What do you read - always related to your path?

Gah! I started this three times. I keep devolving into a book report when I mention a book. Darned rabbit holes. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I keep finding links to my path in my reading but to be fair I’m reading a LOT of paranormal stuff. I also read bios, technical books, classical literature, romance, mysteries, thrillers, etc.

Strange Angel is a bio I read (in 2019) for specific content about rockets but it has HEAVY relationship to Chaos. (reminder to myself… STOP HERE DO NOT GO DOWN THAT HOLE)

I find links to my belief in almost everything (except the tech manuals) How about you?

BTW: Here is the book I mentioned. You can read the summary on Amazon )

Right now I’m reading PIHKAL - A Chemical Love Story by Alex “Sasha” and Ann Shulgin. It’s a very weird book that has two halves – the first one a “fictional” love story / autobiography based on the lives of the authors, and the second half is a detailed guide on how to make almost 200 different psychoactive compounds. Provided that you’re a chemist living in a country where it’s legal, which unfortunately I’m neither :joy: But it’s a fascinating book nevertheless, and connects with my shamanic path and interest in our body and mind, the nature of consciousness, love and connection, experiences of divinity, and how it all comes together. :sparkling_heart:

If not my beliefs, my life in some way. I just finished John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. They were planning on buying a tract of land like my driver and myself. I’m not holding my breath.

I also got through Faust. That one made me question my beliefs, but I realized I had made no deal, nor had I requested power over anyone or anything.

Still, I am being tested to see what my reaction might be to a modest situation of greed and power. My intentions have been clear from the start, but whether or not anyone believes me is in question. If I get upset over it, I choose to remember the investment would not have lasted if focused on anything else. I’m taking a chance on this, but it is my chance to take. If the investment falls through directly, there is still some hope that it may have spiritual repercussions from other sources.

I think the mountain of literature I read caused me to question many beliefs. It was a path to where I am now.

When I was young and immortal and fresh out of a chemistry class, I made myself sick a few times and decided I might not be immortal so I quit trying.

I wonder if it is just natural for us to pick up on these threads in books. Some of Leon Uris’ books even had me thinking about deities.

It definitely happens! I found myself very inspired by a fiction series by author M.A. Phillips called “Rituals at Rock Bay”. The series itself is about a modern Druid, and the author has said it falls under the category of magical realism.

I wrote about how it inspired me and my practice on my blog, but it basically boils down to loving the way my practice was shown in a book because it’s not something I had seen before. While I don’t practice exactly the same way the main character does, the similarities were enough to tug at my spirit.

They’re pretty good books!

I’m listening to your interview with Phillips in the background.

There is another series that, while not related to Druids, is an interesting mystery series about Southwestern US Navajos. In print it is called “The Blessing Way: A Leaphorn & Chee Novel”, on Netflix, it is called ‘Dark Winds’. I watched some of the “Dark Winds” series and was more engaged with the hints of Navajo spirits.

The Audible first in series is free if you have an Audible membership. It gets picky reviews (though it is a 4.3) but I think I’m going to give it a listen.

The Longmire series in kindle and audible also has a little spiritualism in each book and a lot in some. “Daughter of the Morning Star” (Audible for me) had a lot and was awesome. I’ve read or listened to all of them. I’ve also seen all the TV series but the books are an order of magnitude better.

Re: Rituals on Rock Bay

I’ve added it to my list. Interesting interview that you did. I ended up liking M.A. Phillips enough to explore her writing.

I know I’m late to the party, but better late than never!

I was wondering if this also happens with you all when you’re watching something? When I thought of the magickal study budddies, I wasn’t sure whether to say anything…I got up to boil the kettle, and someone on the tv said “Hi, I’m Francisco”. I froze for a few seconds, then walked back and pressed rewind and sure enough, he said it again. Of course, I messaged Francisco!

Way back in January when I posted my Deity spread, I was sitting there contemplating if I was right or not. Then the YTvideo I was watching cut to an ad, and in capital letters across the screen was “DISCOVER GAIA”. I just sat there staring at it instead of skipping as usual, because I couldn’t believe what I was looking at! Of course, I clicked it - I wasn’t about to pay their fees lol, but you know, I can take a hint. Usually. :see_no_evil: I went back to spells8 and sure enough, it said The World card is often associated with Gaia.

Then there was time when I was watching Netflix, a docuseries called I Am A Stalker… she’s talking about the woman she was stalking, the next thing I know she’s talking about sigils and spell jars. I think I was researching various Craft methods at the time, so I added them to the list!

Oh, I’m glad to hear it! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: I just realized that I had forgot to mention that the author herself is a Druid in the ADF  and I think that’s another thing that makes the magical realism in the book so fantastic. The author actually knows what she’s talking about!

I hope you enjoy the series! It’s definitely not a YA book and there are some intimate scenes, but it’s not a series I would consider romance or “smut” at all, just as an FYI lol

This sounds really interesting! I’m going to add it to my TBR and hopefully make it through some of those books during the Summer when I’m not in school  the list is getting so long!

Oh, absolutely! There are moments when I’m watching something and feel that tug of spirit, either as a message or as inspiration lol this often happened to me when I watched the Netflix series Vikings. I’m not a Norse Pagan by any means, but the conviction and faith the characters show in their Gods pulls at me in a way that’s hard to explain. I’ve always wanted to have that kind of practice and religious experience, but growing up in a non-religious household, I’ve found it difficult lol

It mostly happens to me when I’m watching something I expect to have spiritual overtones.

I was watching ‘The Craft’ for the fifth or sixth time and suddenly thinking that a portion of it wasn’t Hollywood brain buzz but maybe it had significance. I have always liked Fairuza Balk’s performance. I went to her fan site and she continued her path after the movie. So down that rabbit hole I went.

I also watch the occasional religious movie or even the ads. I believe in belief and want to understand more so I watch for links to spiritualism of any sort. Vikings, Exodus, The Robe, The Marvel universe and many others
