Witch Challenge for Amethyst:
Hey all! I wasn’t sure just what to do for this challenge, and then I realized. I didn’t know who the Irish God/Goddess of dreams was. So I set out to figure that out and wrote a spell to go with it. I hope y’all like it!
Caer Ibormeith Info and Spell
Caer Ibormeith is the Irish Goddess of Dreams and Prophecy. Caer, pronnounce “Keer” was a shape-shifting goddess who would turn into a swan every other year, along with her 150 handmaidens.
Due to this, she is also known as a goddess of death, as swans are seen as guides to the Otherworld. She was also a goddess of sovereignty, due to the fact that when a suitor came to her father to ask for her hand in marriage, she was more powerful than he. Her father couldn’t force her into marrige and she had to agree to it.
She made her own way in the world and chose her own husband. She appeared to Aengus Óg, son of the Goddess Bóann of Newgrange (Brugh na Bóinne) and The Dagdha, father of the Tuatha de Danann.
Every night for a year, he dreamed of her. Longed for her. To touch her and draw her into his bed. He fell in love with her and wanted her in his bed.
After a while, he became sick and wouldn’t eat. Wouldn’t get out of bed. He wasted away, wanting to do nothing but sleep, until a doctor was called.
The doctor told his family he was love-sick. His parents searched for over two years to find Aengus’ dream woman. Finally, the Dagda visited Bodb, the King of the Sidhe of the area of Munster, to find her.
It took him another year, but finally he found her, and that her father was Ethal Anbuail, of Connaught. When the Dagda and Boann asked that their son be wed to his daughter, he said that she ruled her own life, and he could not give her hand without her permission.
He then explained that she was a shapeshifter, and that year she was a swan. Every Samhain, she would change, from swan to beautiful woman. Ethal told them to have Aengus go to Loch Bél Dracon on the following Samhain, and for him to pick her swan form out among her 150 handmaidens. Only then would she make the decision to marry him.
And so Aengus did. He went to the lake and tried to figure out which swan was hers. They all had silver chains around their neck, all but one. That swan had a silver and gold chain that shone in the light.
He called to Caer, and she came to him, all the other swans moving out of her way. He asked her to marry him, and she agreed, on one condition. If he promised her she could return to the water, and her way of life.
Aengus agreed and used his own powers to turn himself into a swan. They flew around the lake, singing a song so beautiful it was said to put all of Ireland to sleep for three days.
Even today, some say you can hear their song of love on Samhain Eve.
So this makes Caer a good Goddess to call on for dreams, prophecy, sleep, love, and taking charge of your own life. Connect to her when you are trying your dream man, or to help create more loving relationships.
