A spell is a magickal act meant to bring about change in the world in some form or another. A potion is simply a type of spell. That’s the major difference between the two, in my opinion.

I would say that potions are spells in usable form. A powder, a liquid, or something. Tea is a potion if you think about it. Earth, air, fire, water, all in a cup and mixed with intent can make a powerful potion.

I don’t use a lot of potions personally. But they can be very effective.

Hope that helps you!

Merry Meet Vicky,

In my opinion, a potion is another tool. As one may use a wand, a cauldron, a poppet, a potion may be used. It still contains your intent. In my case, I do not use them. I am an elemental. I rely on my wand, candle, and incense as my tools. It is much simpler for me, than having to accumulate the ingredients. I just put my intent “into” other items. As always, do what works for you; what you feel most comfortable with.

 always kinda viewed potions as medicinal/healing and spells as energy work, but that’s just me :person_shrugging::green_heart:

Merry Morning Tracy,

Now that you say that, I guess I do too. I never really made a potion, but I do concoct my own home remedies for sicknesses, so, in a way, I guess I am using a potions. Didn’t think of that. I guess I will be a little more mindful when I am making these herbal teas for my family. Thank-you for pointing that out!:+1:

Hi @vicky!

You’ve got some great answers already. If I can try to put the defintitions in my own words, I’d say a spell is any intentional magickal working. A potion is one type of spell. Other types of spells include charms (such as talismans and amulets), sigils, pouches, jars, etc.

As a type of spell, potions are a combination of ingredients in a primarily liquid form, stored in a vessel. By this definition, one could consider moon water, magickal teas, and tinctures to be types of potions.

Just my thoughts! Hope it’s helpful. Good luck with your studies :books: :mage: :sparkles:
