:pagan_altar: WITCH CHALLENGE - Altar Design

Merry meet,

Thank you once again to all those who joined in for the previous Witch Challenge - Instant Magick

After embracing magick in the moment, we’re rolling up our sleeves and getting architectural - it’s time to spend some time at the witch’s altar! :candle:

The theme for this challenge is…

:candle: :pagan_altar: Altar Design :offering_bowl: :sparkles:
Designing, making, and tending to sacred spaces

Do you have an altar? A witch’s altar can be anything from an elaborate ritual space to a single candle brought out for spellwork. It may be a permanent part of your home or a temporary set-up you can carry on the go. All that is to say that an altar is as unique and special as the witch who created it.

For this challenge, we’re taking a thorough look at what a witch’s altar can be and how it might be used in a magickal practice. You might consider sharing about your altar, reflecting on its design or purpose, making a new altar, experimenting with travel altars, casting a spell at your altar, or considering why an altar doesn’t resonate for you and your practice. Whatever you choose, it’s all about altars!

This challenge is about altars in your magickal practice - how you choose to take on this theme is up to you. So are you ready? Because it’s…

Challenge Entry - Altar Design

Hmmm, well my entry this time won’t be spectacular as I don’t keep a permanent shrine or alter per say but I’ll share pictures in a few minutes of what I do have. :candle:

Ok I’m back  I use my desk as my altar and items for rituals are set out on my desk for the duration of th ritual and them put back on one of two bookcases that hold my books, tools and all my collections of biological materials (plants, seeds, nuts, feathers, bones)

Currently my desk altar is clear for working on other things but I always have my favorite things on the base of my monitor. Feel free to ask about any of the photos or items in the photos. Otherwise, enjoy the photo spam!

My alter itself is rather plain, it moves where I want to put it: so that works better for me.

In the center of the goddess plate you can see a spell jar:

I think my son will love this challenge. Hes always arranging the things or lighting candles and leaving things for the house spirits.

I am curious what the difference is between shrine and alter is for you guys?

definition of shrine from Merriam-Webster

: a case, box, or receptacle

especially : one in which sacred relics (such as the bones of a saint) are deposited

: a place in which devotion is paid to a saint or deity : sanctuary

: a niche containing a religious image

: a receptacle (such as a tomb) for the dead

: a place or object hallowed by its association

Marriam-Websters definition of altar

a usually raised structure or place on which sacrifices are offered or incense is burned in worship

—often used figuratively to describe a thing given great or undue precedence or value especially at the cost of something else

sacrificed his family life on the altar of career advancement

: a tablelike construction used in the Christian church in celebrating the Eucharist

: a table or place which serves as a center of worship or ritual

—often used with the to refer to the act of getting married

I think my space is more of a shrine as I don’t really do crafting or rituals there. I mainly leave offerings. Also I feel like its “kosher” for me to leave things for the house spirits and other entities (not sure if that’s the right word I’m looking for)  in the same little area….correct me if I’m wrong please.:blossom:

CHALLENGE ENTRY

Maybe that was a little too strong  I always forget to write it as my challenge entry and I did not want to forget this time.

I think I have posted before about my travel altar. I use an Altoids tin to hold everything. I have a feather for Air, a BIC lighter for Fire, a well-worn seashell for Water, a regular marble to represent Earth, and/or a piece of bark for Earth. I have the broken end (only handle missing) of an obsidian athame that fits perfectly, and a penny. All of this is in my Altoids box for on-the-go ease.

In my bedroom I have a hand-stitched face towel (3 diff. towels, 3 diff. colors) that I use as the altar cloth, I have (currently), a small bottle with gold flakes that I picked up at the Grand Canyon for Earth, incense for my Air, my tea candle for Fire, and a shell for Water. My pentacle in the middle and my wand sits with it all. I have other items for the 4 elements and I change those out occasionally also.

When I perform my oblations outside, I have a large tree stump that I place my BOS for Earth, incense for Air, candle for Fire, and a water bottle for Water. After my oblations, I bless the ladies with my water, toss my incense on the ground and bring the candle in until it burns out (about 4 hours).

If I am out and about, the earth is my altar, and I have a portable wand that I carry, I salute the elements and do my “thang”.

Witchy Wednesday C,

With the definitions provided, I guess mine is more of an altar, but I do not perform rituals there. But it is also a shrine because it is “hallowed by its association”. So, a little of both, kind of like most of us do not fit into only one category.:slightly_smiling_face:

@BryWisteria I have to say I love love love this topic for a challenge!!! Thank you so much! :purple_heart: I can´t wait to ramble about all my altars and show them off.

This is my alter. I use that word loosely since I am still so new at this. I mostly keep the things that bring me joy. I have colored candles coming soon so I can start with some simple spell work. I need to still do some research on circles and alter cloths. I am so excited to be part of this group!

Well, how fun! Since we’re showing off our altars, it will give me an excuse to cleanse! My bedroom is my sanctuary, and my altar and worktable are up at all times. My daughter, her father, those closest to me know what it’s for. I’ve had other people see it. If they don’t ask questions, I don’t volunteer information lol! I also have an ancestor altar in my living room. I don’t think I’ve ever shown that one! I’ll do this on Saturday when I have quiet time to myself.

Witchy Wednesday,:witch_hat:

Y’all have such beautiful altars. I try to live a minimal existence and do not use many items and have little room (those who know…know).

But these are sooooo beautiful. “Can I come over to play?”:magic_wand: :witch_cauldron: :witch_moon:

My first altar was set up on top of a dresser but since I didn’t do anything other than walk past it, I decided to get a secretary desk for the bedroom that I could use as an altar.

Most of the time it’s like this, but each when I do my morning devotional and meditation, I can lower the desktop and set it up as needed. I’ve got a selection of herbs in jars on the shelves above it .

Here it is set up for Ostara.

And since I spend a lot of time on the computer I have some witchy stuff there too, crystals, altar cards etc

CHALLENGE ENTRY
This is my beautiful little “sanity saver” altar I created, to keep in my purse for emergencies. I have salt, crystals, palo santo, a candle, matches, lavender oil, and odds and ends that seemed to resonate. I clipped the art from my coloring book of shadows datebook. Just having it with me is wonderful!

 Fair enough, I guess you got me there. I suppose I don’t feel like I have an altar because, in my mind, I think it needs to be a permanent, structured space. But maybe it doesn’t have to be? And thank you for the compliment - My little treasures, purchased, found, and made, make me smile when I walk into my office.

I’m loving this Challenge already!!

@Artemisia - beautiful photos of your bookshelves filled with your treasures. And I see you’re a bit of a Stephen King fan. I can relate! (I’ve not seen anyone with a copy of Night Shift - ever!)

I’m looking forward to your post! :sparkling_heart:

I think it’s perfect! I love your view to the outdoors, too!

What an inspired idea! Works perfectly, keeps everything together and it’s a lovely piece of furniture all by itself. Lovely!

Perfection in a tiny space - this is brilliant!

Can’t wait to see what else you creative souls will share. :sparkles:

You seem to be doing fine. Your altar should be a reflection of your own personal magick and rituals you prefer. Just use your instinct, and have what you use and need at hand. There is no wrong or right way, just what works for you.

Witch Challenge Alter Design*****
For right now my alter is a very basic one. I dont have what I really would like on it due to I have to make it so no one knows that it is really an alter table. I have the major items we use on it like the candles a chalice, an incense bowl along with crystals and my athame on it it sits on top of a little table. Sorry I dont have any pictures of it right now to show everyone.
