🔄 Weekly Witchy CHALLENGE - The Art of Substitutions

Merry meet!

Thank you once again to all those who joined in last week’s Weekly Witchy Challenge - A Witch’s Incense :incense:

After rolling up resins and herbs to bask in sensational magickal scents, we’re hitting the books this week :books:

The theme for this week’s challenge was inspired by the clever @starborn and is…

Substitutions Challenge

:open_book: :arrows_counterclockwise: The Art of Substitutions :twisted_rightwards_arrows: :herb:

There’s a spell you’d like to cast, but you’re missing one or more ingredients. What do you do?

Those new to the Craft may feel that, without an ingredient or too, their only choice is to call off the spell. But that doesn’t have to be the case! Rest assured that, with a little magickal knowledge, you can keep on casting with or without all the ingredients on the spell list :mage:

How? Substitutions!

Substitutions are the act of taking one ingredient in a spell or ritual recipe and exchanging it for another item. The new item should have the same or very similar importance as the item it is replacing. This may be in purpose, fragrance, taste, color, association, etc.

By substituting items in magick, the caster is able to successfully cast spells even if they don’t have all of the listed ingredients. Studying substitutions also helps to deepen one’s understanding of the bonds between things and the many connections throughout the world :globe_with_meridians:

This week’s challenge is all about magickal substitutions - how you choose to take on this theme is up to you.

So are you ready? Because it’s…

CHALLENGE TIME!

Substitutions 101: How Do You Make Substitutions? :open_book:

Whether you’re new to the idea of substitutions or get excited about magickal theory, a great place to begin is at the beginning. For your entry this week, consider exploring how substitutions can be made in spellwork.

How to Substitute Spell Ingredients?

Substitute by purpose: If, for example, a love spell calls for Honeysuckle but you don’t have it, use a Carnation instead. If a prosperity spell requires Blessed Thystle, you may use Basil instead.

Substitute by fragrance: When making anointing oils and other potions, the fragrance of the ingredient can be substituted by a similar one.

Follow your intuition. Ask yourself “If instead of casting a spell I was cooking, what ingredient would I use to substitute this?”

Finding Substitutions :mag:

Once you understand how substitutions work, it’s time to start exploring possible substitutions! One of the best ways to find items related to other items is by looking at lists of Magickal Correspondences.

Magickal correspondences are a fundamental concept in many occult practices, serving as a system of symbolic associations that connect different elements of the universe.

They are based on the idea of “as above, so below,” which suggests that there are meaningful connections between the macrocosm (the universe) and the microcosm (the individual).

From Spells8: Magickal Correspondences

If, for example, a spell requires the use of lavender for relaxation but you are allergic to lavender, you could look at a list of Herbal Correspondences to find other herbs that are also used for relaxation (such as chamomile or lemon balm).

In another example, if you were making incense or a magickal oil and needed a certain scent, you could use a Fragrance Substitution List to find other ingredients that have a similar scent.

Unviersal Substitutors :globe_with_meridians:

Does the idea of substitutions make your head spin? No worries - you’ll be happy to know that there are a special few ingredients known as “universal”. These items work as a “stand-in” for all other missing ingredients, similar to place holder.

For your entry this week, consider learning about or working with a universal ingredient.

Make the Switch! :arrows_counterclockwise:

Understand the idea of substitutions and know how to find some? Great! If you’re ready to put theory into practice, why not take a spell (such as one you don’t have all the ingredients for) and make some switches that will allow you to still carry out the spell. Give it a go! :magic_wand:

Not sure what spell to practice with? There are plenty in the spells tag and in the Spells8 Spell Collections.

