Where should I keep my spell jar? 🍶

The following is from Alyssa Vera on IG (but it came in an email newsletter, so I can’t just directly link to it).

So, first of all. When it comes to witch bottles, the number one rule is that they cannot be opened. Their magic would be gone otherwise!

Then, as usual, keep in mind that we’re talking about YOUR jar. So, as long as you keep it safe, you should follow your intuition. And if you feel the need to place it in a particular place, then it’s okay to do it.

However, the purpose of your bottle is also essential when it comes to picking the best spot, which possibly should be a dark one. A few examples? You can place your love jar under your own bed. Or you can hide your healing bottle in a sick person’s room.

If you’ve prepared a defensive jar, you can bury it in your yard or at a crossroads. Why? A buried bottle is symbolically linked to the protection provided by Mother Earth, and a crossroads has been historically considered a place of mystery and magic.

Likewise, you can throw your bottle into a lake, river, or sea. Just remember that this is technically littering, so please don’t overdo it! Also, keep in mind that you should bury or sink only witch bottles whose spell you don’t want to reverse.

My favorite option? Turning my bottle (it must be a little one) into a talisman by hiding it in my bag and carrying its magic with me wherever I go.

As for me… I usually put them in “relevant” areas, but that can be kind of subjective. I have a couple of dream and protection ones next to our bed, for example. Then I have some creative and prosperity ones on my desk where I work my day job, play, and work on my personal projects. My Hekate one is in the Hekate area of my altar. I have another psychic/divination-focused one next to my tarot deck. Hmm… What else…

Oh, I also have a drawer with a few I’ve made, but I kind of made them with the intention of gifting them to others, and that’s why they don’t have places in our home. I’ve just put that on hold for now, as I’ve found out how expensive shipping overseas is. :smiling_face_with_tear:

This is lovely. Thankyou. I keep my Malphas protection jars, in the directions in the house, I have one from my daughter next to Loki’s altar, and  no more. I need to make some.

Thank you for sharing this! I have a healing jar next to my bed and my luck jar is next to my altar. My mother has an anxiety one I made her next to her computer as that’s where she spends most of her time. I really should do a few more, but I’ve been working on oils lately.

My biggest issue with the witch bottles is the-burry-me ones. I mean, I live in a city, no garden or flowerpots, where on earth should I burry you? In the communal park? Children play, dogs dig, and if that thing opens, hell will be unleashed.
Never thought about throwing it in the sea, but my heart does not feel like littering

I think I currently only have one active spell jar… it stays in my purse and it’s a travel protection bottle. I do have another one sitting here on my desk somewhere but it’s not active anymore. I need to recharge it but I just haven’t had the motivation to do so

The travel jar – there are three pictured because two were for other people and one was for myself

The inactive jar – excuse the poor lighting - it’s still kinda dark in my office

I found some innovative solutions to the spell jar problem and burying them or giving them to the sea.

They’re not cute, but they are biodegradable!

Also, a chaos method that just popped into my head, inspired by gardening .
Plant compostable seed pots.

Make your spell jar ingredients, and spell as normal.
Put them in the seedlings pots, cover with mud and psychically seal the spell. Then bury or place it in the sea.

Yes the ingredients will disperse into nature but the spell is intact through your intention.

Other option is make mojo bags for spellbags instead of spell jars, again psychically seal the spell.

And then I just found these. Oh, such fun, can’t wait to start experimenting :partying_face:

I’m going to put together a few of these and give it a try, and if I haven’t gone up in flames, I’ll post the spell here. Happy chaos and chaos Magick.

Oh, these look like a different trick I learned a long time ago – toilet paper rolls! There’s the little cardboard piece that comes with most toilet paper. Save those and use them for spells you need to bury. Most of them are made with recyclable or compostable material, anyway.

Yes, and that’ll save money too, and is even more eco as we’re recycling.

Great ideas @tracyS ! I may have to look into the last ones to keep in hand in case I come across a spell jar that needs to be buried.

Ooohhh! Another fabulous idea! I’m already buying toilet paper so wouldn’t need to spend extra money! :purple_heart::purple_heart::purple_heart:

Same. I have buried one in a local park, but it felt so strange. I think I’m just going to skip the concept entirely. Not fond of digging around in the dirt, first of all, and have since donated my little trowel away.

@tracyS @MeganB Neat ideas! Those are great alternatives to burying little glass vials. Love it! :black_heart: :silver_heart:
