CHALLENGE ENTRY
Keeping an altar is one of the first things I started doing when I began my spiritual practice, and I think it’s the one that brings me the most daily joy and is the most meaningful to me. So I’m loving this challenge and loving everyone’s altars! Inspiring and so personal. Thank you for sharing.

I tend to mine almost daily and clean it thoroughly once a week. It’s in the corner of my home office, next to my desk, so I spend lots of time near it. I have salt to the north, incense to the east, water to the west, and a candle for the south, usually the one I’ve used with an herb bowl for meditation that morning.

Every object there has a very special meaning. I keep a photograph of a family member or ancestor there- currently, that’s my dear sweet grandpa Fred when he was a baby  and also, one of my favorite pictures of my boys when they were little, with a protection jar and crystals that I alternate. the little goddess statue was one that spoke to me on a recent visit to Sedona, which honestly ended up being the beginning of a spiritual awakening for me. The little bird feeder ornament was one that I made as a child, and the snail shells and feathers were all found on Arkansas hikes. I have a lovely framed map of my beloved home state hanging above my altar, too, you can see it in the picture there with my familiar, who insisted on being part of this photo session :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: I also keep the cards I have drawn during practice each morning on the altar so that I am reminded of them and their messages throughout the day :snail::feather::brown_heart::sparkles:

Thanks again for sharing!

Super Saturday Shari,

I love it!! Just like my Altoids box altar….but, I never thought of the tray. I have a small one and have been wondering what to do with it. Guess you just “tole me”.

CHALLENGE ENTRY

Since I´ve posted pictures of my main working altar and seasonal altar in the “Show your altar” thread, I thought I might show you my two travel altars.

The first one is housed in a matchbox, which I decorated with a Pentacle on the front and a Triskele on the back.

It has Hecates wheel (Strophalos), a little key, a torch, a resin snake and a spellpouch with herbs in it. This one is in my backpack all day every day. I´m using it for a quick minute of prayer or reciting mantras, especially when I´m having stressful days. As you can see, it is a bit shabby and worn, it´s well used and in my bag since many moons.

And this is my tin travel altar. It´s a bit larger than an Altoid box and I will take it on trips or when I´m out at some sacred space here in Vienna.

I decorated the lid with linoprints that I made, Pentacle, Wand, Chalice and Athame to represent the elements.

Here is what I´m taking with me to witchy field trips (from left to right) a small jar of rosemary, some matches and black string, a lighter, a tealight, prayer beads, some herbs and incense in a little tin, my pendulum, a pencil and some paper scraps for spells, and a little envelope that holds some sigils for instant magick.

The sigils are each for a different purpose, with the spell written on the back, I can simply say the spell and burn the sigil for some magick. :dizzy:

I don´t have any crystals in my travel altars, because I´m choosing a different crystal every day to have in one of my pockets.

I loved reading everyones entry! :purple_heart: There are so many beautiful altars, the creativity and love put into them is a whole vibe!! :rainbow: :unicorn: :dressed_candle:

This is really beautiful. I’m going to be traveling some this summer and I’ve been a little anxious about how to keep up with a practice while away from my home. These travel altar pictures are so inspiring! :brown_heart::snail: thank you for sharing

everyone’s altars are wonderful and so unique! :green_heart:
This is my challenge entry. Im going to read though all pages about the different types of altars at the top of this challenge. Im sure I will learn much!

here is a description of my little space. My cloth is currently a pillow case turquoise in color. Atop the case is a rabbit skin that we raised and processed for meat ourselves. I have a small jar of rose petals that were a gift from a loved one, a midsize amethyst geode, a small upcycled glass yogurt container for offerings, a tallish brass tapered candle holder :white_candle: which I applied a large blue butterfly sticker too. There is also a little blue basket that hold stones& pebbles that I have collected (I leave neat stones as offerings quite often). The the basket has a pink ribbon with black polka dots tired around its top and a sparkly silver butterfly sticker. There is also a pine cone a clear glass “potion bottle”:purple_potion: with water, a turkey feather, incense stick, and a white pillar candle + an “ocean” scented candle that I also put a sparkly butterfly on.

O and a small brigid cross that I made out of soft plant tie wire I think it was called which is green. :brigid_cross:

My altar varies quite a bit due to the weather: I don’t burn candles or incense in summer due to the heat. There are pics of my altar, fully dressed in the altars thread. That has waned- though maybe only due to an instinct prior to a neighbor’s visit, as we still have lovely weather until the end of May, here.

