Challenge Entry - Candle Spells: Casting with Candles

Sometimes the timing of things is so amazing. The tarots prompts for The Rituals of Gratitude inspired a self-forgiveness ritual so I ran with it.

I made a hot cup of Bengal spice tea and gathered my materials.

Self-Forgiveness Candle Ritual

Materials:

  • Purple Candle: Represents spiritual healing, transformation, and personal power.
  • Crystals:
    • Rose Quartz: For self-love and emotional healing.
    • Amethyst: For inner peace, clarity, and spiritual connection.
    • Lepidolite: To release anxiety, emotional balance, and encourage self-compassion.
  • Medieval Labyrinth pendant

After lighting the candle I held each crystal.
Holding the Rose Quartz, affirm: “I open my heart to self-love and compassion.”
Holding the Amethyst, say: “I welcome clarity and peace as I forgive myself for my past.”
With Lepidolite, affirm: “I release anxiety and welcome emotional balance.”

Then I held the labyrinth pendant and meditated visualizing walking the labyrinth and with each step letting go of guilt, shame, and negative self-talk until I reached the center and stood in a space of forgiveness, peace, and light.

The back of the pendant says - The place I am standing is holy and I used that as the starting point and said
“The place I am standing is holy. Here, I embrace myself fully, flaws and all. I forgive myself completely and open my heart to growth and transformation.”

I closed the ritual by respectfully extinguishing the flame and saying “With this flame, I release my burdens. I honor my journey and open myself to self-love and healing.” I ended by writing in my journal for 15 minutes.

Candle Colors for the 12 Zodiac Signs

Each of the 12 astrological signs of the zodiac is ruled by its own color. It is important when casting horoscopes or performing zodiac-related magick that the colors of the candles used correspond to the proper zodiacal color.

I found these correspondences for the signs in Gerina Dunwich’s book and decided to compare them to other sources.

Zodiac Sign Dunwich Spells8 Eason
Aries red red, pink red
Taurus green green, brown pink
Gemini yellow, silver yellow pl.gray, yellow
Cancer white white, gray, blue silver
Leo gold, yellow gold gold, orange
Virgo gray green, brown green, pale blue
Libra royal blue yellow blue, violet
Scorpio black, red blue burgundy, red
Sagittarius purple, dk blue purple, orange yellow, orange
Capricorn black, dk brown black, green brown, black
Aquarius light blue lt blue, yellow, black indigo, dk blue
Pisces aquamarine green, blue white, mauve

Not much agreement! Best to pick a color system and be consistent with it, or pick your favorite color, or go with your intuition.

Challenge Entry

I bought some candles at Dollar Tree which were thinner than normal tea lights. They still burned two days, but I had to be extra careful. The flame melted a hole in one of the metal cups, making a mess. When the candles were ready to burn out, a tiny spark flew straight up nearly a foot into the air above each candle. At another point, I was aware of tiny bits of paper ash floating in the air several feet from my candles. For safety’s sake, please do not leave candles unattended because you never know what might happen.

My spells this week have been gratitude offerings. Odd, potentially dangerous things have been happening around me which I have been able to avoid getting sucked into. A minor payment kept me out of trouble for something I was tricked into while half asleep. I’ve been able to see and remove bad food without having to eat it or get ill from it. The untrustworthy have been leaving my life without pulling me into their dastardly deeds. I am immensely grateful, so I call the quarters, burn candles and incense for those who have been taking care of me.

Choosing a colour candle for intent as svreen shot and cropped below from spells 8 chart above just so dont need to search for meaning

