Meditation - Not Just Sit Down and Shut Up 🤫

@MeganB i just watched your video on depth year. I’m going to watch your updates later for it but find this fascinating and think maybe I will do a depth half a year lol.

I’ll be honest, I lost out on the depth year stuff because Covid happened and I just quit  maybe I’ll do it again one year but I think there are only two or three updates to it lol

I completely agree with this, there’s a misconception that you must do it a certain way, as if humans do anything just one way lol…

I taught mindfulness and candle flame meditation for years, they were easier for me in different ways, but both allow for the acknowledgement and dismissal of thoughts, which I used to struggle with. I’d be sitting there trying to find my Zen, then I’d wonder if the cooker was switched off and what am I going to eat later and what is that noise etc. etc.

I find it useful to use different techniques depending on the outcome i desire… for spiritual work i use candle flame, for relaxation I use mindfulness, and so on. Just like coping techniques for mental health issues, rarely does one technique work all the time, so variety really does help.

Just wondered if youve ever considered making your own guided meditation? I always encouraged clients to try it out, you can play music on your computer in the background and record affirmations, step by step instructions or anything you want with the record function on your phone or tablet if you have one. It can be therapeutic hearing yourself saying positive things, and of course, you can record different guides with different music… have fun!

This is really good advice  different methods provide different states of awareness and we can use the one we need for our specific intended outcome.

I do, actually  I’ve written a book called Embracing Peace which is a collection of guided meditations available as an audiobook. I also have a few guided meditations available on Insight Timer as well as several on my YouTube channel

In a coincidence, I was just reading 'Chaos Magic (etc) by Blackthorne and he has a section on walking meditation. He said he couldn’t work with classical meditation (surprising given his other talents) but found out that he could do it quite well just by walking around… just about anywhere. He also mentioned that hand movements and dance also work.

I think anything you do to ā€˜zone out’ works. I have used meditation a lot and I’m the ā€˜sit down’ type although when in nature I often feel the same power seeping in from everywhere. Museums, art exhibits, and aquariums also do that to me.

OK… Let’s face it… I’m zoned out a lot.

You bet. I can’t use guided meditations normally. My mind gets sidetracked with the presenter and imagining what he she is doing (kinda weird but true). However, the voice on the candle meditations is just superb. I’ve used them a bit by now and just listening to her start relaxes me. Whenever I feel something blocking me from starting, I cue up one of those and I am set.

One thing that somewhat bugs me, when doing guided meditations on Balance is when they ā€œgive you a few minutesā€ to focus on your breathing or whatever, and you are just zoning out when they start speaking again and it makes you jump out of your skin.

  I agree. When I use guided meditation and I start to feel it, I sometimes cut the sound when they pause for just that reason.
