Thanks for the warm welcome! Figuring out when and how to jump into the conversation has been a bit tricky, but hey, here I am. Hopefully, Iāll get even better at this in the future and shed some of this shyness!
My experience with Ghost Day comes from the Chinese side of my family, so there might be some bias, but Iāll try to be general. The 15th day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar is Ghost Day, and the whole seventh month gets labelled Ghost Month. During these days, ghosts and spirits pay the living a visit.
So, on Ghost Day, the lines blur between Heaven, Hell, and the living world. This starts some rituals to help ease the departedās suffering and to show respect for them. People cook up special foods, light incense, and burn joss paper. We also set up these grand vegetarian feasts and save seats for each family member whoās passed on, as if theyāre still hanging out with us.
There are other fun things that happen during this time too. People might buy and set afloat tiny paper boats and lanterns on water. This is like giving directions to lost ghosts, spirits, and even deities of ancestors.
On the other hand, we avoid staying out late at night, renovating, buying cars or houses, hanging clothes outside overnight, and giving wedding dinner celebrations. Generally, if an activity sounds like it might attract ghosts or involve locations/times where they like to hang, we avoid them. So no hanging around bus stops at night, swimming, or bushwalks, either.