I chose a mango one id used to celebrate the day of the phoenix anniversary previoudly though the date itself not the same looking at the phoenix and meanings of orange candle i decided to burn this one. I need emotiomal healing and positivity at the moment so im drawing on that energy and as a reminded no matter how much a struggle life gets, overwelmed or in pain or overworked or overloaed i might be… i alway rise again even after another crash and burn. Something reminded of by the upcoming 40th in a few weeks. Suprised i am ive survived this long but i am at the core a phoenix a quiet strength to keep going and rise again even after a time of recovery… i may not have obvious strength loke that of a tiger, bear, wolf or dragon or panther… those are animals my parents and siblings connect to or feel they are like but its ok… i am ok being different… recentl diagnosed last year as an adult with adhd and told im on the spetrum… still to be officially diagnosed but i now undwrstabd and and are kinda on myself for certain things or ways i am understanding they are symptoms of veing on the spectrum. After mt working week is done i need to isolate and minimise sensory input to recoverfrom sensory overload… im laying on mybed as i write rhis. Curtains closed. Lights off my comfort blnket…not weighted but its soft so its calming. And i find myself watching the dlames of the candle ina sort of medatativeand calming way. The colout of the candle showing throuhh the glass contaiber. And the flam justflickerin over the top. Dancing in the glass and i alreadt start to feel like my body and mind relacing and findinf a sense of a healing space after weeks of struggle and pain and stress and overload…my cryrals showing the light reflecyed from the candle in the background

Challenge Entry Write-Up

Unfortunately, what I have to contribute to this conversation isn’t too exciting, but I figured I’d share the most common kind of candle magick I do

:warning: Always practice candle safety and don’t imitate my poor candle safety :warning:

Almost every night before I go to bed, I do a little bit of candle magick that changes a bit based on my current needs. Most nights, I take a plain white tealight (now I have the sudden urge to listen to the Plain White T’s lol) and channel some intention into it. Usually I charge it with my appreciation for my ancestors, and offer it to them as a token of my gratitude to them. I light the candle and imagine my gratitude dispersing out into the universe as the wax melts. I go to bed and fall asleep to the cozy, relaxing flickering that passes through my eyelids. :warning: Again, practice candle safety and do not allow a candle to burn unsupervised :warning:

When I have a particularly rough day or have a frustrating experience, I transfer my frustration and any negative feelings I have into the candle so that they can be burnt away by the candle flame.

When I have a friend who’s going through a turbulent time, I use the candle to send out my well wishes for them, and as an offering to any spirits/deities/etc. that can assist them through the tough patch. (Although, I put in a clause in my prayer that the working only affects them if the affected person is open to any assistance because I don’t generally believe in doing workings for people without their consent.)

Reflecting on my practice of candle magick, I also think about the time I started reading Raymond Buckland’s Practical Candle Burning Rituals. It was one of the books that made me realize that I’m not personally a huge fan of ceremonial magick – in my opinion, most of those “practical” rituals were a bit complicated and time-consuming. Not really my thing, but it is a good book to look at for inspiration regarding candle magick if it’s a topic you may be interested in exploring deeper!

CHALLENGE ENTRY

My candle magick is quite simple. I have a self love altar by my bedroom door. Every morning when I get up and turn on the light, I light my red candle on the altar and say something positive and encouraging to myself.

Today, I took a self-love ritual bath and meditated at my self-love altar.

Self Love Milk Bath
1 cup of milk
1/2 cup of honey
5 drops each of the following essential oils:

  • patchouli
  • ylang ylang
  • sweet orange
  • lemon
  • rose
  • lavender

Optional ingredient: 1/2 cup of ground oatmeal
Note: you may substitute the milk for powdered milk. Any milk can be used :pink_heart:
I also added some of my homemade self love oil to the bath.

During the bath ritual I took my wax warmer, lit a pink tea light candle inside of it, and melted one of my new wax melts (honey & orange blossom scented) on top as I soaked in the bath and gently chanted self affirmations and invited my beloved Goddesses to join me in the ritual. Above I have shared the recipe I used for my self love ritual bath, prepared at my self love altar.

Self Love Altar
After my bath, I meditated at my self-love altar, and pulled a card from my Cardcaptor Sakura oracle deck to reflect on for the day. I pulled The Wood card, which I placed in the center of my altar.

I lit my peach sweet tea candle and made myself a cup of my favorite divine goddess tea blend during the meditation. After the meditation, I wrote in my Book of Mirrors diary about the experience.

For me, the colors pink and peach represent self love and self kindness, so those are the colors of the candles and wax melt I chose for this.

PS: I listened to this song during both the ritual bath and self love meditation:

Blessed Be and much love~! :black_cat: :pink_heart: :cherry_blossom:
