Challenge Entry: Sleepy Spellwork

I have been creating more tea blends lately for mood, energy and sleep. Here are two of mine that I like.

Ingredients I use:

  • Chamomile - Gentle, reliable base with a pleasant flavor
  • Lemon balm - Calming and mildly sweet, helps with anxiety
  • Oatstraw - * Nourishing to the nervous system and helps with stress, anxiety, and nervous exhaustion
  • Passionflower - Promotes deep relaxation and sleep quality
  • Skullcap - Nervous system support, helps quiet racing thoughts
  • Lavender - Soothing aroma and flavor (a little goes a long way)
  • Mugwort - Traditionally used for vivid dreams, adds depth

Sweet Dreams Tea: designed to ease into restful sleep while encouraging vivid, meaningful dreams.

  • Chamomile - 4 tbsp
  • Lemon balm - 2.5 tbsp
  • Oatstraw - 3 tbsp
  • Passionflower - 2 tbsp
  • Skullcap - 0.5 tbsp
  • Lavender - 0.5 tbsp
  • Mugwort - 0.5 tbsp

Steep 1-2 tsps per cup.

Gentle Sleep Tea: A soothing, balanced herbal blend for peaceful, restorative sleep without the dream-enhancing effects.

  • Chamomile - 4 tbsp
  • Lemon balm - 3 tbsp
  • Oatstraw - 3 tbsp
  • Passionflower - 2 tbsp
  • Skullcap - 0.5 tbsp
  • Lavender - 0.5 tbsp

Steep 1-2 teaspoons per cup of hot water.

:warning:

General Safety Notes:

  • Medications: These herbs can enhance the effects of sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, and sleep aids. Consult your healthcare provider if you’re taking any medications, especially:
    • Sleep medications or sedatives
    • Anti-anxiety medications (benzodiazepines, SSRIs)
    • Blood thinners (passionflower may interact)
    • Sedating antihistamines

  • Allergies: If you’re allergic to plants in the daisy family (ragweed, chrysanthemums), use caution with chamomile.

I am entering my Bedtime Tonic tincture, because it works like a dream to put me to sleep. I used 2 tbsp lavender buds, 2 tsp ashwagandha powder, and 230 ml vodka. I take 60 drops at bedtime, or if I can’t sleep, and it’s lights out for me!

Challenge Entry

I went through a period of having disturbing dreams that left me out of sorts for much of the next day, so I worked with Co-Pilot and came up with this spell. I’ve used it a few times since then and I have to say, it works for me

A Spell for Peace and Calm After Disturbing Dreams

Dispel Uneasiness and Invite Serenity

Introduction

Dreams hold a mysterious power, often weaving intricate tales that linger in the quiet corners of our minds, sometimes leaving us with unease or sadness. After disturbing dreams, it is essential to nurture your spirit and create space for peace and calm. Below is a spell designed to dispel negativity and restore harmony to your inner world.

What You’ll Need

· A white candle (symbolizing purity and peace)

· A small bowl of clean water (signifying renewal)

· A pinch of salt (to clear negativity)

· A soothing herb, such as lavender or chamomile (to invite calmness)

· A quiet space free from distractions

The Ritual

Step 1: Prepare Your Space

Begin by finding a tranquil spot where you feel at ease. Light the white candle and place it in front of you, allowing its soft glow to create a soothing atmosphere. Take a deep breath, inhaling peace, and exhaling tension.

Step 2: Create the Cleansing Waters

Add the pinch of salt to the bowl of water, stirring gently as you say:

Waters pure, take my sorrow, cleanse my heart for a better tomorrow.

Place the bowl before the candle.

Step 3: Set Your Intention

Hold the herb in your hands as you close your eyes. Visualize all uneasiness and sadness flowing out of you, dissipating in the light of the candle. Whisper softly:

“By the light’s glow and herb’s balm, I release this sadness, welcome calm. Peace within, I now reclaim, serenity flows, I feel the same.”

Step 4: Cleanse Yourself

Dip your fingertips into the bowl of water and lightly anoint your forehead and palms. Imagine the water washing away the remnants of your disturbing dream, leaving you refreshed and at peace.

Step 5: Seal the Spell

Allow the candle to burn down naturally if it’s safe to do so or extinguish it with gratitude, saying:

The light has shown the way to peace, unease has gone, calm won’t cease.”

After the Ritual

Take some time to sit quietly, perhaps journaling or meditating on the serenity you’ve invited into your space. Drink a warm cup of herbal tea or surround yourself with comforting aromas to deepen the relaxation.

Conclusion

This gentle spell is not just an act of cleansing but an affirmation of your strength and ability to transform uneasiness into the soothing balm of peace. Allow yourself to carry the tranquility beyond this ritual, knowing your spirit is resilient and ready to embrace calmness at every turn.

Challenge Entry #2

Every few months I refresh the spell bag I keep under my pillow to promote restful and restorative sleep.

