How many challenges can I do this week?

If you are feeling particularly adventurous this week and want to do more than just the usual one challenge, you can do:

Up to THREE CHALLENGES

This limit exists to encourage mindfulness on each challenge- please remember that, although some challenges have similar themes, every challenge requires its own unique entry in order to receive the corresponding badge :medal_sports:

But I want to earn all of the badges!

That is awesome- I am so happy that you enjoy the badges so much!

At the end of the day, badges are just a small token- the challenges are really here to help you improve and enhance your magickal practice. So please try to take your time with your exploration of the theme(s) you choose- they are here to help you help yourself! :sparkles:

(On an administrative note, the limit also exists to save your challenge moderator from a potential ocean of badge-giving for all the various challenges at once! :ocean:)

But for challenge enthusiasts and badge collectors- no fear! You can rest assured that another chance to join in on any additional missed challenges will come again soon. You can expect another Catch-Up Challenge and chance to earn old badges every ten challenges :+1:

Not sure which challenges you already participated in? :ballot_box_with_check:

Click here to learn how to check which badges you already have

If you can’t remember if you completed a challenge or not, no worries! You can go to the challenge page and check the entries to see if you submitted.

Additionally, you can go to your Badges page to see a collection of all the titles you previously earned.

Here is how to check your badges:

  1. Click on your avatar/picture icon at the top right-hand side of any page in the forum.
  2. Click on the person icon and select “Summary”.
  3. Next, click on “Badges”

Here you can see all the badges you have earned during your time exploring the forums!

STEP 2: Share Your Entry(ies) to the Challenge :writing_hand:

Click here for notes about challenge inclusivity

Everyone is welcome to join the challenge by practicing magick in line with the current theme. For lurkers and those who don’t feel comfortable sharing, it is absolutely okay to follow along with the challenge but keep your entry personal. Feel free to join in spirit and do what feels most comfortable for you!

That being said, please know that if you would like to receive a prize and a public shout-out, it is required that you share your experience.

Getting Your Credit :white_check_mark:

:exclamation: IMPORTANT : Please don’t forget to include the name of the chosen challenge and/or the badge you want somewhere in your post as well!

If you do not include a challenge or badge name with your entry, I will have to use my best guess and you may not get the title you were hoping for- so please be sure to mention it!

After you have chosen an old challenge (or two, or three!), completed your task, and are ready to share- all you have to do is write/share about your experience and label it as your challenge entry. There is a lot of chatting here (which is awesome- chatting and discussion are very welcome!) so please please PLEASE clearly write that it is your entry so that I know to count it!

Where Should I Share My Entry?

Click here for instructions on where to share your entry

You are welcome to post it right here- just click “reply” :repeat: to this post and write your experience in the text box that pops up!

Alternatively, you could create a new thread in the forum (doing so keeps your entry separate and is a good option if you have a lot to share)

Note : If you do choose to create a new thread, please add the “challenge-entry” tag and/or add a hyperlink back to this post so that it can be easily found- thank you! :bowing_woman:

Deadline :spiral_calendar:

:exclamation: This challenge will close in 6 DAYS :exclamation:

To join in, please share your experience by:

Tuesday, August 27 at 7:00 AM ET (Eastern US Time)
2024-08-27T11:00:00Z

(Note that the time zone is ET- if you don’t see your time displayed above, you can use this time zone calculator to check for your time zone!)

Prizes :gift:

For their efforts, all participants will receive a special shout-out and a small prize! :gift:

Acknowledgments will be given in a Props and Presents Post that will appear in the forums on Tuesday.

After the challenge closes, you are still very welcome to post but please be aware that no additional prizes will be given. This discussion will remain open for about a week after the challenge finishes.

:gift_heart: :gift: :gift_heart:

A warm reminder that the challenges are designed to be very open- everyone is encouraged to participate in a way that honors and reflects their unique practice :open_book:

If you have any doubts about if something is acceptable to post or say, please double-check with the Forum FAQ and/or reach out to your friendly Moderator Team .

And for those new to challenges- welcome! Know that the goal of these activities is to help you further diversify and strengthen your abilities and to bring together the Spells8 forum family to inspire and support one another in creative ways :hugs:

The clock has stopped so the door of missed opportunities can open once again- spread your wings and don’t be afraid to delve into a previously unexplored of magick!

