Is music a part of your practice?

When I meditate, spellcast, or practice a ritual, I appreciate an environment conducive to what I am trying to achieve.

Many times, I use music to help (and lighting, of course … love me some drama). I’ve found YouTube to have an abundance of music – some instrumental, some vocal or recitative – that I love. You can find music tied to particular sabbats or holidays or seasons. But unlike just a few years go, there is sooo much!

What music do you use and/or love? And where do you use it … is it playing when you are vacuuming or dusting … or when you meditate … or with your tea or coffee in the morning or evening?

I’d love to know what you think about, use, and do with music.

Music is my drug of choice—like I said, it is my therapist. I use it for meditation, sound frequencies, shamanic tracks, and Native American drumming. Sometimes it’s water sounds, sometimes air elements.

Honestly, I’m listening to music 99% of the time, especially inside my head lol! My range is pretty crazy. I’m a lyric man, so I love deep words, but I also love piano, guitar, and pretty much any live instrument. If you can play it, I will happily sit, listen, and admire you—because I have zero talent when it comes to playing instruments myself, which is a shame with how much I love it!

I pay for YouTube Music because even at night, I have my earbuds in listening to frequency tones to help me sleep. Plus, my wife snores like a freight train, so that doesn’t hurt either lol! It really helps me make the most of the little sleep I do get, and I always wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go.

Between shifts and clients, I put it on to calm down and do my breathwork before walking through the door. Other times, I just want to space out and crank up my Bose. YouTube Music gets to know your taste fast, makes awesome personalized mixes, and is definitely worth every penny. :musical_notes::headphone::hamsa::yin_yang::heart_hands::person_in_lotus_position::wind_face::full_moon::sheaf_of_rice:

Those of us who play some instruments need to have an appreciative audience … not that an empty room will stop me from playing anyway :wink: . What’s your source of music? Do you listen off the Internet, record albums, CDs, or tune into your fav station on the radio?

When I’m meditating, sometimes I listen to someone speaking about what I’m doing to get different techniques for my meditation time, but mostly I use instrumental, because I get distracted if there are words with the music. But when I’m writing (I have two novels that go “live” on Amazon next Thursday … like Harry Potter, but with adults.) and when I’m doing chores or showering … I have bluetooth speakers everywhere.

I just love all types of music, but I would choose, Nick Cave, Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd who came to Melbourne which I went to see, Led Zeplin these types of music I like to use when I am cleaning but when I am relaxing meditating I go to these;

I love Celtic Music, Gothic Sleep Music, music that has no singing playing instruments like the Cello, Violin and Piano I am a mixed bag of listening to music and of course all the Aussie bands.

I love listening to all kinds of music - I’m very eclectic about it all. Just about any music will zone me out. However, I usually try to meditate in complete silence. Around our house, that means later at night. The two vibes (with music or with meditation) are different for me but I love both.

I do! I use all sorts of different meditation music videos. The channel I keep going to the most is Awake Nation. It clears negative energy from the home and doesn’t get on my nerves after a while. LOL!

Personally I have different takes on instrumental vs songs with lyrics. Lyrics make me think of spells, as in: words repeated over and over, sometimes by huge numbers of people, remembered for years, tied to emotions and experiences, and sometimes collectively.

Because of that, I tend to gravitate toward music that feels uplifting or at least emotionally healthy to me. Some songs can affect my mood much more than I would like! :laughing:

In general the thing that engages me most is actually rhythm. I play drums, so following a beat gives my mind something to lock onto.

Great topic and great music recommendations!! Thank you!

I just bought, and started playing a native american flute. It is a meditation in itself!

I love the haunting sound. And it sets up such a resonance … a vibration … that feels thoughtful and healing at the same time. Good for you!

