Looking for information on Erebus

I recently started working with Nyx and Erebus but information on Erebus is extremely limited. I am wondering if anyone else has worked with him or is currently working with him and is able to share some insight or their UPG. He’s kind of an elusive figure and hard to pin down and get a feel for, unlike Nyx. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, I was so excited when I saw this topic pop up.

I understand what you mean about being harder to get a feel for compared to Nyx. Working with Nyx is a wonderful part of my practice, and I look forward to it every time.

I love her. :black_heart: :silver_heart:

I’m not sure how helpful I can be with Erebus. I’ll have to think about it further.

But you’ve just given me a lightbulb moment that I need to explore further. You may have answered a question that’s recently been plaguing me. :sparkles:

I’m just pulling straws here. Not sure if it helps lol. I have never personally done research don’t know how true the sources.

Do you have any favorite books on Satan or Satanism?

Hello @Mattie_Nox,

I’ve dug around through the forum and main site archives, but what little I can find about Erebus is all in reference to Nyx. You’re quite right about His info being rather elusive!

It looks like Starborn and Devenne have some trails you might pursue. Apologies I don’t have more to offer, but I hope you can find out more about Erebus!

Good luck and blessed studies  :books:

I’m certain you already run across these in your search but just to share for others.

If you’re looking for more information related to the history and mythology of Erebus, I can dig through my books for you.

I’ve got a few things to do today so I’ll come back to this in a bit. I just wanted to share the Theoi page with you that has information on Erebus.

EREBUS (Erebos) - Greek Primordial God of Darkness

I’ll dig around on the internet when I get home and see what else I can find :black_heart:

From the third Reddit post, I found this really interesting:

In my own experience at least, he likes the colors black and dark purple, and tentatively I’ve been wanting to say grey and navy blue but that’s had less of a strong feeling for it. Crows and ravens are a common thing for me, with him. And oddly enough, my biggest offering/devotional acts with him have been involving fear - specifically, offering it to him to take it away, learning how to overcome it, getting comfortable experiencing the feeling and existing within it, and gaining a better understanding of my fears. I’ve also been getting a tentative feeling about dark chocolate and maybe cranberries recently, for him?

That sounds like a lot of what I work with.

Thank you for finding these. :black_heart:

The truth is that there is not a lot of info even in greek, and the ones that I found basically cover the same things as what has been shared in the previous replies. Regariding the origins, I guess your best bet for infomation is Hesiodus’ Theogony. Perhaps some other cosmogonies from other greek and roman philoshophers.

Just to add that Erebos (Έρεβος) is not just darkeness, is the deep gloomy despair kind of darkness. This is the reason why in Homeric poems it is linked with regions of the underworld.

My past 7 days in a nutshell.

I will have a read of Hesiodus’ Theogony, too. :black_heart:

There really isn’t much there that’s elucidating

Chaos gave birth to Erebus and black Nix,
and from Nyx came Aether and Hemera,
conceived after Nyx joined in love with Erebus.

Theogony by Hesiod

The other mentions of Erebus/Erebos in Theogony refer to a place as it’s also used as the name for the underworld.

Dang… I guess it’s going to have to be a full on UPG journey then.

Oh well, I’m up for that! :black_heart:

When I’m feeling better.

I guess I will have to rely upon my own UPG as I meditate on him and continue to work with him.

I love the deep, gloomy, despair kind of darkness. I romanticize it as a goth and dark pagan. So that’s a helpful tidbit about Erebus. I can use that in my practice.

As someone unfamiliar with the term I had to look it up.

sigh why does everyone think I’m admonishing them when I share? That was not my intent. I was sharing information I just learned to add to the thread.

This is absolutely beautiful. I would totally buy a print of this and frame it for my witchy room.

Oh, it’s okay! I didn’t take it like that.

My mind went through a really long series of thoughts and I concluded that it would be more beneficial for all who stumble across my posts for me to be more mindful of them. :black_heart:

I do have a habit of saying “sorry” like I would say a close equivalent in Chinese that’s less… Like, admonishing of myself? Not sure the term. But I picked that habit up 14 years ago and haven’t been able to drop it.

Aww, thank you. :black_heart:

You’re welcome to print it for yourself if you like, anyway.

When I was interested in Hellenic Polytheism there was a blog I followed that had some wonderful information. The blog is still up but it does appear inactive. It is called Baring the Aegis, a nod to Zeus, I believe. Anyway, I searched around that blog and found one mention (so far - I’m on mobile so research is more tedious) of Erebus and how the author honors the Deathless Ones.

The Old Gods are just as Deathless, just as present, as the Olympians. They are more passive, surely, than the Olympians, but no less worthy of honor for making this world such a beautiful place to live in. They don’t have festivals, and They recieve less honor than the Olympians, but when I look at Helios, I thank Him for His warmth and for the growth of the crops, when I look at the starry dome of the night’s sky, I remember that without Ouranos, we would have no atmosphere (modern scientific interpretation alert) to breath. While the Olympian generation of Gods rules my daily life, They operate in the framework of the Titans and the Protogenoi. Do I honor all of them regularly? No, defintely not, but some of them? Yes. Most certainly.

Baring the Aegis: On the Old Gods of Hellenismos

Rather than being deities that were (and are) honored like the Olympians, it’s almost as if the Old Gods are the spiritual embodiments of different celestial bodies, ideals, and emotions. I don’t think they had festivals or were honored in ritual, more so acknowledged as a daily part of the very fabric of the Universe.
