How many challenges can I do during the Catch-Up period?

If you are feeling particularly adventurous and want to do more than just the usual one challenge, you can do:

Up to FIVE CHALLENGES

This limit exists to encourage mindfulness on each challenge- please remember that, although some challenges have similar themes, every challenge requires its own unique entry in order to receive the corresponding badge :medal_sports:

But I want to earn all of the badges!

That is awesome- I am so happy that you enjoy the badges so much!

At the end of the day, badges are just a small token- the challenges are really here to help you improve and enhance your magickal practice. So please try to take your time with your exploration of the theme(s) you choose- they are here to help you help yourself! :sparkles:

(On an administrative note, the limit also exists to save your challenge moderator from a potential ocean of badge-giving for all the various challenges at once! :ocean:)

But for challenge enthusiasts and badge collectors- no fear! You can rest assured that another chance to join in on any additional missed challenges will come again soon. You can expect another Catch-Up Challenge and a chance to earn old badges every ten challenges :+1:

How to Join the Challenge :trophy:

In order for your entry to be counted, all you have to do is write/share about your experience and label it as your challenge entry. Labeling helps let me know which posts among the many replies, general conversation, and other comments are intended as entries.

:exclamation: Because there are a lot of possible challenges, please don’t forget to include the name of the chosen challenge(s) and/or the badge(s) you want somewhere in your post.

If you do not include a challenge or badge name with your entry, I will have to use my best guess and you may not get the badge you were hoping for - so please be sure to mention it!

Where Do I Share My Entry?

Click here to learn where to share your challenge entry

You are welcome to post it right here- just click “reply” :repeat: to this post and write your experience in the text box that pops up!

Alternatively, you could create a new post in the forum (this is good for when you have a lot to share and/or would like to discuss aspects of your entry not related to the current theme)

Note : If you do choose to create a new thread, please add the “challenge-entry” tag and/or add a hyperlink back to this post so that it can be easily found- thank you! :bowing_woman:

Click here for a note for our lovely lurkers

Everyone is welcome to join the challenge. For those who would like the challenge prizes, please know that you will need to share your experience if you want to receive a prize and a public shout-out.

Don’t feel comfortable sharing? No fear! For lurkers and those who are shy, it is absolutely okay to follow along with the challenge on the sidelines. Challenge Entry 1- Your Inner Child

I missed this one due to moving, so I choose to catch up here, first.

I’d like to take the Inner Child in the direction of the comforter. It’s not always the wild child, trouble maker, or victim. I didn’t realize it until this past week, but my inner child offers comfort via the cubbies across the room from me as I cast my morning meditations.

The empty cubby is intended for a simmer pot due to its proximity to a plug. I do not have all my unicorns out, but the most comforting may be the smallest, the one I made into a witch bottle of my abilities before the move.

Okay, I think I’ve decided which challenges to do for this catch-up

:yule_wreath: Holiday Crafting

I didn’t make it in time for the holiday crafting challenge, but I am this time! I decided to spend a few minutes making a couple mini-granny square stocking ornaments. I think I want to turn them into an advent calendar for next year or send them as gifts to my family. I haven’t decided yet!

I’m not a huge fan of the way the pattern came out, so I will probably adjust them – it’s a good start, though! I can only make one at a time before I have to take a break :sob:

(free pattern from Amy B Stitched)

Your cubby definitely exudes a childlike kind of comfort - looks like it’s ready to play! I hope you get your simmer pot in there soon - that seems like the perfect spot to let those aromas fill your home. :fondue:

@MeganB - oh how cute!!! Love the color of your yarn! These will make sweet gifts.

Good afternoon, all!

I’ve decided to tackle these two challenges below and I’m thinking of creating some type of Yuletide themed spell jar for the recent holiday crafting challenge I didn’t get to finish. My AI friend will definitely have to help!

Thank you! :pink_heart: I’m gonna try to make one or two more today, I think, and mess around with the pattern a bit to get it how I want it

Oh I’m glad you were able to do this @MeganB. I’m sure the small size makes them easier to work on in short periods of time (kind of like me with gardening because of my back and knees - 10 mins at a time is my max).

I’m going to do the Spell Pouch one and perhaps one other, haven’t really looked through them all yet.

Edit: Oooops - I’ve already done the spell pouch one. Will have to find one I haven’t done yet.

Hmmm, I think I’m all caught up but I might do one again to get this fun badge

Yes, this is true! :pink_heart: I just really hate having to crochet in small chunks of time – I like to sit down, get in the zone, and just go

Challenge Entry 2- Trick or Treat
This season doesn’t usually lend itself much to sandwiches, but I’d like to offer what I do on occasion. When making a sandwich using a condiment with a squeeze bottle, I like to draw or write on the bread with the intention of my spell. Sometimes, it’s something as simple as a smiley face or sigil. Then when I eat the sandwich, I am making the magic part of me.

