Unpopular Opinion

Am I the only one who thinks this??

The Full Moon is peak power, not the clean-up phase. It’s the height of illumination, clarity, and celebration — the spotlight moment when your intentions are fully visible. Full Moons are for seeing what’s alive. Waning Moons are for letting go of what’s done.

I completely agree with you, beautiful!

Hmm… I mean, I get where you’re coming from, but I can see the case for using the power of the Full Moon for other things. It’s also going to depend entirely on who you ask and the tradition they come from.

I got some of my books out because I was curious to see what newer authors had to say versus classic authors, and I’ve gathered some quotes here. I arranged the quotes from oldest to newest, and it’s really interesting to see how some authors don’t even acknowledge the Full Moon as a phase – there are at least two instances of the moon phases being simply Waxing and Waning!

Whenever ye have need of anything,
Once in the month, and when the moon is full,
Ye shall assemble in some desert place,
Or in a forest all together join
To adore the potent spirit of your queen,
My mother, great Diana.

The full moon is the high tide of psychic power, and recognized as such in other religions besides the pagan faith of the witches.

We may then summarize these important lunar tides as follows:

Waxing moon : the time of construction, invoking.
Full moon : the time of integration, perfecting.
Waning moon : the time of destruction, banishing

Taking the two main phases: the time from the New Moon, through the First Quarter, to the Full Moon is known as the Waxing Moon. From the Full, through the Last Quarter, to the New is known as the Waning Moon.

The lunar rituals in Witchcraft are designed to align the Witch with the energy of the moon in very much the same way as the seasonal rites. The waxing phases of the moon (running from new moon to full moon) are periods of gain when the energy is conducive to growth and creativity. The waning periods (running from just after the full moon until the time of the new moon) are periods of decline when the energy of the moon is conducive to decay and dissipation.

The Full Moon is ruled by the Mother Goddess, and contrary to popular belief, Her energy isn’t necessarily just a one-day affair. In fact, many practitioners consider it to be full (and use its energy as such) for one day before the calendar date and one day after. This is really good news magically for a couple of reasons. For one thing, the Full Moon can be used for any effort at all, but more importantly, the Moon’s energy peaks during this time. This means that any effort performed during the Full Moon is not only charged to the max, but packs a cosmic wallop when released into the Universe. Because of this, most practitioners save this phase for handling difficult or complicated matters, or for efforts that require an extra boost.

During a lunar month, we have the new moon, then the crescent moon waxes until it becomes the full moon. The the crescent moon wanes until the moon is dark (new) again. You could get really specific about the astronomical terms for the different crescents if you want to geek out, but for Witches, we’re looking mainly at four different periods of energy. Waxing energy is about growth and expansion, so this is a good time to consider spells and rituals that coordinate with that sense of increase and building up. The full moon represents maximum potential and is considered to be a very powerful time for magical workings of all kinds. The waning crescent brings a sense of release, of decreasing energy, so it’s a good time for workings that align with removal, letting go, banishing, and cleansing. The new moon is good for internal workings, conceiving new projects, and exploring the mysteries of the dark.

Full Moon: This is the releasing phase of the moon. The Full Moon is when you complete preparation and release your spell or intent.

This is the big one! The full moon is considered a potent phase for seeing the full truth of something, or for accessing your complete power. It’s also associated with gratitude for what has been manifested and is therefore an obvious time to give yourself credit for your efforts and recognize how far you’ve come. There can be an air of heightened awareness and bigger witchy vibes during this phase.

As a folk witch myself, I only halfway pay attention to the moon phases anyway  if I need to do a spell or work some magick right away, I won’t wait for the right moon phase. I’ll simply cast the spell.

Love watching Kelly-Ann Maddox on YouTube. I didn’t realize she had a book. I’ll have to look for it.
