catch up challenge

How many challenges can I do during the Catch-Up period?

If you are feeling particularly adventurous and want to do more than just the usual one challenge, you can do:

Up to SEVEN CHALLENGES

This limit exists to encourage mindfulness on each challenge- please remember that, although some challenges have similar themes, every challenge requires its own unique entry in order to receive the corresponding badge :medal_sports:

But I want to earn all of the badges!

That is awesome- I am so happy that you enjoy the badges so much!

At the end of the day, badges are just a small token- the challenges are really here to help you improve and enhance your magickal practice. So please try to take your time with your exploration of the theme(s) you choose- they are here to help you help yourself! :sparkles:

(On an administrative note, the limit also exists to save your challenge moderator from a potential ocean of badge-giving for all the various challenges at once! :ocean:)

But for challenge enthusiasts and badge collectors- no fear! You can rest assured that another chance to join in on any additional missed challenges will come again soon. You can expect another Catch-Up Challenge and a chance to earn old badges every ten challenges :+1:

Not sure which challenges you already participated in? :ballot_box_with_check:

How to Join the Challenge :trophy:

In order for your entry to be counted, all you have to do is write/share about your experience and label it as your challenge entry. Labeling helps let me know which posts among the many replies, general conversation, and other comments are intended as entries.

:exclamation: Because there are a lot of possible challenges, please don’t forget to include the name of the chosen challenge(s) and/or the badge(s) you want somewhere in your post.

If you do not include a challenge or badge name with your entry, I will have to use my best guess and you may not get the badge you were hoping for - so please be sure to mention it!

Where Do I Share My Entry?

Click here to learn where to share your challenge entry

You are welcome to post it right here- just click “reply” :repeat: to this post and write your experience in the text box that pops up!

Alternatively, you could create a new post in the forum (this is good for when you have a lot to share and/or would like to discuss aspects of your entry not related to the current theme)

Note : If you do choose to create a new thread, please add the “challenge-entry” tag and/or add a hyperlink back to this post so that it can be easily found- thank you! :bowing_woman:

Click here for a note for our lovely lurkers

Everyone is welcome to join the challenge. For those who would like the challenge prizes, please know that you will need to share your experience if you want to receive a prize and a public shout-out.

Don’t feel comfortable sharing? No fear! For lurkers and those who are shy, it is absolutely okay to follow along with the challenge on the sidelines. At the end of the day, these challenges are here to help you help yourself by expanding and enhancing your personal magickal practice. I hope they can be helpful for you!

It’s a challenge in itself to sit down and figure out which ones I’ve missed. LOL! I need to write it down or something.

Thanks for the Catch-Up, love!

I know some long-time challenge experts may skim over the main post, so just highlighting a few notes to be aware of:

There is an extended deadline for this challenge! I am going on a roadtrip from the 20th into that weekend and won’t be around much, so I figured having all the challenges stay open is more fun than not having a challenge. To reflect this, the challenge limit has been increased from five challenges to seven:

So if you’re feeling ambitious, go crazy! There are a lot of challenges covering so many areas of magick to explore here. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone chooses

The Freebie Challenge is now on the roster! Entering this one works the same as it did in the original challenge. Just comment something along the lines of “this is my entry to the Freebie Challenge”, and you’re in  :+1:

My pleasure, Amethyst! And goodness I know - there are so many challenges now, recordkeeping has become part of the adventure!

Happy challenging! :sparkling_heart:

CHALLENGE ENTRY-Chakras

I have been working with chakras for decades, but there is always something new to pick up. Today I learned about corresponding herbs for each chakra. The ones that resonate for me:
Crown-white sage
Third eye-jasmine
Throat-peppermint
Heart-rose
Solar plexus-fennel
Sacral-hibiscus
Root-calendula
Here are my personal balancing stones, and some charts I work with. I place obsidian below the root chakra to ground, and clear quartz above the crown chakra to cleanse and energize.

I believe I have the Crystal Bible I believe I have an abundance of information it’s just first where in the heck did that book go ? I think it’s black and has pictures of like five crystals in the front? Anyway I like the pictures in there and would love to re-visit this book!
I have been listening to audiobooks so when I don’t feel like reading them I’ll just listen and I am reading a book called

I am trying to work with other other deities and and implement them more into everyday magic. whenever I need something, I feel like it’s really taking me a long time to get to this place because sometimes I don’t know what I need. Having to put everything together is another challenge! This book is a really great book for people who are trying to use Magick bend reality through the different Gods and Goddesses!
So today, I’m gonna figure out what challenges I am gonna catch up on and I’m up for the challenge!
Namaste :folded_hands:t4:

@BryWisteria
Thank you Bre tonight I am handcrafting my own tarot cloth I’ll show you!
I started with a really pretty one but lost my project in the abyss so I started a new one! It’s for my light sea tarot deck! I really like this deck I’m not sure why but I love the turquoise it’s by Chris Ann and it says and into the gray we follow like 1000 flickering stars and there’s sunlight hollow we lose in find what is ours?
Dear light and shadows here in the deli help you find what is yours so this deck is about finding your shadow and I need a lot of shadow work !

This challenge is for the Handcrafting Challenge which I believe @MeganB created because she loves her crochet, she’s definitely a handy witch! :woman_mage:
So I have my wand it’s my crochet hook :hook: I am the crochet :yarn: Witchy woman
Tarot Card Wrap
Finding ways to make space to play with my cards :joker:
I just love my decks so I decided to

I better get busy !

:purple_spell_candle: Challenge entry Colorful Candle Magic :purple_spell_candle:

Can I just say: I love candles!!!

Candle magic was and is the go-to magical practice for me, because simply the act of carving a sigil, rune, symbol, intent or a name into a candle, maybe adding some corresponding oils, herbs and crystals - it is meditation, it provides powerful energy shifts, it´s also a reminder to me that there is actually a spell being worked.

For many many years I would use just regular birthday candles, tea-lights or pillar candles, which are perfect if you want to carve something into the wax. But I always felt, that for special occasions or specific spells I wanted…something different!! But it turned out that even though Vienna is a big city (we have 2 million people living here!) the few spiritual shops that there are don´t carry any figure candles, even the 7 day glass candles are hard to get - and expensive!
So, I started to make them myself!! :sparkles: Over the years I built a collection of silicone wax molds and some of them were really hard to get, especially the regular male/female person candle. I think it must be almost seven or eight years that I´ve bought them over Amazon, and they were really expensive, like 25 Euros a piece. Later I discovered Temu and they have so so many silicone molds and for a much better price. So, if you ever want some molds, go and look there!!
What I also love doing is making linocuts, print them on thin rice-paper and glue it on glass jars to put a tealight into. Of course you can also print out some images and glue them to your seven-day glass candles, or even paint your sigils, runes and intents on with just an acrylic marker. There are so many possibilities! :purple_heart:

I hope my entry is a fun read for you and maybe got you inspired to try candle making yourself?

Here´s some information, that I wish I had known back then:

Different types of wax

Paraffin is the cheapest wax, but it’s a petroleum product, so it’s not particularly healthy; if you light paraffin candles, always open a window if possible. Paraffin is very soft and has a low melting point (50-60°C). A pure paraffin candle melts very quickly, which is why it’s recommended to make a mixture with stearin. Stearin wax is a mixture of stearic and palmitic acids, which are obtained from the corresponding vegetable and animal fats and oils through saponification. Therefore, stearin is not vegan (if that’s important to you), and its melting point is around 60 to 70°C. Stearin candles often also contain palm oil, which is an environmental problem. Candles made from only Stearin are very hard and burn down very slow. I found a mix (40:60 or 50:50) of both materials works very well!
If you don´t mind spending a bit more money you can try soy wax. Soy wax melts at around 54°C, resulting in a softer candle. Soy wax is generally considered non-toxic and a healthier, more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional paraffin wax. It burns cleanly with minimal soot and does not release toxic substances such as benzene or toluene. Furthermore, it is biodegradable, vegan, and burns more slowly than paraffin candles. Wax derived from rapeseed has similar properties. Rapeseed is very common in European countries, while soy is more prevalent in the USA, so if you want to avoid long transport routes, you can choose accordingly. Never forget that we as consumers can make informed choices that benefit our environment.
Last but not least, we have bees wax on our list. Beeswax is a wax secreted by honeybees, which they use to build their honeycombs. Beeswax is extremely precious and must therefore be treated with great spiritual care and respect: A single bee needs approximately 4 to 10 grams of honey and 1 gram of pollen to produce 1 gram of wax. It is a pure natural product with a melting point between 62 and 65 °C. It is edible (yes, you read that right), compostable, and versatile in its reuse; it burns non-toxically and has a pleasant honey scent. Beeswax candles are a wonderful offering to Aphrodite!

Scent and color

There are various products available for scenting and coloring candles. When purchasing, please ensure that they do not release any toxic substances into the air! If it is not declared as safe or non-toxic, I would not use it. Natural essential oils can certainly be used. I recommend not heating the wax too much (max. 50°C) so that the essential oil doesn’t immediately lose its fragrance. Wax dyes can be purchased at craft stores or on Amazon and are not expensive. They are very economical, and you often only need a few flakes for a medium-sized candle.

