There has been a lot of talk the last few days about mirrors and mirror boxes, so I figured I could hop in and explain what they are, how to use them, and how to make one for yourself!
What is a mirror box?
A mirror box is exactly as it sounds - a box made of mirrors! These are created and used for many reasons and their uses are pretty infinite. Think about the way a mirror works. You stand in front of it and see things reflected back at you. Stand between two mirrors and see an infinite reflection in both directions. Stand in a room made of mirrors and it’s like entering a portal to another dimension, the amplification of the reflections is exponential!

Mirrors themselves a reflective (duh!) and thus can be used to reflect energy and intentions. Each of these visualizations has a mundane use and explanation, but it can also be applied to our magic. We can use mirrors to amplify our spell’s intention, reflect energy back onto someone or something else, or create a loop of energy through the infinite reflections of mirrors on all sides.
Many Intentions In One Object
As I said above, a mirror box can be used for many different intentions. If you want to amplify the power of your spell, place it in front of a mirror. If you want to reflect energy back at someone, such as a return to sender, place your spell in a mirror box. If you want to charge a sigil faster, place it in a mirror box!
Here is a short list of intentions and spells you might find useful with a mirror box:
- return to sender
- binding
- banishing
- self-love
- sigil charging
- crystal charging
- true reflections (e.g. forcing others to see what they’ve done)
Making a Mirror Box
Depending on your tools and crafting capability, all you really need is a box and some mirrors. You can use a pre-made wooden box like the one below which I picked up at the craft store. You can also find mirror tiles at most craft stores, usually in the section for miniatures or dollhouses. Glue the mirrors into the box in whatever way works best and that’s it!
You can take this crafting a step further by including sigils between the box and mirror. You can cleanse and consecrate the box if you feel the need to. You can also decorate the outside of the box for different intentions such as banishing, binding, or amplification.
If you don’t have access to tiny mirrors, you have another option – aluminum foil! It may not be a mirror but it counts as a reflective surface, in my opinion. You can also use a reflective paint if that suits your needs better.
Mirror Box Alternatives
If you are not a fan of boxes or have limited supplies, you have options, too! Here are three alternatives to a mirror box that anyone can use and adapt for their practice.
Compact Mirror
If you wear powder makeup, chances are you probably already have one of these lying around somewhere. Keep an old makeup tin and use it as a mirror box. Simply place your subject inside and close it up. This will not work well for objects that need to be placed inside, but it is small enough for slips of paper with sigils, affirmations, or taglocks on them.

If you do not wear makeup, you can usually find small compact mirrors at dollar stores or in the cosmetic departments of most stores. They are usually inexpensive and come in many different colors – you can work some color magic into the spell, too!
Bathroom Mirror
Most of us have a mirror somewhere in our house. While this will only work with paper and photos, it is still an effective method of mirror magic that will mimic the way a mirror box works. You will need your subject (a piece of paper or image, usually) and a piece of tape.
All you have to do is tape your paper or photo to the mirror face down. This means that if you are using a photo of someone, their face should be touching the mirror. You can take this a step further and clarify your intention by creating a sigil to put on the back of the paper or photo. Leave it up there as long as you need to. When you are satisfied with your results, remove the paper or photo from the mirror and dispose of it.
Mirror Plates
Lastly, a mirror plate can work just as well as the other methods I have already mentioned. Again, these are generally fairly inexpensive and found in most dollar stores. In other stores, they are usually found in the home decor section near the candles.
To use a mirror plate for this type of magic, simply place an object on the mirror with your intention and let it do the work! If you are using paper or a photo, place it face down on the mirror just as you would with the above method. This method has the added benefit of being on a stable surface - you can add crystals, herbs, candles, and other objects on top of your paper or photo to add to the spell!
More Mirror Magic
Mirrors are a versatile and often overlooked tool in magical practices. There are many superstitions around mirrors, but if we learn to work with them we can amplify our spells and give them more power!
