I can’t believe I’ve been talking about cacao this much without sharing an actual ritual!

So, here’s a little guide that could potentially replace your morning coffee, if you’re up for it. It is a ritual that will help you centre yourself and prepare for the day ahead with intention and mindfulness.

A Simple Cacao Ritual

First things first, the preparation of the cacao. This in itself is an act of self-care and mindfulness. Take your time with it, ensuring you don’t rush. Be in the process, in the moment. There’s something quite therapeutic about the process --– the measuring, the stirring, the gentle heating. It allows you to be fully present in the moment, leaving behind any distractions or worries. As you prepare the cacao, focus on doing it with love and care, infusing those feelings into the drink itself.

Once your cacao is ready, move to a space where you know you won’t be disrupted for the next 15-20 minutes. This space is a sanctuary, a place where you can be with your thoughts and feelings. But that doesn’t mean you have to be alone if you have someone who wishes to join the ritual with you. You can have gentle music playing in the background – something soothing and calming, which enhances the serene atmosphere you’re trying to create.

Now comes a crucial part of the ritual: setting your intentions for the day. This can be done silently in your heart or spoken out loud. It’s a moment to reflect on what you wish to achieve, how you want to feel during both the good and the stressful moments, and the kind of energy you want to bring into my day. Setting intentions is like drawing a map for the day – it gives direction and purpose.

With intentions set, begin to sip the cacao. Do this slowly, savouring each mouthful, letting the warmth and flavour envelop you. It’s a moment of enjoyment and gratitude. As the cacao warms your body, you will feel more connected to yourself.

One practice to help you get more out of these moments is to journal. With each sip of cacao, write down what you’re grateful for. It could be the smallest of things – the morning sun, a good night’s sleep, the cacao itself. You can also jot down your intentions for the day, solidifying them on paper. This act of writing is incredibly powerful; it turns abstract thoughts and feelings into something tangible that you can view.

To close out the ritual, engage in a short meditation. This can vary day by day – sometimes, you might just want to engage in a few minutes of deep breathing and other times, you might want a visualisation exercise or a personal movement practice. The aim is to get present in your body, connecting with the here and now. The cacao serves as a gentle companion in this process, its heart-opening qualities enhancing the experience.

So that’s pretty much it. The beauty of this ritual is that it’s yours to tailor. Make it as elaborate or simple as you like. It can be structured or free-flowing. What matters is what feels right for you.

I hope this guide serves as a helpful starting point or provides some reassurance in crafting your own ritual.

And if you decide to do some fancy cacao dusting of the top, I hope you do much better than I did. I just made a blob of it all.

I use the cappuccino attachment on my milk frother so everything turns out frothy.

Here are 4 ways you can bring ceremonial cacao into your life:

SELF-CARE PRACTICE

The spirit of ceremonial cacao is feminine by nature, meaning its energy is all about receivership, making cacao a perfect addition to your self-care practice - it can even enhance it.

Due to its euphoric compounds and abundance of magnesium, this heart-opener is going to help you feel grounded, more connected and present in any self-care activity.

Ceremonial cacao can especially work well when used before a meditation, yoga, journaling or breathwork experience.

PRE-WORKOUT

Looking for a pre-workout to help you feel focused, enhance your mind-muscle connection and improve blood flow/vasodilation?

Unlike many synthetic stimulants and pre-workouts on the market today which can often make you feel scattered, nauseous or like you’re about to fly off the planet, ceremonial cacao can deliver a more grounded energy, allowing you to get the most out of your exercise.

TOUGH CONVERSATIONS

Yep, you read that right. Cacao can be a great aid in helping you have tough conversations, especially with loved ones.

It’s heart-opening and grounding properties can allow us to be coherent and present, supporting us to share openly, and be vulnerable without saying something we may regret.

DEADLINES & ASSIGNMENTS

Got a deadline or assignment that calls for an all-nighter?

Cacao can be a great tool to use in circumstances that call for enhanced creativity, focus and innovation. With an abundance of Theobromine (a natural cardiovascular stimulant) and only a small amount of caffeine, it will give you the lift in energy that you need, without heavily impacting your sleep and circadian rhythm.

My next lot of ceremonial cacao to try arrived earlier today! I can finally start to make some comparisons. :black_heart:

I’ll try some with my partner when they wake up. We both are sunburnt and have sun exhaustion, so we’ve been resting a lot today. :black_heart:
