Yes I’ve used my ouija (my Ouija is just a drawing on paper, nothing fancy) with a pendulum and planchette, I even turned my planchette into a drawing planchette by putting a pencil on it and it worked fine. I don’t think it matters what type of tool you use. Contacting spirit is well contacting spirit, you don’t need any tools at all really. 
I’m interested why your guides don’t like the planchette? That would give me pause as the energy off of the planchette surely would be the same as the board the planchette was used on? Just my view
