Recently there was a comment on Gray Witch. I started reading a book on Stoicism. Got me thinking….so much about the Stoics was just a part of my being as a child. Is there such a thing as a Stoic Witch? There is such a thing as a Christian Witch. So, maybe because of my inner conviction since childhood; I might be a Stoic Witch.
Happy Valentines my lovelies, I’m only on page 60, but Stoicism arose from Plato and Aristotle. The basic of happiness for Stoics’ is wisdom. Wisdom, understanding, and control of self. Isn’t that what the craft is??? Wisdom of ourselves, the things around us….understanding our place in the world, and realizing that not all people are on the same path, and self-control (self-control is always a good thing). Looking at it like this, many of us can be Stoic witches…..these labels get too burdensome. So, looking at labels, I am a Stoic, Elemental, Solar, Solitary, Eclectic and Grey Witch. Really??!!
Have a great day with your loved ones all, (I think I’m gonna hit bingo this morning….definitely my turn to win something….even $20 ) Lady Gene
One of the people I watch on YouTube is into Stoicism. It’s an interesting belief system, and I can see it working well with witchcraft! I’m much more chaos, but hey, if it works, it works!
Sounds like me, too. I like the moniker. Didn’t find out about it all until I was in college, but I aced the class, so I may just join you in the appellation.
The more I read this book, the more I say, “yeah, that was me”. WAS…because life got in the way and I slipped from the craft for the last 50 years. Now waking up from my coma, I no longer have children to worry about, no job (SSDI), everything is paid for….it’s time for me to go back to “ME”…..These whole last 2 years, since my daughter’s death, which is actually brought me back….have been wonderful. Waking up and reclaiming my life, the way I want to live it. Not how someone tells me I should. Lady Gene
Sorry you didn’t win. Maybe next time. It’s always more fun winning. Were there a lot of people there?
Enjoy yourself a few minutes? Did you have a good conversation with someone new? These may be boobie prizes, but they can be valuable in the long run, especially if they get you away from the everyday or some form of stress.
Always have fun at bingo. My friends were not there yesterday. (Thurs are free bingo for the 55+ crowd) However, a friend called and wants to play today at 11. So, I’m going. Great to get out. Since I’m bus bound (coma/TBI/seizures) this is close (less than a mile, if I have to walk however, takes me just a little under an hour). So, this is my “gym”, “bar”, my general social club. I do not do social media, here with y’all is as “techy” as I get. (Been hiding from someone for decades, can’t use social media, because I do not want to be found. My family, whom I remain in contact with, respects my decision and does not let the person know where I am.)
Always good conversation. My friend whom I am meeting is Tom. He so helped me through my daughter’s death in 2024 and listened to me as I worked through that grief, returning to my Craft, and all the crap here at home. I honestly don’t think I would have made it without his help. AND….totally platonic, people!
It’s sad you had to put that in. People can be close friends and platonic. I do it all the time, but I am often judged without cause. When I allow anything like what they want to see, they create a monster, so I do not allow the judgemental to define anything. I don’t trust them anymore.
Philosophy is one of my passion areas of study and I was learning about Stoicism a few weeks ago - what a happy synchronicity! May I ask which book you’re reading (and if you recommend it)?
I’d like to add the Philosopher King Marcus Aurelius to the list of Stoics, too! His book Meditations is one of the core resources for Stoicism. It’s interesting because it’s a book no one was ever meant to read - so it’s a very heartfelt and honest exploration of Stoicism and how to apply the philosophy to one’s own life. I’ve only listened to segments of it (via YouTube) but I’d recommend it for anyone interested.
There sure are a lot of areas of study! I know the feeling when piling up all the labels starts to feel like too much It’s why I generally just stick with “Eclectic”. It covers a little bit of everything!
Thank-you Georgia, people always assume that men and women cannot be “just friends” however; most of my friends have been males, because females usually feel threatened by me. (I am my own woman and always have been, raised by a serious feminist here in Vegas. She was one of the first female dealers on the Strip at the Riviera, [the movie Casino was filmed mostly in there])
Isn’t it Bry? Yes, the book is focusing on Marcus Aurelius at the moment. This is like a “Dummies” book. Stoicism 101 by Erick Cloward, the back of the book says SimonandSchuster.com but also says Adams media. I usually don’t buy books, but only $5!!! Trump has removed so much from our libraries, I figured I had to buy it.
Yes, I try to stick to eclectic also. Saturday walking down my street, coming home from the bus…2 JW’s (Jehovah’s Witness) approached me as said, “can we speak to you about Jesus Christ?” I just shook my head and waggled my finger no. One said, “may I ask you why?” Quite calmly, clearly and directly I said, “because I am a witch, thank-you” You shoulda seen the look on their faces!! I bet they had an eye-opening “testimony” back at the Kingdom Hall. I’m sure they had to ask, how they are supposed to deal in that situation.
Well, they let me be….I got a giggle out of it. Lady Gene
Have they visited Epictetus, yet? I enjoyed reading The Golden Sayings of Epictetus as much as Marcus Aurelius.
Funny.
I only had one experience of JW visitors, where I was working as a home health caretaker years ago. They complained I knew the Bible better than they did! Yet I never knew chapter and verse. I never let on that I was a Witch or even non- Christian.
When I moved to New Mexico, the locals swore Catholics weren’t Christian. They would have had fits if they knew how far off the grid I had gone! Yet the few Native Americans who found out I was a witch treated me with honor for the Burning Times.
I visited our newest library to make printouts of a couple pictures. The place was more than half DVDs!
I was in New Mexico for quite a while (even worked the Maximum Security Prison in Los Lunas). Yes, the Mexican Catholics are very adamant about what they are!!
As for the libraries, I’m not referring to changing to digital….I mean the shelves were bare!! Many non-fiction books have been removed! The section of the non-fiction books, went from about 8-10 shelves of books, down to 3. Many of the occult books that I would check out just are not there anymore. Part of the reason why I bought some books last week….kind of afraid they will disappear.
Yes, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelias…..lots from Marcus.
I used to donate my occult books to Ft Wayne’s library system because they had none at all. I didn’t know libraries carried occult books before then! Within 3 years of donation, they were so often used that the books were torn to bits. During that period, I found a book on Samhain with half the pages torn out. Still haven’t found a complete version of that book anywhere.