What kind of wick?

Candle wicks differ primarily in material (cotton, wood), braiding (flat vs. round), and thickness, which significantly influences their burning behavior. Flat wicks are suitable for thin waxes (paraffin), while round wicks are better suited for thicker waxes (beeswax, stearin). Choosing the right wick is crucial to avoid soot and ensure even burning.

Here are the main differences:

  • Flat wick: Consists of three flat-bound cotton strands, ideal for paraffin and stearin. The direction of the strands is irrelevant.
  • Round wick: Braided in a circle with a core bundle, ideal for beeswax and thicker waxes. Important: The direction of rotation (arrow pointing upwards) must be observed.
  • Wooden wick: Burns with a crackling sound, ideal for scented candles and creates a special ambiance.
  • Waxed wicks: Are coated with wax, which makes lighting easier, and often have a metal base, ideal for poured candles in glass containers.

Important selection criteria:

  • Wax type: Beeswax generally requires round wicks, paraffin often flat wicks.
  • Candle diameter: The larger the diameter, the thicker the wick must be.
  • Fragrance/color: If a lot of fragrance oil or color is added, a slightly larger wick should be chosen to prevent clogging.
  • Burn: A good wick does not produce soot and burns the candle completely to the edge.

And finally I want to share my favorite video about candle magic with you. It´s the lovely Olivia Graves, aka The Witch of Wonderlust and Dylan, who is also a witch and author.

Grab a cuppa and make yourself cosy!

I think my theme this catch up will be to focus on the Latin named challenges. There are 11 which I haven’t done as yet, but I can get a good start on them.

Challenge Entry 1

Of Goals and Intent- Finis Patrator

This isn’t New Year’s, but half way through. I usually don’t set goals on New Year’s Eve because the intent to set goals comes from outside myself, and is thus doomed to fail. I’d prefer to set my goals when my heart is in it.

Last New Year’s, I had no clue what to wish for or act toward. The energies swirling around me in a dense fog of confusion have begun to settle a bit. Five months later? It’s about time!

I have not set a goal: goals have been setting around me. My intent seems to be to take care of those who take care of me. Thus, I have had two possible directions, lately.

One seems to be failing miserably: maintaining decent living conditions for my driver. Please consider this a warning tale of the need for self care. Her family seems to be sucking the energy for their own use, which was also necessary, but it is putting my driver into the wall, if I may use a NASCAR euphemism. Her daughter is now settling into a new home with her son-in-law a place more conducive to health than their moldy, infested previous apartment. This pulls some stress off my driver’s shoulders. I am happy the energy could be used in a positive way to help as many as possible.

My driver’s brother, on the other hand, couldn’t care less about anything or anyone. He’s blood, so she feels responsible, but he continually puts himself in harm’s way, selfishly uses resources intended for other purposes, and refuses to help take care of what little his sister has to share. Thus, the RV they live in is falling apart due in part to neglect. My driver and her brother have not learned that resources are finite and must be focused in order to do the work intended. Therein lies the weak link.

I have been able to focus my resources and needs so my stuff is covered. When the resources are gone, she is able to back off. I do not feel drained by vampirism, only concerned that she does not have the ability to take care of herself. She deserves better, but until she learns to self care, she will destroy herself in the effort to take care of others.

The second possible goal direction concerns another pair of volunteers who are equally generous in their time and resources. These two have been attacked by an outsider rather than a family member. They were able to shut down and do self care. The side effects are that they were unable to continue supporting a community which they helped to create. This community is thus damaged by the actions of one person. My goal was to rally the community to support the ones who supported them. This was successful. I was told last night that people were coming out of the woodwork to help the volunteers. I consider this spell wildly successful, and the main difference is self care. My magic and I had little to do with the outcome. I feel like a successful Schmendrick in the Last Unicorn. Now to choose my receivers more carefully.

I’m sorry that this is difficult for both of you, but this is a horse to water situation. She won’t learn until she wants to. I’m sorry.

Yay! Great spellwork! I think a lot of things with spells and magic is that you have to work for things that are possible. Like, I could do a thousand spells to get me more money, but unless I buy a lottery ticket and win, that’s not going to happen.

But if I do something for prosperity, things usually work well for me. Someone will send me some spaghetti noodles they weren’t needing, or clean out their freezer and give me something. So maybe instead of working for your driver to have a better living situation, maybe do something to help her with her own self-care, or set boundaries.

Just an idea. Good luck, Schmendrick!