Catch-up Challenge – The Lunisolar Calendar and Chinese New Year – Favored by Fortune

I am a Virgo born in the year of the Dragon so my primal zodiac sign is the Polar Bear.

Those born under the sign of the Polar Bear are individual, sensitive, observant and idealistic. They get what they want by improvising, using their intellect and courage to manipulate people and situations.

They are guided by their emotions and are sensitive to the way others treat them. They work hard to earn the respect of others.

They gain a sense of purpose by sharing their strength and the lessons they have learned.

Appearing distant or self-involved at times, true friends appreciate their honesty and forthrightness.

A suggested career choice is a computer programmer. (I did teach computer programming!)

There are a lot of intentions associated with the polar bear:

challenges, courage, danger, death, defense, determination, dream work, endurance, fear (none), guidance (spiritual), independence, introspection, knowledge (traditional), nurture, power (protection), problems, protection (maternal), quests, rebirth/renewal, self-worth, senses (hearing, smell), shamanic work, skills (survival), sleep, spirits (communicate with), strength, transformation, visions, wealth, willpower, and wisdom.

I placed a bowl of water on my altar and did this invocation/honoring ritual to invite the polar bear to help me out.

Animal Spirit Invocation/Honoring Ritual

Invite an animal spirit to help you out. Research its behavior and habitat and life cycle. You may discover something that resonates with an aspect of self-care you are looking for.

Collect a representation (figurine, postcard, photo) and consider making a little shrine.

Center and ground.

Visualize the animal standing before you. Say:

(name of animal), I call to you

I ask that you lend me your energy

That I may live a better life,

Cared for, safe, and supported.

In token of this request,

I offer you this fresh water,

Symbolic of life, transformation, and purification.

(Animal),

Bless me with your gifts,

So mote it be.

Hold the representation of the animal in your hands and visualize the animal you imagine before you flowing into the representation. Place it behind the bowl of water.

A day later, pour out the water and place the animal representation somewhere that you will see it often and be reminded of the animal’s energy.

By Arin Murphy-Hiscock in her book The Witch’s Book of Self-Care.

Challenge Entry - Witchy Media - Magickal Maestro

Are You a Cyber Witch?

In their book The Cyber Spellbook: Magick in the Virtual World, 2002, Sirona Knight and Patricia Telesco have a little fun describing the customs, characteristics and habits of the Cyber Witch.

Here is a little test to determine if you are a Cyber Witch. I have updated it for 2024. How many of the following apply to you?

  • When a spell isn’t working right, you reboot it.
  • You have candle wax on your phone.
  • You use the recycle bin as a banishing spell.
  • Your broom never crashes unlike your computer.
  • Your totem animal is a mouse.
  • Your mouse pad has a pentagram or other sigil that can be traced to evoke magick.
  • Buying virus software is part of your regular warding process.
  • Your chalice is a travel mug.
  • Your three finger lunar salute is Ctrl, Alt, Del.
  • Casting a spell includes hitting the Send icon.
  • You use your phone screen as a scrying surface.
  • You have gods named Bit and Rom.
  • If it is broken, your first thought is either to reboot, reformat, unplug and plug back in, or get the duct tape.
  • The Threefold Law says “Everything shall be backed up in three places.”
  • Your Rede says: “Do as you will, but spam none.”
  • You visit your favorite coven on Spells8 at least once a day.

The authors state: “Cyber Witches know that laughter has very real power. It breaks up negativity. If you’ve ever watched someone with the giggles, you’ve seen how it becomes contagious. Laughter creates its own cone of power that can be directed by a well trained metaphysician.”

Catch-up Challenge – Salty Spellwork – Imperium salis

Salt has many uses in a magickal practice. You can create protective barriers, cleanse a space or tools, increase the purifying effects of moon water with a pinch of salt, make offerings to some deities, add salt to abundance spells, and put salt on a tray and draw magickal symbols in the salt.

I decided to add to my salt collection for this challenge.