These are the ingredients:

  • Dried lavender - to promote relaxation
  • Dried rosemary - for protection
  • Sea salt - for protection
  • Amethyst crystal chips - to promote inner peace
  • Black tourmaline crystal chips - for nightmare relief

At my altar, I get settled and visualize myself sleeping well and waking refreshed. As I add the ingredients to the pouch, I think about the properties of each one, and recite this prayer that I wrote with the help of Co-Pilot:

"As I place these stones and herbs divine,

Infusing dreams with peace and time,

May amethyst calm the mind’s distress,

And black tourmaline shield and bless,

Lavender’s scent, so pure and sweet,

Guide me gently to restful sleep.

Rosemary’s touch, wisdom align,

Sealing dreams with love’s pure sign.

Sea salt’s grains, protect and cleanse,

In this pouch, my spirit mend

By moonlight’s glow and starry night,

Grant me peace till morning light.

With harm to none, this spell is spun,

So mote it be, the magic done."

Once the spell pouch is done, I seal it up and place it under my pillow.

Yet another Challenge Entry

Not sure if this one really counts as “sleepy spellwork”, but the spell bottles are hanging from the headboard on the bed, so…..

Spell Bottle for Inner Spirituality

Harnessing the Power Within

I worked with Co-Pilot to come up with this spell to help me connect with my Inner Spirituality. I filled eight small spell bottles with the ingredients and wove them into a garland with natural jute, which I hung across the headboard of the bed in the master bedroom. (see photos)

Ingredients:

Labradorite crystals

- Enhances psychic abilities

- Promotes intuition and insight

- Aids in spiritual exploration

Mugwort

- Facilitates dream work and astral projection

- Provides protection during spiritual practices

- Grounds and centers the energy

Elder Flower

- Cleanses and purifies energy

- Supports spiritual renewal and transformation

- Opens the heart and mind

Echinacea

- Strengthens and fortifies the spirit

- Promotes resilience and courage

- Helps in overcoming fears and doubts

Steps to Create the Spell Bottle:

  • Cleansing: Begin by cleansing your bottle and ingredients. This can be done by smudging with sage or using any preferred method of purification.

  • Charging: Charge each ingredient with your intention. Hold the labradorite crystal chips and visualize their energy enhancing your intuition. Focus on the mugwort’s protective qualities, the elder flower’s purifying energy, and the echinacea’s strengthening properties.

  • Combining: Place the ingredients into the bottle one by one. As you do so, speak your intention aloud, affirming your desire to connect with your inner spirituality.

  • Sealing: Once all ingredients are in the bottle, seal it tightly. You may choose to wrap it with a cord or ribbon as a symbol of binding your intentions.

  • Placement: Keep the spell bottle in a sacred space, such as an altar or a place where you meditate. Allow its energy to permeate your surroundings and support your spiritual journey. I used natural jute twine to tie 8 of these little spell bottles into a garland, and wrapped them across the headboard in the master bedroom.

CHALLENGE ENTRY NO. 2 – MUGWORT – LUCID DREAMS ASTRAL TRAVEL

I love mugwort and have a huge bush in my garden. I have made mugwort smudge sticks (see picture) and burn it as incense – extremely helpful for a good night’s sleep.

Mugwort – Artemisia Vulgaris is a tall aromatic perennial herb native to Europe, Asia and North America. It is used in traditional medicine for digestive aid, menstrual regulation and as a sleep aid or dream enhancing herb. It contains compounds like Thyone and artemisinin offering anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Use as a tea (although very bitter), in your bath water or in aromatherapy. Known in folklore for inducing vivid lucid dreams.

A member of the Artemisia family botanicals named in honor of the Greek lunar diety Artemis. Artemis protects women, wild nature of all kinds, fertility and creativity, witchcraft, magic and psychic ability. No other plant has more powerful associations with magic in general and dreams in particular.

Mugwort doesn’t give you psychic ability instead it unearths what is hidden within you and drags it kicking and screaming (if necessary) to the surface. Mugwort doesn’t produce dreams for you instead it flings open the gates to dreamland.

WARNING : Shouse not be used by pregnant women.

SOURCE: Encyclopedia of 5,000 spells by Judika Illes.

MUGWORT DREAM BATH

Add 1 teaspoon of dried mugwort to boiling water and allow to infuse for 10 minutes. Let it cool, strain and add to your bath water. You may also add a few drops of mugwort flower remedy as well. Also marketed under the French name Armoise.

MUGWORT DREAM INCENSE

Sprinkle mugwort leaves and stems broken down into your mini burning cauldron. Light a charcoal tablet or I use fire lighter blocks to aid the burning. Burn the incense just before bedtime. You may choose to enjoy a cup of chamomile tea as well. Go to be and sweet dreams.

ASTRAL PROJECTION POWDER

For your astral travel powder take

  • Cinnamon
  • Mugwort
  • Sandalwood

Grind the botanicals to a fine powder. Blend with some arrowroot powder. Sprinkle on your bed sheets before setting down to sleep. Enjoy your journey.

