We all see spells that use basil, lots of spells. But I’m curious (and truthfully I didn’t know there was a difference) does it matter whay type of basil you use. I recently saw “Thai Basil.” Do we have to use a specific basil or is it okay as long as it’s basil?
Personally, it doesn’t matter to me. But I think that may be a different answer for everyone, so I’m interested in whatever everyone says!
I did a little google search and this is what I could find:
Thai basil (and closely related Holy Basil/Tulsi) is revered for its strong metaphysical associations with protection, purification, love, and prosperity. In spiritual and folk traditions, it is used to cleanse spaces of negative energy, draw in financial abundance, and foster peaceful communication.
-
Protection & Cleansing: Practitioners use basil to create a spiritual barrier around homes. Burning dried basil or placing fresh leaves near entryways is believed to ward off evil and banish negative entities.
-
Wealth & Prosperity: Often associated with the element of Earth, keeping basil in a cash register or home altar is a traditional folk magic practice meant to attract money and success.
-
Love & Harmony: The herb is known to draw in romantic energy, inspire passion, and promote emotional balance and peaceful communication among partners.
-
Spiritual Clarity: In Hindu and Ayurvedic traditions, the related Holy Basil is considered the “Queen of Herbs” and is grown around temples to enhance intuition, connect with higher consciousness, and bring good luck.

Besides reading and learning about a plant (which is great) you can also try the “old way” of connecting with a plant spirit, by carrying a bit of that plant with you for a while, meditating with it, opening up your intuition for it. You can draw or paint it into your grimoire and write down your experiences with it, what wisdom came through, what messages you were able to channel.
This is how our ancestors connected to plant spirits - and indigenous shamans and healers practice this to this day.
Of course you can´t do this with hundreds of herbs, but maybe with the ones you like the most.
Wonderful advice I cannot add anything thank you for sharing ![]()
