What does it mean to be grateful, and why include it in our practice

An excerpt from a friend, “It’s about recognizing and acknowledging the blessings and positive aspects of your life, and expressing appreciation for them.”

I spent some time thinking about this recently. This word pops up alot in my life from spells here, and elsewhere, to lists in journals, to pages in scrapbooks… It’s so ubiquitous a concept, so powerfully recommended so constantly that you stop seeing these prompts to be grateful. It’s happened to me before as well.

That’s sad.

Being grateful is powerful because it helps even see those positive things that do exist in our lives, one of the best antidotes to depression and unhappiness that I know of, but it’s also a call to care.

When we get tired of the prompts, or worse stop seeing them altogether, we’ve lost a bit of our capacity to care about the world around us.

By stopping to design spellwork around it, we’re reminding ourselves not only that there are indeed nice things in our lives, but that we do indeed care.

I try to give thanks every day, but sometimes it’s difficult finding something new. Thanks for this reminder!

I have that same problem! So I’ve expanded the list to include: attributes about myself that are positive from my point of view, physical objects that I love interacting with (my coffee pot hits the list on a regular basis!), things from the outside world (the internet), other people, animals that make me happy…

I still repeat alot but it’s more intentional now.

A great practice and a welcome reminder! A day become a better one when we stop to take time for gratitude.

Thank you for sharing, @penny4!