I have:

  • Sea salt
  • Himalayan pink salt
  • Lavender scented Epsom salt
  • Lavender salt (12 parts sea salt to 1 part lavender flowers)
  • Rose salt (Himalayan pink salt and rose petals)
  • Black salt (sea salt, dragon’s blood incense ash, black pepper, black chalk dust)
  • & Dragon salt (3 parts sea salt, 1 part paprika, 1 part crushed red pepper, 1 part burnt rosemary)

I am adding Magickal Unicorn Salt. This one is edible, and it is supposed to be magickal because it goes with anything on your menu!

It is a blend of sea salt, smoked paprika, garlic, and rosemary. Some chefs put celery seed in as well, but I left it out because celery has never been a favorite of mine.

I blended them all with my new mortar and pestle and stored it in a recycled jam jar.

My next addition will be Dragon Smoke Bath Salt for prosperity: 1 cup salt, 5 drops of cherry oil and 2 drops of anise oil.

Challenge Entry: Dealing in the Divine - Deific Witch :pink_heart:
I have always felt a connection with Bastet, Gaia, and the Mother Goddess. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had a love for cats, nature, and the moon and the stars. These three Goddesses are dearly beloved and cherished by me, and They are always there for me when I need them. Every day, I say good morning to Them, thank Them for another beautiful day, and I give Them offerings. For this challenge, I would like to focus on Bastet. She’s had quite the strong presence with me the past several months. The other day, I got a new cloth for Her altar after cleaning it:

I always keep my prayer diary to Her on Her altar, so I can write my prayers and gratitudes to Her when needed. I always speak with Her respectfully and I have casual conversations with Her after our meditations together, if She were one of my friends, because She is. I genuinely believe that every cat I’ve come across in my life are Her, or sent to me by Her, so I try to donate to animal shelters helping them and I will feed and pet any stray cats I see during my river walks.

I offer Her perfume, honey, sweets, milk, and incense every day. She enjoys the homemade cakes and cookies the most, I’ve come to find. I always give Her the biggest piece :cake: :cookie:

She has the most pages out of the three Goddesses I work with, in the Goddesses section of my Book of Shadows binder. I have around 75 pages’ worth of information on Her. I like to receive and read books about Her lore and history. I feel connected to Her and understanding of Her more when doing so. :notebook_with_decorative_cover: :cherry_blossom:

Bastet has saved my life many times. I owe Her my heart and so much more. I strive to live my life in honor of Her the best I can. Dua Bastet! :black_cat: :heartpulse: :sparkles:

Challenge Entry: Heed the Call of Crystals - Crystal Collector :gem:
I love using crystals in my spells, as well as just collecting them because I love pretty shiny rocks :heartpulse::sparkles:

My special protection amulet is a crescent moon-shaped rose quartz necklace, and I have an empath protection bag of crystals that I always keep on my person. (credits and much love to @Artemisia for the empath protection bag spell :pink_heart: :pink_heart: :pink_heart:)

My favorite crystals are rose quartz, angel aura quartz, rainbow aura quartz, golden citrine, pink cats eye, strawberry quartz, opalite, and amethyst.

Alright, I’ve got 14 missing badges and my random number generator picked 10, 11, and 13. Number 10 in my list is a Yule challenge so I’m going to skip that one and do it closer to the Solstice.

It looks like I’ll be doing:

- A Journey of Change
- Lunisolar Calendar and Chinese New Year
- Consecration

After having so many years of survival issues with my root chakra, I have decided now is a good time for a good grounding focus for my challenge entries. I have been meditating nightly for quite some time, and I credit that for helping me get to a point of awareness I was unable to achieve before. However, one recent grounding meditation seemed to cause a cramp in my foot when I did it, last night! Not sure what that was about, so I choose to work around it.

Challenge Entry 1- Of the Element Earth

Trigger? Health reactions

I remember when I first heard about parrots eating clay.

It was strange and astounding for the researchers until they looked at what else the birds ate. Otherwise poisonous foods became edible when the birds ate clay.

I did some more research and found that food allergies appearing later in life may be a symptom of toxins building up in the body. I decided to try a combination of zeolite and bentonite

So far, I have been taking 1/3 dose for one full month. My side effects have been an odd sense of fullness in my stomach, easier evacuation, and frequent (though not uncomfortable) bile dumps. I can’t say I’m eating less or losing weight, since my body doesn’t show such changes for at least six months. Those weren’t the focus of the experiment in the first place.

