Astronomically speaking, a New Moon is the period of time when the moon is at 0% illumination. The Moon and Sun are on opposite sides of the Earth. This causes Earth’s shadow to fully cover the Moon leaving the night sky in darkness.
There are several different beliefs regarding the New Moon and witchcraft. Some witches believe this is the time to start new projects. Others believe it is a time of rest and recovery where no magic should be done.

The Sign Of Aries
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, represented by the ram. It is a cardinal fire sign ruled by the planet Mars. They will do what needs to be done, pushing their way to the front of the crowd instead of mixing in with everyone else. Confidence and passion are central to Aries as they fight their way through life, constantly moving in the direction of their goals, whatever they may be. The Aries New Moon 
With Aries in a New Moon, now is a great time for anything related to beginnings! Why? Because this is a New Moon in the very first sign of the zodiac. Anything you need to start would benefit from starting now. Be sure not to draw on the impulsive aspect of Aries, nor forget that we are still in Mercury Retrograde! Instead, be sure to plan your projects thoroughly! With Aries being a fire sign, any projects you start will have a great fire underneath them!
New Moon Solar Eclipse 
This month, we have one of many eclipse events happening! This eclipse will be visible in many parts of the world, though not everywhere. Maine is in the path of totality as are several other states in the US. This event is a solar eclipse. This means that during the day, the New Moon will cross paths with the sun between Earth. That is why the sun goes dark - the moon gets in the way!
Within witchcraft, there is no right or wrong way to practice during an eclipse. Some people believe you should never work magic during an eclipse while others find it an auspicious time to get the energies flowing. Whatever choice you make, know that the decision is all yours!

In all its forms, passion is something that Aries is very, very good at. This passion includes everything from love, lust, creativity, desires, goals, and so many more things. If you want to explore something new, now might be a great time to explore new passions (of all kinds!) or rekindle passions you already have.

Remember, the energy of the New Moon isn’t just for the one day that it reaches its peak. Personally, I give myself a three-day window for the New Moon: the day before, the day of, and the day after. This works well for my practice and it may work for yours, too!
