I just discovered that likes recover individually 24 hours after using them, not all at once at midnight.
So if I used 10 at 6 pm, then 3 at 9 pm one day, I would get 10 back at 6 pm and 3 back at 9 pm the next day. It’s a pretty strange design decision, but it’s interesting to know nevertheless!
I honestly didn’t know they recover at staggered rates, either- that is an interesting find!
I did some digging into the like limit numbers and found some data- for anyone interested, here are the forum’s current allotments of daily likes (based on level/activity) :
Level 1 (new user) - 140 likes per day
Level 2 (regular) - 210 likes per day
Level 3 (leader) - 280 likes per day
(Someone’s forum level is based off of a variety of factors such as having an active membership, how many days they visit the forum, how many posts they share, how many likes they give to others, any flags or suspensions on their account, etc.)
Looking deeper into the stats, an approximate average of likes given out per user per week is about 200-300 likes. Over the past 7 days, the user with the most amount of likes given has given out 675 likes.
I did not know that either… you’re right - that’s a really strange design I’m glad @BryWisteria came in with the numbers so we all know how many likes we get!
The “new user”/“regular”/“leader” tags are just labels I put next to the levels to give them a bit more description, the actual name is “Trust Level 3”.
As of this moment, there are currently 20 active users who hold Level 3 status. It is relatively easy to reach Level 3 with time and activity- the tricky part is maintaining it!
It is an impressive amount! But just to clarify, that is 675 likes for the whole 7 days (aka not all in one day!)
So the idea of the default limits and the incremental replenishment, I believe, is to be able to manage the concept of “hot” topics. That is, topics receiving lots of likes over a certain period of time.
But wait, why not just reset everything at midnight? Make it easier on the servers?
Well, from reading the Discourse features page, I get the impression that this is intended to be a harmonious blend of the forum and the chat room.
It’s formatted like a forum, but it’s designed for conversations to flow quicker and in greater numbers, like a bunch of chat rooms. I mean, just look at the design of this page! There aren’t any pages at all thanks to the just-in-time loading, we can navigate quickly by date on the right, and new posts appear one the page while you look at it.
Personally, the more I read into it, the more I think this is a great platform. They’ve considered so many nuances around the online community. The restrictions in place seem to be well thought out, and the features to facilitate conversation and convenience don’t go too far either.
Leaders are regulars who have been around forever and seen everything. They set a positive example for the community through their actions and their posts. If you need advice, these are the folks you turn to first, and they’ve earned the highest level of community trust, such that they are almost moderators within the community already.

Good digging I didn’t even figure out what a level 4 (or that there was such a thing until a little while ago & also had to ask about it) I knew about Level 3 & that it was something that needed to be maintained to continue at that level though.
I will admit that I understood most of that I had never really thought about it, honestly. I’m glad it makes sense to do it that way, though!
I looked around in our groups section, and it looks like there might be a couple users at that trust level, but I think they’re the admin accounts for the site. I’m not sure. I can see there’s a number attached (2) but I can’t see the actual accounts.
I think the Trust Level 4 group in Discourse is meant to act like a staff role, sort of like us moderators. I’m not entirely sure, though. @Francisco would be the person to ask there
What can I say, the love for arcane knowledge was what got me here in the first place Though I’ll have to thank @starborn for linking that page earlier
We don’t really use it. It’s essentially the same as a moderator (they can pin, unpin, close, and archive topics, create tags, etc.) and they also have to be assigned manually so it’s not like the other levels which can be automatically achieved.
I see the same thing so I’m not sure what the 2 means I don’t think there are any members on TL4.
That’s what I was thinking because when I clicked on it, there weren’t any members that showed up there. I figured that if nothing showed up there, I either don’t need to see it or it’s just not there either way, it’s something that doesn’t seem to matter right now.
I remember when I would run out of likes & have to wait for them to regenerate. I can remember it would give me a few after a few hours because the time limit was basically like if you gave 3 likes at 9 AM, then at 9 AM the next morning you got 3 more… so I would constantly run out throughout the day & only have a few at a time for a while