In 2020, a neighbor bought an old book about poisons written in 1955. An overdose of Vitamin A was listed as a heavy metal poisoning and listed several of my allergy symptoms as the side effects. When I attempted to remove the allergen from my diet, I noticed that many companies were fortifying non A containing foods, so finding something I could eat without A or sulphur was extremely difficult. I still have to eat! Thus, I’m researching the removal of allergens from my system in other ways.

So far, I have noticed a reduction in rashes when I eat something containing moderate levels of vitamin A and sulphur like romaine lettuce with ranch dressing. I have tested garlic butter on breadsticks and did still have allergy symptoms, but my system has been bombarded with A, garlic, and eggs at high doses for most of my life. If I can get my sensitivity down to being able to eat an egg or garlic toast once a month, I’ll be happy.

Other symptoms of vitamin A allergy include not being able to wear sunscreen or makeup.

Hmm. Sunlight burns my skin and I can’t handle garlic. Food choices are limited to red meat. It looks like I am a vampire!

:rofl::rofl: All that research just to discover you are a vampire.:rofl::rofl: love it!

I do wish you lots of luck on finding things you can eat and send love your way :purple_heart::purple_heart::purple_heart::people_hugging::people_hugging::people_hugging:

When I saw this challenge, I thought the same thing & that I needed to check the sheet I made in Google Docs because I’ve missed quite a few since chaos ensued over here

I will check it now; I’m sad I missed the 200th challenge, but now is not the time to worry about that. I’m off to Google Docs to see which ones I’ve missed! :hugs:

@georgia a lot good work done on your part and I don’t think being a vampire is all that bad, there has to be some good points!

@Nhaama I loved  your challenge entries too! They seemed very fitting for you!

@Sivonnah and @Mystique, I have to check the sheet I made in Google Docs to figure out which ones I’m doing too. I haven’t decided if I will go in the order that I missed starting with the oldest or if I should use a number generator like @MeganB did…I have to get through this part before I can enter anything

Challenge Entry - :handshake: One Witch to Another – Keeper of Knowledge

One of the stories that I grew up with from my family was about the Grey Man Ghost. We used to vacation many summers at Pawley’s Island, South Carolina. It was a long standing family tradition and as such every time we’d go my mother or grandmother would treat us to tales of the Grey Man Ghost.

It’s been many a year since I’ve heard the story and neither my grandmother (who passed a decade ago) nor my mother (who has Lewy Body Dementia) can tell the tale any longer. So I opted to do what one does, and look online.

I had forgotten that he is said to appear before hurricanes or storms as a possible warning.

Although there are many variations of the legend, most say the Gray Man was first seen in 1822

I’m not sure I ever heard this version of who he was but I’ll share

The Gray Man of Pawleys Island is said to have been the fiancé of a woman who lived in the Pawleys Island area.

According to legend, he was killed in a freak accident on his way to reunite with his fiancé. Struck by grief, the woman was inconsolable. She would walk the beach in her sadness, with seemingly no direction to go. One late afternoon on one of these walks, she saw a man dressed in gray, a man she recognized as her long-dead lover.

Upon approaching him though, he vanished.

Distraught after seemingly losing the love of her life a second time, she took to her room in tears. Her family could do nothing to comfort her.

That night, in her dreams, the Man in Gray again appeared to her. However, this time, he brought a warning of a violent and dangerous storm.

Upon waking, she quickly told her family that they needed to leave the area. Her family, concerned for her mental health, opted to instead take her to see a doctor in Charleston.

That day, the Great Storm of 1822 struck the area.

Thankfully for the widow, she and her family were gone by the time the hurricane arrived. Once they returned, they found the region incredibly damaged.

She eventually made her way to her house, which was left in perfect condition, as if a storm had never been in the area.

And thus, the story of the Gray Man of Pawleys Island was born.

Since then he has been sighted by residents in 2018 before Hurricane Florence and in 2022 with Hurricane Ian.

I always wanted to see him, not because I wanted a storm or hurricane to approach but I suppose I wanted to be connected to the local lore. Thankfully it never happened on any of our trips.

A lovely article about the Grey Man ghost.