The “lyrics make me think of spells, as in: words repeated over and over” by many people is a great concept when tied to spells. One drop of water in a fountain isn’t much, but hundreds or thousands of drops together is powerful and beautiful. Rhythm … the healing sounds that reverberate to your bones and soul – very shaman-esque concept. More senses involved, the more all-in you are – music you can hear and feel touches you more deeply. Michael Harner might say that percussion reaches inside you and “tenderizes” your inner self, allowing you to plant stronger intentions there. Thanks, Francisco! And keep the beat moving forward!

Your return to Awake Nation is quite a sign about you. So much of what they produce revolves around particular frequencies in the universe that resonate within our physical and metaphysical bodies. 417Hz. The “Undoing” frequency. Believed to be able to shatter hardened walls or wards that are no longer needed or wanted. It’s all about growth. Love it! I haven’t been to Awaken Nation in a while – thanks for the reminder – I’ve already got it open for later tonight. I like to have it playing while I write … or meditate.

Do you also enjoy music that centers on 432Hz? The “Universal” frequency. Some believe it works with the water in our body’s cells to help us relax, calming our brainwave activity and reducing stress. This is the frequency that aligns with the universe’s sacred geometry; many believe it connects us to divine intelligence and Gaia. Appropriate for the start of the witch’s year.

When I can, I like to meditate in silence also – just me and a candle flame. But I’m a bit adult ADD and get distracted easily by any sounds around me, so I like to have something to wrap around my space where I can do my thing in “seclusion.” Variety. Eclectic. Is that a reflection of your other witch practices? What works for you can only make you stronger. Keep doing what you’re doing. Thanks!

Quite a mix of music, but all of it uses very simple, repetitive chord structures, the exact sort of thing that helps me center myself and relax.

Gothic Sleep Music … new for me … I’m going to look it up later and try it out. Thanks for the suggestion. Going to live concerts adds that extra “something” where you can feel the music more … it’s a little different from listening to your Bluetooth speaker, isn’t it? More immersive feeling. But I like how you can hear every note and word so clearly when you’re listening to it on your ear buds too. I’ll bet you’ve got some stories.

@stephen

When I think of music I also think of the sound of nature and animals as they communicate by way of tones, pitch and vibration. A lot of musical instruments sound is also made this way and there are other sounds that the earth, fire, water, air make.

I love Celtic music with female vocals I find it very grounding and calming. I listen to it even if I am just doing my housework. I do also love 80’s Music as there were distinctive bands and artists and great lyrics to sing along to.

My path is Chaos - so eclectic is the right word. I have the Eclectic tag if I want to use it but I also like ‘Specialized’ since I’m pretty narrowly focused on specific pieces of the Chaos path… which is not unusual among Chaotes who generally practice Chaos‑based magical methods, paradigm shifting, results‑driven spell craft, and belief-as-tool philosophy. The “belief as a tool philosophy” takes a lot of concentrated study.

Studious Saturday Stephen,

I would love to be able to do that, however, I live in Vegas, Baby, Vegas, not too far from the airport, and I just have to go outside for my rituals. So, too noisy, here. When I do a home cleanse, I use my bells as I walk through the house, that is about my extent of music in my craft. When I am away from the city, I love the quiet so much, I do not want music at that point. Like Simon & Garfunkel, 1966, I like to listen to “the sound of silence”.

Have a wonderful Corn/Harvest Moon :full_moon:

That is lovely! Thank you for sharing! Those that just sound like white noise and tones tend to go up and down my spine in a bad way. But I can play the Awake Nation for hours sometimes. It’s soothing. Glad I could remind you of it!

We adapt to our environment, and you seem to be doing that beautifully.

May I ask what type of bells you use? I’ve tried several types, and my favorite (at least, for right now) is a Solo 7" Tuned Chime … one that has a long metal tube of solid metal … producing a clear, long-sounding tone. It is my go-to to clear a space of negative energy before a ritual or spellcasting. (I also have a tiny thimble-size bell from my great aunt that is so simple and clear.) Vegas always seems to have its own vibration and sound … and not just from the airport. Your use of bells is simple, elegant, and effective. Way to use what you need and not clutter with what you don’t. Thank you for sharing.
