A lovely thing happened this weekend

Such an amazing thing happened Saturday morning.

I’ve been over-wintering two Black Swallowtail chrysalises. Late last fall, I brought my parsley plant indoors that still held some hungry, active caterpillars. They seemed on the brink of going into the pupal stage, and the temperatures were starting to get into below freezing territory. I brought the plant inside and put it into my butterfly cage and let the two fat guys eat until they went pupal, and have had two chrysalises in the basement by a window all winter long.

One of the chrysalises was hanging from the stem of the parsley plant. The plant wasn’t doing well in the basement, so in January I brought it upstairs and put it in the sun room, where it rallied. I wasn’t sure if the chrysalis was even viable; it was gray and shriveled looking, and I just watered the plant around it, figuring eventually I’d put it back in the cage around May.

You see where I’m going. It’s only April! Came downstairs Saturday morning to find a gorgeous butterfly clinging to the sliding glass door. (A female, by the blue markings.) It was a sunny warm day, and will be even warmer over the next several days, so instead of running to the basement for the butterfly cage and trying to get her back in, I simply cupped her and went outside. She sat in a tree for about 5 minutes then fluttered to the grass, lots of dew and I imagine she wanted a drink.

Here’s the baby girl:

She flew off about 20 minutes later. I did bring up the butterfly cage and put the parsley plant in it to give the other butterfly somewhere to land when it finally opens.

This other one is more sensibly attached to the mesh, not on a plant that needed attention. I’m hoping that sitting in the sun room will encourage it to open, so I can set it free with its sister.

Here’s the cage in my sun room, next to herbs and Buddha.

I’m so glad the first one didn’t fly up to a corner of the ceiling and become impossible to catch - and, that a cat didn’t find her first.

Fun times - for me, anyway. Summer has begun now, I don’t really care what the calendar says anymore.

I love this so very much!

As a kid, I would find monarch eggs and raise them to butterflies as well as collect moth caterpillars from a neighbor’s tree to raise and overwinter them as pupae to hatch out in the spring. I had to the opportunity to raise some Painted Lady butterflies from caterpillars as a young adult as well. I was lucky enough to find a luna moth caterpillar at work a few years back and overwintered him for release the next spring.

Thank you for the wonderful post that brought back fond memories, and thank you for taking care of such wonderful creatures! It was a joy to read your post and see the photos! :butterfly:

Edit to add update: I did see my first Tiger Swallowtail flying last week!

Oh, @Artemisia - how beautiful! I’ve only seen Luna moths a handful of times, and only in the US south where I lived for many years. Just exquisite creatures.

I’m happy to have brought up this precious memory of yours - thank you for sharing!

Taking care of these butterflies is my privilege. They seem to follow me where I live now. :butterfly:

Just last night I had a dream that I was taking care of two little caterpillars :bug: And a mother cat, who was about to have kittens soon  Spring is such a beautiful season  :two_hearts: :sun:

Oh wow, that’s so amazing! I remember doing something like this when I was in elementary school, but I think it was a silk worm? Some kind of silk thing that turned into a moth. It was such a wonderful thing to experience!

@CelestiaMoon - what a beautiful dream! I’m happy this gave you a smile.

@MeganB - How cool - I don’t think we got to do anything like that in elementary school - all I remember is when we planted beans in a cup of dirt. Not quite as fun, even though we did get little sprouts from it. I like the silk worms better!

Butterflies are so beautiful! We don’t have many around here, but that may be because the side of the building I’m on doesn’t have many flowers.

Thanks for sharing!

I adore butterflies :butterfly: What an amazing thing to be a part of and it is so pretty! :star_struck:

One time we had a monarch butterfly (I believe), fly into my husbands truck. He took it out and it hung around with us for a while. Sitting on our arms and fingers. My daughter put it on 1 of our hibiscus :hibiscus: plants and it stayed a little longer then fluttered off

Congratulations Auntie @Feathertip! What a beautiful little girl!

The second chrysalis looks like a little sleeping bat from this angle!

Those are wonderful examples! It brought back a memory when I brought a caterpillar into 3rd grade and the teacher fed it and a short time later it had made its cocoon. It later came out as a moth. Talk about impressing a 3rd grader class and leaving me with life memory!

Such a beautiful butterfly and story!

I remember catching caterpillars as a child and putting them in fish tanks with lots of grass and leaves. And then watching them make cocoons and become beautiful butterflies and moths in the spring and setting them free.

She’s beautiful, @Feathertip - what a lovely friend to make! :butterfly:  Here’s to hoping the second one opens soon, although being in such a nice spot, I imagine I’d want to hang out a while longer enjoying the sunshine!

@georgia, @dan3, @Mystique, @BryWisteria - thanks all for your lovely comments! :heart_eyes:

Isn’t it awesome how many of us have memories of interacting with these magical creatures? I’m so happy this little girl has resurrected them.

@georgia - you’re right - it does look like a hanging bat!

@BryWisteria - yes, he (or she) has been pretty cozy in there! Hopefully instinct will take over soon.

@Feathertip How wonderful. Several years ago i raised Monarchs from egg to butterfly. Now I prefer to provide plenty of milkweed and nectar plants and trust to mother nature to take care of them.

@jayne - That sounds lovely!

I have 2 Swamp Milkweed plants in my garden and one of them is a mite scraggly. I want to plant several more, since the Monarchs shouldn’t have to work too hard to find a good host area. They’re struggling as it is these last few years.

Here’s the major update for the day - the second chrysalis opened this morning!

It’s a boy!

You can see the difference between him and his sister - look at all the yellow and orange dots on those beautiful black wings.

I had to hurry to get this picture of him inside the butterfly cage because he was beating his wings furiously - ready to get out of there!

*Aside: I had a minor procedure this morning and left the house at 7:30 AM - he was NOT out then. Home by 10:30 and the little bugger emerged while I was gone - another miss. (FYI: The procedure was radio frequency nerve ablation on my lumbar spine - I have some chronic back issues and this seems to help, and lasts a few years. Not a secret, so I don’t mind sharing.)

I was in pain, though - but my husband picked up the cage so I could get the first picture, and then unzip the cage and cupped him, taking him outside.

I held him for a good 5 minutes and he was calm with me. (My peripheral brain was trying to get me to notice that my pain VANISHED the whole time I held him. So noted.)

He flew down to the grass like his sister did, and folded him wings while he drank some morning dew. Isn’t he beautiful?

Like his sister, he stayed in the grass for about 20 more minutes then took off. A nice sunny day and even warmer temps to come.

You’ve heard of “empty nest” syndrome? I now have “empty butterfly cage” syndrome. My babies have left home! ~sniffle~

I still have some icky back pain but it’s been another beautiful day. :butterfly:
