The Lost Art of Ritual

Today’s world…have you notice how fast it moves?

We rush from one obligation to the next…

We wake up to alarms, answer emails before breakfast, eat meals while multitasking to meet deadlines, and often collapse into bed wondering where the heck the day went…

Somewhere along the way, humans, lost something our ancestors understood deeply…

The importance of ritual.

NOT religion. NOT dogma. NOT rules.

RITUAL.

The intentional act of pausing long enough to acknowledge that something matters.

And long before modern religions existed, human beings gathered around fires.

They marked births and deaths - often with song.

They celebrated harvests.

Mourned losses.

Honored the seasonal changes.

Across cultures throughout history, people instinctively created ceremonies to help them navigate life’s transitions…why did they do this?

Because humans are wired to make sense of the world. Their hearts instinctively search for meaning in the moments that shape us. Ritual gives shape to experiences that are too big for words alone.

In today’s world? Ha… many of us move through major life experiences without ever pausing to truly honor them. Half the time we aren’t even present, because we are too busy living the experience behind the lense of our phones.

Ritual creates a sacred pause.

Its an intentional action. It’s saying, this moment deserves my attention. It gives us permission to heal, to feel, to reflect, to celebrate, to grieve…

Ritual doesnt have to be elaborate. You can simply light a candle for the one you miss.

Offer gratitude before a meal.

The power isnt found in the complexity of the ritual. The power is found in presence.

I struggle with this as well. For years I was a working mother of 3 crazy kids! Between their schedules, work, gym, time for friends, time for husband…It was nuts. But, as the kids have gotten older and I began to slow down, I have realized the same thing millions of other moms have…none of that shit mattered! Not one bit. I was told by my mom to really focus on being WITH my kids. Not just in the room, but engaging with them. Leave the phone on the counter and play! I did pretty good. But I wish I had done better.
I am getting much more mindful and thoroughly enjoy the small rituals I insert into my day now. It is important to honor certain things. Even if it is to just pause to enjoy the beauty and smell of a meal you’ve created or to “stop and smell the roses” haha. Sorry to be cliche, but the old adage has withstood the test of time!

I agree! Lets bring back the rituals, slow it down, and be mindful. I am working on it everday!
@SilverBear I love the last line of this post! That is a great quote!

Wonderful Wednesday SilverBear,

Yes…I have looked at what you are saying as to “time-saving”. We have created all these devices to free up our time but then, instead of enjoying everything, just being, we are “conditioned” to think if we have more “free” time, we must do something/anything don’t just “idle” (in other words, just enjoy). There is a commercial on TV for Haribo Gold Bears and the little girl says, “because when you have more you want more”…why, when we have “more” time do we think we have to do “more” things? I just don’t get it!!:face_with_spiral_eyes:

When we take “time out” to reflect (ritual or anything), we are considered NOT productive. But isn’t a healthy mental and spiritual life in itself productive? Modern society puts an emphasis on tangible wealth, not the wealth of spirit and health.

Since I started on my witchcraft path, and since we don’t have kids, and I am now retired, I have the luxury of being able to set aside time for rituals.

Nothing very elaborate, but just taking a breath while letting the sun touch my skin, lighting a candle with intention, even just sitting outside and listening to the birds, watching a butterfly as it finds sustenance in the flowers I have planted, celebrating the sabbats and the turning of the wheel gives more meaning to my life and I am thankful for it all.