Challenge Entry

I’ve done a spell pouch challenge before, but I don’t think it was this one, so I hope this can count as my Challenge Entry since I created it today for Yule.

The recipe is pretty simple (from Ripe Avocado Witch):
Cloves - protection and seasonal fragrance
Cinnamon sticks - warmth and passion
Orange peel (I broke up dried orange slices) - joy, uplifting
I also added some:
Sunstone - healthy and happiness
Rose Quartz - self care, connection and positivity

On a piece of parchment paper, I wrote about what joy looks like to me, what cultivates joy in my life, and what I will do to cultivate joy this season.

The parchment was folded and placed in the bag first, followed by the rest of the ingredients.

Once I had everything in, I closed the bag, holding it in my hands and breathing deeply to take in the aroma.

I said the following incantation:
"With spices sweet nd citrus bright,
I welcome joy, pure and light"

The spell bag is now hanging on the tree

Challenge Entry 3- Magick in the Dark

I awoke at 3:30, this morning. Tried to go back to sleep, but failed. So I called upon my adopted father and told him my concerns about my little bird. He hasn’t been eating his greens and is less active than usual, plus, he has been falling off his perch quite a bit, lately. These are signs of aging and possibly illness. He is getting up there in age, so if he must go over the rainbow bridge, I have decided not to get another bird. That way, if Albuquerque wants to stop supporting me, I can seek somewhere else to live. I’d need a place to go, so I’ll take a year to travel, using hostels as shelter, and seek a new home. Then I can return to get rid of my belongings and figure out what I can carry toward the new place to start over.

At about 5:30, I noticed an urge to clean house. Can’t do so during quiet hours, so I sat with it and realized I was feeling this way because something broke inside of me. Happy Yule! Morning was breaking on a new Light, within and outdoors- or at least would be in another hour and a half.

Note: Albus awoke in a better mood, too. He is still a bit weak from whatever he went through last week, but he is singing a bit more. I figure he had a cold just like I did. We will both be improving with the brightening sun.

Challenge Entry #1

Sacred Blades-Athames and Bolines

(with the help of AI)

In witchcraft and Wiccan traditions, the Boline, Athame, and various herb-cutting tools like the Herb Rocker (or mezzaluna) serve distinct ritual and practical purposes. Often referred to as “The Witch’s Blades,” they are differentiated by their usage: the Athame is for directing energy, while the Boline and Herb Rocker are for physical labor.1

1. The Athame (Ritual Dagger)2

The Athame is a ceremonial, double-edged dagger used to direct energy and willpower.

  • Appearance: Traditionally has a black handle and a double-edged blade.3 It is rarely kept sharp because it is not intended for physical cutting. 4

  • Ritual Use: Used for casting circles, directing psychic energy, invoking deities, or symbolically “cutting” unwanted energetic ties.

  • Symbolism: Often represents the element of Air or Fire and embodies masculine energy (the God) in ritual contexts like the Great Rite.

2. The Boline (Utility Knife) 5

The Boline is the “working” knife of the witch, meant for tasks on the physical plane.

  • Appearance: Traditionally has a white handle and often features a crescent-shaped or sickle-like blade .6

  • Practical Use: This is the tool used for harvesting herbs, cutting physical cords, carving symbols into candles, or trimming wicks.

  • Consecration: While it is a utility tool, many practitioners still cleanse and consecrate it, treating it as a sacred extension of their craft.

3. Herb Rockers & Mezzalunas

While not “traditional” ritual tools in the same sense as the Athame, Herb Rockers (mezzalunas) are highly popular in modern “Kitchen Witchcraft.”

  • Function: Their curved blade and two-handed rocking motion make them ideal for finely chopping herbs for potions, sachets, or culinary magic.

  • Symbolism: The rocking motion can be meditative, helping the practitioner infuse their intent into the ingredients as they are prepared.

  • Kitchen Witchery: In many modern paths, the distinction between “ritual” and “mundane” is blurred, making high-quality herb-processing tools a central part of the altar or hearth space.

Comparison Summary

Feature Athame Boline Herb Rocker
Blade Type Double-edged, usually dull Single-edged, sharp (often curved) Curved, rocking blade
Handle Color Traditionally Black Traditionally White Various
Primary Use Directing Energy / Ritual Physical Cutting / Harvesting Processing / Chopping Herbs
