What is Mabon?
Mabon is the Autumn Equinox, usually celebrated around September 21–23 in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s a time when day and night are perfectly balanced, symbolizing harmony and the turning of the seasons. After Mabon, the days grow shorter as we descend into the darker half of the year.
Spiritually, Mabon is about:
Balance – honoring both light and dark within and around us.
Harvest & Gratitude – giving thanks for what we’ve received this year.
Release – letting go of what no longer serves us, making space for renewal.
It’s often called the “Witches’ Thanksgiving” because it celebrates abundance and gratitude.
Simple Mabon Spell of Gratitude & Balance
This spell helps you ground in gratitude while aligning with the energy of balance.
You’ll need:
1 candle (gold, orange, or brown if possible)
A small bowl of water
An apple (or another seasonal fruit)
A piece of paper & pen
Steps:
Set Your Space – Find a quiet place. Light your candle and place the bowl of water beside it, representing balance between fire (light) and water (dark).
Center Yourself – Take three deep breaths. Feel the balance of inhale/exhale, light/dark, give/receive.
Gratitude – On your paper, write down 3 things you are grateful for this year’s “harvest” (achievements, lessons, blessings).
Release – On the same paper, write 1 thing you are ready to release as the year wanes (a habit, worry, or burden).
The Spell Words (say aloud): “By equal light and equal night, I honor the harvest, blessings bright. With gratitude, I now release, May balance bring me strength and peace.”
Action – Tear the paper in half. Keep the gratitude portion on your altar or in a safe place. Submerge the release portion into the bowl of water, imagining it dissolving from your life.
Close – Eat the apple slowly as an offering to yourself and the season. Extinguish the candle, knowing the spell is complete.
