Ok I don’t mean to offend and to start off I’m not saying hauntings don’t happen or that there aren’t bad spirits out there, of course they happen and of course there is negative of everything in life. The root of this teaching is fear, and that’s what I’ll chat about here.
First: We do not need to, nor should we fear.
Second: Possession is not like the church or movies show - I do possession, it’s called horsing, it’s a standard shamanic practice and shamans have been doing it for 1000s of years and I’ve yet to see one turn their head 360° or crawl across a ceiling (trust me I’d be the first one out the door if that happened.) Why am I mentioning possession, cuz you said Amityville (and that’s a whole load of possession
).
This is important because you don’t need to live with this fear and once I show you what I’ve been taught, hopefully (and I’ll add a shamanic exercise at the end) with practice and patience, that fear will disappear.
A little on that, I’m a Warren fan but alot of sceptics say it was a hoax, so I read the Warrens books to see the Warrens view sans Hollywood (they’re brilliant by the way) but the interesting difference between the Warrens books (written by themselves) and the movies - is the books contain no fear - they read like a police report and that really stood out to me. So if you like them as a couple, I recommend reading their books.
The house is gorgeous, I love that old stuff, but if you want old and spooky we have a s*tload here in England, I went to a pub in Norfolk just under 900 years old, in Italy and Greece, buildings are even older and what about the pyramids. Why am I mentioning these? Because the older the building the larger the egregore (build up of human energy) as there are more stories, experiences good and bad attached to that place. That’s why the buildings feel different. If your clairs are well tuned (and it looks like yours are) then you will pick up on that. That’s why some people feel the “haunting” and some don’t. If everyone honed their clairs everyone would feel it.
- So what did I learn about the mechanics of a haunting, because knowing this removes the fear. Here’s a few theories that I was taught, and they help dispell fear.
The first thing that stands out in typical hauntings or spirit activity is how classical “poltergeist” or atmospheric physical phenomena appears — cabinet doors opening, footsteps, banging noises, physical marks etc. These almost never happen when a witch does deep, intentional, devotional work with spirit, or ancestors. Why? Trained psychics read people everyday, we use pendulums, tarot cards, runes and we’re all ok; so what’s the difference. Well it’s perception and fear. When we are doing the working, we set our space, set our intention and feel in control. But when we enter an unknown space we feel vulnerable but we shouldn’t. That same power and control you have when you set the intention, is still in you and you can tap into that anytime and anywhere - you never lose that!
Unconscious / Environmental Kinetic Energy
Alot of what happens in hauntings like doors opening, furniture impressions, pets acting odd, banging on walls etc - often boils down to subtle environmental shifts, draft dynamics in old timber, or psychokinesis/poltergeist activity. In traditional folklore and parapsychology, poltergeist phenomena aren’t even “spirits” most of the time—they are often raw, unconscious emotional tension (especially in houses with alot of stress) externalizing physically into the room.
Residual Impressions & Unbound Local Dead
Walking through a cemetery or an abandoned building, and seeing or feeling physical traces is usually residual energy—like a localized film loop burned into the atmosphere of a place—or they are encounters with unbound, wandering land-spirits (landvaettr) or human dead who are just drifting in the middle world. It’s there, it’s been there long before you, and will still be there long after you’ve gone. You don’t need to fear it, it’s just sharing the same space you are, that’s all!
- I mentioned possession - In historical Trolldom, animism, Shamanism and Goetic practices, - channeling a spirit/deity in full-body possession work or “horsing,” is a structured ritual form of communication. It is a practiced, voluntary spirit alliance. You are opening a clear, controlled channel to invite primordial, or divine currents into your physical body aka vessel, and it really isn’t that sensational.

Cuz here I am, chatting to you, not dead, not damaged, not terrified (slightly crazy but I can’t blame the gods for that
) Why, because I learnt simple energy management techniques, grounding, discipline, and intentionality. I also learnt that angels/demons/spirits talk via possession not turn you into The Exorcist. It’s about communication and relationship not dominance and terror. That’s church propaganda, fear-mongering, sensationalism that sells pews, edge-lord cleanses, movie tickets and keeps you in the dark. I have been possessed, voluntarily by Loki, Lucifer aka Samael, Asmoday, Odin, my spirit guide an 11th century nun, and a Thusar - some were more intense, yes the body swayed, yes it felt weird but everytime I do a soul rune reading here in this coven, I am horsing the god, that’s how they come out the way they do.
So the Shamanic Exercise.
Clear Intent vs. Unconscious Spookiness
When people experience random “hauntings,” or unsettling bumps in the night, they are usually dealing with low-level residual noise, ungrounded anxiety, or unbound human dead floating in the middle world. They haven’t set a door, they haven’t called a specific spirit, and they have zero boundaries. They are essentially leaving the front door wide open and wondering why a stray draft or a wandering traveler walked in.
So here’s the first exercise.
Practice spiritual hygiene.
This is basic 101 witchcraft. It won’t keep everything out, but it will empower you and show the spirit world you’re not an amateur. So what is spiritual hygiene? Fancy wards, thousands of crystals and bells - if that’s your thing, sure. How about this though. A clean, tidy swept out home. A prayerful home. A little bit of belief in yourself. Seriously - you don’t need huge academia or loads of money. Spirits respond to the energy you bring to the table: So here’s the exercise.
You’ll need
You.
A candle.
A mirror
To do.
Light the candle.
Pick up the mirror, sit comfortably.
Take a long look at yourself in the mirror and tell that person one amazing thing you know about them, anything, something they did, something they overcame, how they helped another, a clever fact, an interesting fact - pick one and say it, over and over, out loud to that person in the mirror until you start to feel it in your body.
Then put the mirror down and touch that part of your body where you felt it, and sit with that emotion.
That’s it. Put the mirror away, blow out the candle, and do this daily for 7 days. Then write a small paragraph at the end of the 7 days on how you see yourself.
You can continue this exercise for as long as needed. There’s no rush. The point? You are a strong, confident human being, no spirit can conquer you, you just haven’t realised that yet and that’s why you fear the unseen. This shamanic practice is to help you build conviction in yourself.
Remember, panic and fear invite instability, tricksters of a low order, and unsettling physical disruptions because fear acts as an ungrounded battery.
Respect, Humor, and Sovereignty invites direct alliance, clear communication, and absolute protection. You can show that in how you work with the spirit world but more importantly how you work with yourself.
I hope this is helpful, apologies for the long reply.
With love & maybe too much mischief