Challenge Entry

As a witch on a budget I substitute all the time! The correspondence chart on here is my friend.:orange_heart: The correspondence book on amazon is definitely on the top of my wish list! I’ve even substituted tarot cards in place of elemental candles for a ritual on a windy solstice! And if i cant find a substitute on the chart, or the subscription doesnt feel right, i use my intuition :consecrate_spell:

Challenge Entry – The Art of Substitutions

I make substitutions when I don’t have an ingredient, but also when the spell calls for dangerous plants or rare or threatened species. Here are some substitutions for those occasions.
Rare or threatened species:

  • White Sage – any other sage, rosemary, angelica root
  • Balm of Gilead – blend of lemon balm and lavender
  • Goldenseal – Oregon grape root
  • False Unicorn Root – any other herb for love or lust
  • Sweetgrass – blend of meadowsweet and rosemary
  • Sandalwood – blend of anise and willow bark
  • Dragon’s Blood Resin – blend of cloves and cayenne pepper

Dangerous plants:

  • Aconite (Wolfsbane) – angelica root or Solomon’s seal root
  • Belladonna – blend of witch hazel and catnip
  • Hemlock – blend of lobelia, pine needles, and lime peel
  • Mandrake root – whole ginger root or apples
  • Mugwort – blend of jasmine and hops
  • Rue – any other herb for warding or banishing
  • Wormwood – blend of crushed lemon seeds and tea leaves
  • Yew – cedar tips or juniper sprigs

Hi bj. Thank you so much for putting down the dangerous plants that you cannot use for substitutions :witch_wisdom:

You are welcome. Please be advised that this is not a complete list. There are many reasons why a plant could be dangerous.
• Pets react differently to substances that are deemed safe for humans.
• Children could react to even a small amount that would not bother an adult.
• Plants that are different species could have the same common name, so find out the scientific name to be sure of what you are working with.
• Substituting an herb in a spell jar recipe with another of the same intention is a safe practice, but doing so in a tea, exilir, bath salt, oil, incense, etc. would not be a good idea without doing some research.
• One part of a plant may not be toxic but another part such as the fruit, seed, or root might be toxic.
• Plants grown in different regions and soils can have different levels of toxins in them.
• One book says you can make a tea out of mugwort, another says it is toxic and to not consume it. Another says is causes miscarriage, and another says the opposite. I would avoid it during pregnancy. Don’t rely on just one source when doing your research.
• Be safe!

Challenge Entry

Once upon a time, I learned that to get a troublesome neighbor to move, braid together thistles and nettles and throw the braid on their doorstep. Be ready to move, yourself.

In New Mexico, thistles are tumbleweeds. We don’t have nettles. Substitute…

Lemon juice and garlic combine to form a scent reminiscent of skunk. Local smokers wouldn’t notice, hiding the magick behind their own recreation or pain killer.

I love substituting! Being a chaos witch, I do it all the time! I’m going to look into some of my spells later today and see what good substitutions I have used. This will be a fun challenge!

In the Middle Ages, there were clever names for common plants. Pig’s ear was mullein leaf because mullein is so soft and furry. Mullein was also called Witch’s Wick because it was used as wicking for candles when people couldn’t afford cotton.

In this vein, I’m still looking for bat’s breath!

You might be able to find that in a pet store. They often smoke and dry them for dog treats.

I looked in some of the old herbals on archive.org but couldn’t find bat’s breath. There is a strain of cannabis by that name. There are candles on Etsy with eucalyptus, cypress, bayberry, moss, incense, patchouli, and fir in the layers.
The best website I found for old magickal names of plants was
Old-World Names for Herbs and Plants, but no bat’s breath. Sorry.

Elf leaf

Pucha-pat

Toad

Enchanter’s plant

Witch’s Aspirin

Poor man’s treacle for courage

Tears of a baboon for willpower

Devil’s plaything for emotional strength

And Corpse candles for determination.

Horehound, lavender, patchouli, sage, vervain, willow, garlic, dill juice, yarrow, and mullein!

Oh, and a flitter-mouse is a bat!

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Challenge Entry - The Art of Substitutions

I had planned on finishing my incense cones last week but was missing an ingredient - the binder. Today I finally found my Gum Arabic and substituted that for Makko powder.

and inspired by Megan’s post I used aluminum foil and cardboard.
