the external forces that work with and against us all. These are our teachers, our parents, and the institutions that shape our early worldview. On this leg of the journey, The Fool learns how to operate within society, balancing personal power with the collective norms of society.
Now that The Fool has an understanding of the outer world, he turns inward to confront his emotions, his choices, and his inner strength:
- The Lovers challenge him to make meaningful choices and explore relationships.
- The Chariot drives him to assert control and pursue goals with determination.
- Strength reveals the power of compassion, patience, and inner resilience.
- The Hermit encourages reflection and introspection.
- Wheel of Fortune reminds him of life’s unpredictability and cycles.
- Justice demands accountability, truth, and ethical clarity.
This part of The Fool’s journey is about self-discovery. He begins to understand his motivations, confront his shadows, and take responsibility for his path. This is where we also learn more about ourselves. Our path will have us winding between cards, integrating our outer knowledge with our inner world.
At this point, the journey deepens. The Fool comes face-to-face with profound spiritual challenges that shake his foundations:
- The Hanged Man teaches surrender and the value of seeing things differently.
- Death marks transformation and release, letting go of what no longer serves.
- Temperance brings healing, balance, and integration.
- The Devil exposes addiction, illusion, and the chains we choose.
- The Tower shatters false structures, forcing radical change and awakening.
Some may call this the dark night of the soul. The Fool has been metaphorically stripped bare. He is broken open, tested, and forced to see life from a different perspective. Through this, he learns more about himself and his limitations. Through these trials, he begins the process of awakening.
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, The Fool emerges from the ruins of The Tower and steps into the light of rebirth:
- The Star offers hope, inspiration, and spiritual renewal.
- The Moon challenges him to navigate illusion and trust his instincts.
- The Sun celebrates joy, clarity, and vitality.
- Judgement calls him to rise, reflect, and act with integrity.
- The World marks completion, unity, and fulfillment.
The Fool has come full circle. At this point, he is no longer the naive wanderer. He is the awakened soul, ready to begin again with deeper wisdom.
The Fool’s Journey isn’t linear; it is cyclical or spiral. This is a path he will walk many times, learning and relearning over and over again. The Fool is a reflection of our own path in life. As we move through the physical world, we are constantly confronted with new experiences, challenges, and trials in life. Whether it is a lesson in love, loss, creativity, or spiritual growth, each card is a mirror of the steps we may take during our own journey.
So, whether you’re standing at the edge of a cliff of new beginnings or navigating the chaos of a crumbling tower, remember that tarot is a guide for us to follow. The Fool has a message to share: you are the hero of your own story.
