I was looking for some guidance on a few things… I work at a veterinary emergency hospital; as you can imagine, we see a lot of horrific things. I catch myself in situations where I have done everything physically in my power to ease the creature’s pain/fear/discomfort (which, unfortunately, sometimes is not much due to severity of condition or financial constraints) but am still yearning to do more. If I were still Catholic, I would pray… Are there any spells you know of or any particular deities to direct my words to that would be feasible to do at those times? What about before a euthanasia?
(Silly question - would I still need to worry about cleansing the space? If so, how can I accomplish this without others seeing?)
HI, @kristen2 ! Welcome to the forum!
You can cleanse with sound or use a spray. Just get some fancy lemon and rosemary spray with essential oils or something, and see if you can use that. Salt helps cleanse, too, but I don’t know if you can get away with that. So something like a room spray with lavender or lemon might be best. That is, if you’re allowed to do that. I wasn’t sure.
You can also do a simple prayer. Like to Bast, or Freya for cats, and Hecate, Artemis, and Anubis for dogs. Just a simple “May Bast take you into her loving arms” would be good. I’m not sure if you work with other animals. I have no idea who the patron god of ferrets would be!
There is also a Prayer for the Departed and a Pet Protection Spell on site. They might not be right for what you want, but they may give you an idea of how you can either write or create your own spell!
I hope this helps. And thank you for taking care of all the little fur-babies. You’re an angel.
Thoughtful Thursday Kristen,
What a hard job, I commend you!!! Animals are so in-tune to our emotions; I would say practice some meditation, so that you will be able to calm yourself and therefore the animals will not feel anxious.
Here are some chants/spells you can use during stressful times to calm yourself so that you are able to help calm the animals.
1–Ourobos in, Ourobos out; circle of life goes round-about
2-Stars we are and stars we will be; circling through eternity
3-Fill this space with joy and love; send your blessings from above
4-In your arms, fear dissolves; with sweet dreams, spirit evolves
I hope these will help soothe your soul so that you will be a comfort to the animals.

That is the tough part about taking care.
I’m not sure what your path is but I do meditation and send comfort, good vibes, etc quite a bit. Meditation is part of my path. I can get myself in my visualized retreat and concentrate on what I want to do. I repeat it 3 times and then close the spell.
I also use a witch ladder - tie 9 knots in a string and repeat the spell 9 times as you tie the knots.. If the situation is long term, make a spell bottle. Use the ladder to set the spell and add a hair or fluid from the target (taglock). Carry the bottle in when you visit.
Obviously, just meditating would work when you don’'t want to be seen but the knot idea can also be done covertly. You can make your own prayer beads and just tell whoever is watching that you are praying - because you are.
Others have posted traditional spells and if they feel better, try one of them. Do what you feel is right.
Hi @kristen2 and welcome to the forum!
My fellow witches have already come up with some great ideas to support you in your important work. I can´t even imagine how difficult it must be at times.
My name is Katharina, I´m an eclectic art witch with a tendency of chaos magic. I´m practicing magick very much through art making! I love altar craft, candle making, poppet work, spell boxes, jars and all kinds of creative magic shenanignas.
My ideas for you would be to craft a spell-pouch or witches-pouch to stay grounded and balanced, or to consecrate some jewellery or talismans, which you can wear around your neck (under your t-shirt if you want). In my pants pockets I´m always carrying a black tourmaline for protection, maybe you´d want to try something like this.
Regarding the pets you´re taking care of, you can always do a cleansing and blessing ritual for your hands by washing them in moon-water (for example) and saying a prayer or blessing over them, maybe as a morning ritual before you go to work.
Healing and Comfort Blessing Spell for Your Hands
Preparation:
- Find a quiet, calm space where you won’t be disturbed.
- You may light a candle or hold a small crystal (like rose quartz or amethyst) if you wish to enhance the energy.
- Take a few deep breaths to center yourself.
The Spell:
Hold your hands out in front of you, palms up, and say:
“Hands of mine, gentle and true,
Filled with light and healing too.
As I reach out, may comfort flow,
Bringing peace to those I know.
With every touch, may pain release,
And hearts be filled with calm and peace.
Bless these hands with love’s pure art,
To heal, to soothe, to warm each heart.”
After the Spell:
- Visualize a warm, glowing light surrounding your hands.
- Imagine this light carrying healing energy and comfort.
- When you feel ready, gently touch your pet with intention and kindness.
- Repeat this blessing whenever you feel the need to renew your intention.
(This spell was written with help of AI)

Merry meet @kristen2,
Welcome to the forum! ![]()
You do very important, albeit difficult, work. I’m sorry for the suffering, but I think the creatures are blessed to find their way to you and your compassion when they need it most ![]()
You have some wonderful suggestions and ideas already on the table. If I can add to what others have already offered, I’d say that sometimes the best spell during an emergency is just what you said - a prayer. Prayer is, at its heart, giving our energy and focus to manifest a wish, and that’s something anyone can do, regardless of their religion or practice! ![]()
The prayer can be as quick or as complex as you feel necessary or have the time to do. It can be directed to a deity, sent out into the Universe, or simply manifested by your own focused energies. Prayer brings attention to the situation and calls on (or manifests) good energies - be it healing, comfort, or peaceful transition to the next stage of their journey.
Whatever you choose to do, I hope you find some spells and methods that work for you. Wishing you all the best - blessed be ![]()
Greetings @kristen2 and welcome!
I apologize for responding late, but it’s been a week lol. As someone also raised Catholic and practices magick, nothing says you can’t pray to (or ask guidance of) St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals; he could be a good option if that felt comfortable. Artemis (Greek goddess of wild animals), Shiva is known as Pashupati, which translates to “Lord of all creatures”, Bastet (cats) are other options.
Hope you find something that works for you ![]()
As to euthanasia, as a former vet technician and owner of several cats over my life, I try to ground and relax, focus on a bright, warm, protective light, and direct that energy to release them from the pain and suffering. It’s never easy, but I feel that being there while they pass, that they aren’t alone, that they will move to a place free of pain, is important.
As to discrete, words don’t have to be said aloud to have power. It could help to carry a focus - like a gemstone, coin, talisman, or some object that’s solid and resonates with you that you can carry in your pocket and touch when you need strength or light.
Super Saturday Artemisia,
You are so simple and eloquent when you explain things!! Lady Gene ![]()
Welcome, @kristen2 - we’re glad you’ve joined us!
Blessings to you for doing the hard work. A close friend of mine had a similar job and she described it as soul killing at times. You’re getting some wonderful advice and protection spells- they really can help! Make your spells or prayers silently if that makes you more comfortable - whatever helps you to help them.
You’ll never get used to it, of course, but your ability to cope will increase. Again, blessings for being there when the need is greatest.
