I was just wondering this sounds like a strange question, but when you celebrate say for instant Imbolc August the 1st do you celebrate Imbolc until Ostara (spring equinox) on September 21st all through that month? how people go about this? (is it a monthly celebration) xx I am in the Southern Hemisphere.
I don’t know about others, but I usually celebrate the holiday for a week or two before and then a week or so after. Then I rev up for the next holiday!
Of course, since I’m in the Northern Hemisphere, there are a few differences. I’m lucky enough to have Halloween and Samhain together. So I’ll probably decorate for Halloween in September! It’ll come down after, like, November 3rd. And then Thanksgiving will go up, which you don’t have. So it’s like, I’m backwards to you. That makes things confusing.
Hi Sharon!
I usually think of the day of the sabbat as a holiday and try to honor it with some kind of activity, spell, or decorations specific to that sabbat. After the holiday passes, I keep some seasonal decor around and like to continue working with the energies of the season. It’s not specific to the sabbat per say, but because the sabbats are markers of the seasons, there is a lot of overlap (if that makes sense!).
As for how long to continue the celebrations, it depends on the person, their practice, and their schedule. Some sabbats are traditionally celebrated over a longer period of time (like the 12 Days/Nights of Yule) and some tie into other events - such as full moons, eclipses, the new year, other holidays like Halloween, etc. Celebrations can be a day, a week, a month, or up until the next sabbat. It’s up to each person to decide what feels right to them ![]()
Blessed be and happy celebrations! ![]()
@BryWisteria ,thank you for that great information I understand now just wasn’t to sure xx ![]()
@Amethyst , I am beginning to understand about the Wheel of the Year, there is so many different celebrations its amazing x ![]()
You’re welcome, Sharon! I’m happy if it was helpful for you ![]()
However and whenever you choose to start celebrating, I’m wishing you a blessed Ostara! ![]()
Hi @moonstruck you´ve gotten a few awsome replies already. I just want to throw in my adhd-chaos-artwitch point of view here ![]()
I´m not nearly as organised as other witches, full moons, dark moons, sabbats are very rarely celebrated on their actual dates. This was something that used to stress me out A LOT when I was younger and tried to be perfect (and didn´t know yet that I´ve got an adhd brain).
I changed my practice to celebrating the sabbats as seasons, this reduces the stress for me a lot, since I´m also a working single mom.
It gives me opportunity to slowly decorate my altar, and maybe doing one or two rituals over the course of the month.
I think there are many ways to approaching the sabbats - and some witches don´t celebrate or observe them at all.
I´m friends with a lovely southern hemispere art witch - she is super creative with her practice and celebrates SPRINGOWEEN instead of Halloween for example. If you want to check her out you can find her on Instagram her Insta handle is Correganthecrone
Southern hemispere witches are often struggling with the Wiccan Wheel of the Year because it´s very eurocentric, but there are ways to work around that. ![]()
Oh yeah! And if you want, you can celebrate, say, Spring when it comes to your area alone. When a certain bush blooms, or a flower shows up. For instance, here in the States, Fall comes to Maine and Vermont earlier than here in West Virginia. So you can pick a time when it’s right for you!
@katharina , thankyou for your lovely response I like the idea of celebrating the sabbats as seasons I suppose that’s what I am used to I completely understand the ADHD aspect of your conversation as I am always wanting to do things so many things at once become overwhelmed and don’t complete any tasks I do have creative side of me I want this to be a fantastic journey for me and I will take my time to what suits me I love being on this forum and so happy that I have joined Spells8 everyone has been so kind and welcoming and the way the site is set up is fantastic xx ![]()
@Amethyst

Yes, absolutely right! This is how people used to celebrate before there was a calendar.
I so feel you on this!! I´m making endless lists of things I want to do or creative projects that I then stick into my Grimoire. Because if I don´t I wont remember any of them once I have a few days off and finally time for it. ![]()
Oh, it will be!! Even if you´ll never cast a single spell in your life, just keeping a journal (or Grimoire or Book of Shadows), do some meditation, working with affirmations, creating an altar…all these things can improve your overall well-being and mental health greatly.
But casting spells of course is fun and can support you in many ways.
You’re welcome! I love the fact that we all try to help each other and lift each other, rather than drag people down.
Yeppers! They celebrated Beltane with the hawthorn blooming, and things like that. Calendar days had no meaning for the most part. Some people were smart enough to do the astrological stuff, but most people didn’t. When the last sheaf of grain was put up, it was time to celebrate Lughnasadh. So make it fit your needs down there!
Good luck!
Hi Sharon
Everyone has given some wonderful advice. I can only add that I just set up an Altar for each Sabbat and do them outside weather permitting and so it is only for a few hours. I do the same indoors as well. I treat it as a day.
I also agree that even though there are 8 Sabbats for The Wheel of the Year the most important ones for me is as you have said and @katharina are the 4 seasons I do Beltane, Samhain (when the Veil between the Spirt and our world is the thinnest as this is part of my practice) and Litha and Yule (Summer and Winter Solstice) as rituals are held at Stone Henge here in England and I feel are significant changes in the Year. I do try to do the others but I feel that if I can’t then I don’t put pressure on myself.
As I work as well I don’t have time to do the Daily Ritual on Spells8 and post any daily Tarot, Leormand, Oracle Cards Spreads.
I find it easier for me to do some rituals on the 1st of the month or when I feel I need to.
Every Witch has their own path and so it is what you feel that is right for you. You can do as little or as much as you want.
Blessings to you ![]()

@Moonbeam , again thankyou for your insight to the knowledge that you have I believe that Samhain will be very special this year as my little sister passed away in her sleep on the 31st of October I have her ashes with me and have always celebrated with her but I believe she would love to be apart of this community that I joined and my father passed away Christmas eve many years ago, I will be celebrating as you said , when the Veil between the spirit and hour world is the thinnest and wish to make this apart of my practice as well to commemorate my Ancestors before me, I would love to visit the Stone Henge in England.
