Merry meet!

The theme for this week’s challenge is…

Incense Challenge

:incense: :fog: Incense :herb: :diya_lamp:

Incense, from the Latin word incendere meaning “to burn” (source), is a popular spiritual item used in rituals and as an offering.

Incense, being related to the element Air, plays a fundamental role in many witches’ practices. Different types of herbs are traditionally burned to exorcise and banish negative entities and to bring in good fortune and positive energy. Making incense is a meditative and enjoyable way to exercise your creativity!

From Spells8: Incense & Perfume

Used by various cultures, religions, and spiritual practices around the world, incense is an inexpensive and accessible magickal item, although costs and availability will depend on the type of incense you use.

Whether you have shelves full of incense boxes or are brand new to using incense - you’re invited to explore, learn, and share about this magickal item!

Is incense not a good match for your practice? From smoke-free living to health concerns, a lack of tools or otherwise, incense might not be right for you or your practice right now. If so, no worries! Substituting in magick is the act of exchanging one spell component for another. This is most often done using Correspondences.

Good morning :sunrise: Well, maybe early afternoon, I suppose.

I am in love :heartpulse: with this challenge. Perfect timing too! I was thinking about ways to expand my meditation practice now that I’ve gone through the basics again and learned a couple more skills. I was looking at the meditation incense :incense: recipe and thinking I should make some and maybe make the incense for each of my deities! :hugs: How wonderful this is what the challenge is for this week :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I’m excited to do this one. Depending on what Mother Nature decides for the rest of the week, I can make one sooner rather than later!

It’s been a long time since I’ve made my own incense blend. I think I’ll give it another go this challenge!

Challenge Entry - A Witch’s Incense 1a

This is my first go at making an incense blend, I decided to go with items I already had on hand.

Moonlit Guardians Incense

Ingredients:

  1. Artemis:
    • Cedarwood: Essential oil. Represents her connection to the forest and nature.
    • Mugwort: Dried herb. Often associated with the huntress aspect and intuition.
    • Cypress: Essential oil. Represents her connection to the forest and nature.
  2. Selene:
    • Frankincense: Resin. Has a calming, uplifting scent and is often associated with the moon.
    • Rose Petals: Dried petals. Symbolizes love and beauty, often linked with lunar energy.
    • ** Lavender**: Essential oil. For its protective and purifying qualities, and also its calming nature.
  3. Hekate:
    • Bay Leaves: Dried Herb. Used for protection and divination.
    • Rosemary: Dried Herb. Known for its protective and purifying qualities.
    • Black Salt: Provides strong protective energy.

I used an herb grinder to save time crushing up the dry ingredients.

Then I put the mix in a jar, added the essential oils, and mixed them in.

I'll let them sit overnight and then mix in a binder before I shape them into cones. **Part 2 tomorrow!**

I just watched your video!! I might have to see if I can find Makko powder locally for next time.

I wish I still had some :joy: I think you can probably use charcoal instead but I’ve never tried it. You can also just leave the Makko powder out :woman_shrugging: I think it just helps the incense have a more even burn.

I’ve seen some recipes include gum arabic, which I have to make inks, so I’ll try that and see how it goes. I do have small-grain charcoal (activated charcoal) that I can use as well. I looked online for Makko and too expensive for the little I’d use it. Plus using what I already have fits with my theme

Challenge Entry – A Witch’s Incense

Owl Incense

I found an incense recipe to call in one of my animal guides - the owl.

I will need for one cup of incense:

  • 1/4 cup Lavender - soothes the nervous system, opens the third eye and heart chakras, and purifies the body
  • 1/4 cup Cinnamon chips ground - opens the heart and base chakras, amplifies intuition, raises energetic vibrations, clears negativity and promotes healing
  • 1/8 cup Eucalyptus - opens the throat chakra for heightened communication and emotional clarity
  • 1/8 cup Ginger - opens the heart and solar plexus chakras, instills feelings of power and love, clears negative energy and raises vibrations in the body
  • 1/8 cup Sage - clears sacred space and raises vibrations in the home
  • 7 drops of Rose oil - promotes thoughts of love, opens the heart chakra and invites the Angels and Guides in to speak with me.

Owl incense will connect me with the wisdom and knowledge of the owl. After meditating with this incense I hope to feel more intuitive. My dreams may bring messages from loved ones who have passed over.

Quick question. My asthma makes lighting incence tricky and just recovering from chest infection. But i use my oil diffuser more often as an alternative because its both water and air… not quite fire and air like incence… but i guess the difuser heats the water and oil to turn it to steam instead of smoke. Can i do an entry on a mix for my oil diffuser as alternative to incence for this challenge. I mean i use my chamomile and sage oil to cleanse a space rather than sage incence etc… but just wanted to check if it still fits into the realm of incence even if in a slightly difderent form as i do use my oil diffuser more now as an alternative to incence purely because of my asthma even thoigh i do love watching the smoke patterns on incence sticks

So as mentioned due to my asthma i dont use incence much as it does trigger my asthma and id been recovering from chest infection recently so didnt want to risk it, though i love watching the dmoke patterns ill admit…

But as altnative i use is oil difusser still air in that warer snd oil turned to steam and can still use correspondences.

So discovering it was Imbolc ( snuck up on me as been unwell alot lately…) but so i looked up correspondence for imbolc and found 3 i could combine for a imbolc mix in the oil difusser which are aldo cirrespondenced for incence

  • lavender
  • frankinscence
  • chamomile
I have lavender and frankinscence essential oil anc also chamomile and sage oil too. So that was what i decided to do was my imbolc diffuser revipe rather than incence. Nicer on my lungs snd the difuser also acts as a kinda light which is nice at night whrn trying to unwind and dont want bright light on. Ill turn difuser on with oils and that would be s gentle light.