I took an old bird cage support and put a piece of wood atop. It is on wheels so I can maneuver it to the center of the bedroom each morning and back to a corner out of the way and unseen by casual visitors.

The tins on the shelf contain all my tools. They used to fit into one tin, but my incense collection grew enough to be pared with extra candles. In summer, I’ll pack the tins in a piece of luggage for safety and cleanliness, though I may keep out my oracle staves in case another neighbor wants a reading. The candle holder doesn’t fit anywhere, so I am researching ways to replace it; however, I do like having the candles above the rest of the table and tools.

Inside one tin is two mini tins, each containing travel altars. They are treasure troves rather than active altars, for the time being. If I need one or the other for any reason, they are ready, filled with representations of the elements in differing forms- colors of sand, glowing “stones,” feathers of various colors, a crystal collection, essential oils to represent the elements…

I made a charm bracelet with images of the elements which I could wear if I couldn’t take a tin with me or didn’t want to be obvious about my beliefs.

Packed in my luggage is a small circle of leather which gathers to form a pouch. Perfect for an altar cloth! I filled it with tiny dolls I’d made on a fork using embroidery floss. Each doll is an elemental color. They stay packed in case of emergency travel.

Even my Lego flowers are based on the elements and can be used as an altar.

Then I have my “Magickal Cabinet.” In it, I keep my supplies as neatly as I can.

Challenge Entry

I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out what to do for this challenge. When I first saw it, I was thrilled — altars are absolutely my thing. But then I stopped and thought, wait a minute… I always take pictures of my altars. If I do that again, is it really a challenge? I photograph every single altar I create. Each one feels like a little work of art, and I love being able to look back at them through the years. When I scroll through photos from four years ago, I can still remember exactly where I found each tiny treasure.

Even my husband gets in on the fun. Whenever we wander into a resale shop or estate sale, he somehow manages to spot the most unusual, magical little items. One of my favorites was a sunflower plate I found at Goodwill. I used it constantly — for spells, for offerings, for decoration. One day it broke. My first instinct was to grab the superglue, but instead I tossed it in the trash. I was upset, of course, but I had so many photos of it that it softened the loss. Now, of course, I wish I had glued it back together because I’ve never found another one like it.

Altars are personal. Even if you never share them with the world, taking a picture can be a beautiful way to watch your taste, your style, and your spiritual path evolve over time.

TW: Death

There is one altar in my home that I never share: my ancestor altar. It holds photos, small belongings, and little gifts from loved ones who have passed on. Friends, family, people who shaped my life in ways big and small. That altar is sacred in a different way — private, quiet, and meant only for me. Maybe someday I’ll share it, but for now, it remains a space I keep just for myself.

CHALLENGE ENTRY - ALTAR DESIGN
Upcycling Project

Although I have many mini altar’s set up throughout my home, I am currently upcycling an old meat safe into an Altar. I have so many ideas in mind, but I know it will be mostly purples as that is my favourite colour.

I have so far removed the shelves and the doors and started the undercoat. Then it has come to a standstill for a while, but this challenge has renewed my enthusiasm to finish the project. The hard part is finding the exact right decals and decoupage for the piece that match my spirituality and energy. The sides are mesh and the doors on the front are solid. It previously had one shelf added later not part of the original and very poorly done so I plan on putting 2 shelves into the cabinet that match the construction of the piece. These are a few ideas I have found on Pinterest.

I have a lot of homework to do!!!

Challenge Entry 2 - Pantry Altar

This is my butler’s pantry altar set-up. The BOS is actually a recipe book that I write my favourite (my signature) recipes in and their magical ingredients. The small jars to the right on the bench are for spell work. The pottery skull was made by my mother when I was in primary school a long-long time ago. She was not a witch and unfortunately is not with us anymore but certainly in spirit. I love crystals and have a huge collection therefore there are pieces all round my home. My witch, her name is “Benedetta”. It is of Italian origin and means “blessed”. She guards my pantry.

I am very proud of my pantry set up especially my pantry stock and herbs and spices. I love cooking and have a large herb garden as well. I dry my own fresh herbs where I can and I make my own spice mixes.

Blessed Be!