DITTANY OF CRETE AND MUGWORT POWDER

Dittany of Crete (Origanum Dictamnus)

Mugwort (Artemisia Vulgaris)

These 2 herbs are closely associated with Artemis and offer assistance with accomplishing astral travel projection and protection during the journey.

Burn the herbs as incense (see mugwort incense above) to accompany your journey.

Fill a dream pillow with the combined herbs.

Simultaneously appeal to ARTEMIS for assistance with your goal.

MUGWORT TEA – OPTION 1

Plain mugwort is very potent. A cup before bedtime will stimulate dreams but it tastes very bitter.

1 teaspoon dried mugwort in a cup of boiling water – steep 10 minutes – strain and drink. You may like to add honey.

MUGWORT TEA – OPITON 2

  • 1 teaspoon dried mugwort
  • 1 teaspoon dried lemon balm
  • 1 teaspoon dried hibiscus

This makes more than one cup so store for later use. Mix botanicals together. Add 1 teaspoon of the mix in a cup of boiling water – steep 10 minutes – strain and drink. You may like to add honey.

This is my first Challenge Entry  I don’t use a smart phone/tablet so its difficult for me to share pics.

This was my inspiration baby sleep salve. I made a version of this

The ingredients I used were

  1. about 2/3 cup of oil (I used virgin coconut and lard from our animals)
  2. Two Tablespoons each dried chamomile and Lavender
  3. 2 Tablespoons bees wax
  4. 15 drops of lavender essential oil
  5. 15 drops Plant therapy kid safe sweet slumber blend Kid safe sweet slumber blend

First I put the oils, herbs, and beeswax into a double boiler on low

While it was melting and I was stirring I chanted while stirring clockwise “love light sweet dreams and deep sleep”

After everything was completely melted and well mixed remove from heat and let cool a little

Then add essential oils Stir a bit again. I knew this wasn’t going to be used on babies or young children which is why I chose to add the sweet slumber blend. I think if you will be using it on wee ones stick with just the lavender oil.

Pour into your containers (I used a small upcycled jar)and cool overnight. Cap it in the morning and store in a cool dark place.

While mine was cooling I chose to set it next to my amethyst geode. I asked the geode to infuse the salve with its calming and protective properties.

Hind sight- I wish I would’ve strained the plant material before pouring into container and adding essential oils.

I am blessed that I don’t have problems with sleep right now. I don’t have a job to go to, so I am able to sleep whenever I need to. It creates its own issues, so please don’t think I’m bragging.

My first chore just before 7 pm is to put away whatever I worked on during the day. After all, how many of us have been kept awake due to a sink full of dishes or an unfinished project?

Secondly, I make sure the apartment will hold heat through the night. If I expect the furnace to give out at a certain time in the morning, I turn on other forms of heating to keep temps even and comfortable.

Third, I check the day’s high temps and update my calendar. I write what I ate and other health issues, both positive and negative.

Then I read through what’s going on here. I cast along while I read, so this is my Sacred Time. Albus let’s me know when it’s time to go to bed, usually. He is a great timer.

At about 9:15 or so, I turn off the music which has been on repeat all day, turn on the smaller bedside light, and set up my Fire tablet so I can read without bothering my roommate (darken the screen as far as it will go and find the last page read before). Final bathroom break and turn off the overhead lights. I say my usual good night message and turn off the light when Albus settles down and gets still. Sometimes, he still flutters a bit, so I turn the light back on and let him get comfortable. Then I read in the dark until I fall asleep. Even when I meditated myself to sleep with headphones on, I would wake when the tablet went into sleep mode.

The first sleep of the night is rarely more than a nap. When the tablet light goes out from lack of use, I wake enough to use the restroom again and curl up on my other side… if I’m sleepy and healthy. If not, I’ll then go out to the living room to watch a movie with headphones on, no lights. I’ll often fall asleep before the end of the movie.

This is not really a witchy pattern. Sorry to be disappointing. The following may be more habit than witchcraft.

I like wearing minty lip gloss at night if my lips are dry. The chill seems to help heal.

If I have any stiffness or stuffiness, I’ll apply a mixture of menthol, eucalyptus, camphor, cedar, nutmeg, thyme, and pine in petroleum jelly (aka vaporizing rub). Of course, I’ll have to use Murphy’s Oil Soap to get it out of my clothes afterward.

The real Magick happens when I wake up to n the night. I don’t dare look at a clock, or I’ll be up at the same time the next night. Instead, I make sure I keep my eyes closed to nearly slits to preserve sleepiness. When I go back to bed, I rehearse any previous dream I may have been having. If I then find myself walking down a flight of stairs, the night is over. I then get up and mess with the computer in the living room- no indoor lights because the street light outside my window is bright enough for most quiet activities.

And with that, Albus has decided it is time for bed for tonight.

“Georgie loves her good little Albus. Night night, baby. Sweet dreams.”
