Confused on deity worship

Do I have to worship a Deity? I feel like I want to, but I haven’t been called to one. When I think about it, I get a little overwhelmed. It feels like it’s something that I need to do now. How did it work for you? The only one I think speaks to me is Gaia but even then, I’m not sure where to begin.

Definitely not required! If and when you feel called, then do it. Gaia is easy. You can just walk barefoot on the earth for a start, and feel the bond. I choose to work with spirit, rather than deities, as a personal choice. Do what feels right for you.

I will try that. Maybe she has called to me. I have walked barefoot outside before and always liked doing it, I have to remember to do it more often. Thank you. :heart_suit:

If you don’t feel naturally drawn to a certain pantheon or deity, then you don’t need to force it. I will say that witchcraft didn’t make any sense to me until I became an animist, druid-in-training, and Norse pagan. But I felt a strong pull to my patron god. If you don’t have that, don’t stress. Just research what you’re interested in, and your path will be made clear to you in time.

Good morning, @underwaxingmoon - as you’re hearing, you absolutely don’t have to worship a deity, especially if you don’t feel drawn to any! As a Pagan myself my only true deity is Gaia, but I also feel a strong pull to the Sun and Moon, but not drawn to further deities at this time.

As @bethany says, just continue to research the things that are interesting to you, and follow along that path. Everything will fall into place for you and it will feel like the most natural thing in the world. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

That’s kind of where I was leaning, so confused lol. I’m glad to see these replies though, it makes me feel a lot better about not being so sure. I will keep studying and just see what calls to me. thank you for your reply. :heart_suit:

Good morning and thank you for your response!

I feel a pull to the Sun and Moon as well; I just thanked the Sun this morning as I opened my curtain and it was honestly the first time, I’ve ever done that, I just had a feeling to say thank you. I think I’ll make it part of my morning ritual. While I’m still not 100 percent sure, I thin Gaia is calling me, but I’m going to give it some time to see.

Hello lovely, one way we can explore deities is look into who our ancestors followed, or even family members, even within the Christian pantheon there’s a huge variety hidden in that pantheon like Voodoo, Hoodoo, Trolldom (my practice), you may have an interesting lineage you can explore. There’s no hurry and very often the journey is much more fun than the destination so enjoy looking at all the wonders that are out there.

@underwaxingmoon I don’t have any Deities in my practice as I have never had a connection to a Deity or God. I know and feel I have everything I need already by using my gifts. I respect each Witch’s calling to the craft in their own way. I would take your time to see if you receive a calling, if not then it is ok :last_quarter_moon::green_heart:

This is all so good! I have also wondered about deities as well. I also do not feel a call toward anyone or anything besides Gaia, and even that is recent.
Thanks for asking the question @underwaxingmoon!

I told you everyone here is helpful! I love learning and am enjoying the journey! I hope that you are as well!

It is nice to realize that I am not alone.

I’ve actually been trying trace my lineage with ancestry! I’m so curious about what my ancient ancestors believed in or what they were like. I’ve read a lot about Oshun The River Goddess and that’s so interesting. I wanted to do something for the festival coming up and see how that stuck with me.

Hi there! I was like that. I felt called but wasn’t sure by whom. I pretty much used a generic Horned God and Triple Goddess format and prayed to the Lord and Lady, but with no names.

I tried learning about different gods and goddesses until I found two that fit me. I read about Hecate, Gaia, Persephone, and a few others before settling on Brigid. I found Cernunnos pretty quickly, thank goodness. I blame the Robin Hood series I watched as a kid. He followed Herne the Hunter, which now I know is NOT Cernunnos, but I thought it for a hot minute.

But you don’t have to work with anyone if you don’t feel the need. I mean, there are Christian witches and atheist witches, so yeah. Follow who you like or no one at all! It’s all good!

Thank you for this. I feel like I will feel the same way if I don’t find a deity myself.

Thank you! never really thought about the fact that there are Christian and atheist witches too! I put too much pressure on myself sometimes, but all of the replies have really helped ease my thoughts. I def don’t feel as pressured and I feel like I can enjoy learning about all of the Gods and Goddesses without having to feel the pressure to pick one.

Yeah, it’ll come. Or not. Either way, it’s all good. It’s not as if you need a sponsor or something. I went over five years without a patron deity. Wait until it feels right!

This would depend on what your practice is. You can be a witch and not be a Wiccan. I am not a Wiccan per se, and chose my goddesses by working with the elements first, and seeing “how” I wanted to address them, basically what I was looking for with that element. Then after I had decided that, I went looking at cultures that I feel drawn to, and see what they oldest goddesses were for that element. After researching and trying them out (and it took almost a whole year, of trial-and-error) I came to who works for me.

These are who I use:

  • Air
Athena for East and wisdom (Swords tarot and the mind)
  • Sila for Air (Inuit, used for breath)
  1. Nut for the sky (Egyptian) Sorry, having trouble with these bullets.

Fire: Bridig (Celtic)

Water: Danu (many Celtic and others) and Tiamat (Mesopotamian, for water, but flow and control over the chaos)

Earth: Spider Grandmother (Hopi, American Indian), Keya (Lakota, American Indian), Ala (Igbo, African) for earth. I like spider grandmother for uses to “connect” with others via her spider web.

Spirit: Psyche (Greek), life, soul, spirit, butterfly…she was a mortal who “descended” and came back up to be a god–she represents re-birth, butterflies…I chose her, because I have recently “awoken” from a coma and returned to the craft. So, in a way, I have been “reborn”.

For the Moon: Hanwi (Sioux, Lakota, American Indian)

Night (dark skies): Nyx (Egyptian)…Day, I stay with Brigid, the Sun/Fire Goddess.

So, just who and why I chose these ladies.

Wow, didn’t mean to be so long.
Take your time, you do not need to have god/desses. A witch can be pagan, secular, or main-stream religious. It’s your practice it’s up to you.

This may be a stupid question, if i chose not to be wiccan, what would that make me? would it be pagan? I think I lean towards paganism honestly, the more I read about it. I guess I’m still a little mixed up on both of them, I’m still learning about both. Is it possible to be a witch and be neither wiccan nor pagan?

Fanciful Friday Under :first_quarter_moon_face:,

To answer, “Is it possible to be a witch and be neither wiccan nor pagan?”

ABSO-TUTE-LUTELY!

A Witch uses energy. Just to put it basically. Wiccans believe in what Gerald Gardner put together in an attempt to revitalize old witchcraft practices, and he includes gods and goddesses in his “religion”. Pagan is actually from Latin that only means “country dweller”, but has come to represent anything that is NOT Christian. Yet, Pagans, also have their gods. Norse, Egyptian, basically any “religion” that worships other than the Judeo-Christian deities is called Pagan.
I do not necessarily ascribe to deities, but I use deity names to represent the energy that I wish to use/harness.
So, find what suits you sweetie, :people_hugging:
