I’ve been wondering for a while now, so I thought I’d just ask… does anyone here use Witches Runes?
I picked them because they picked me first - I didn’t feel any kind of pull towards the traditional Viking runes. However, all of the rune topics I’ve seen on here are about Viking runes… every, single, one. So now I’m wondering why? It seems odd because spells8 is full of information on pretty much everything I’ve looked up elsewhere so far, and always provides information on all possibilities, except that…
Anyway, I’m not going to stop using mine or anything, I was just wondering whether there’s a reason no one seems to talk about them.
Short answer is that they are a newer creation. I’d have to research when they appeared, but I’d imagine it’s within the last 40 years. Edit: looked it up and they were created sometime in the 1980s/1990s.
There isn’t a standard for them. They can vary in number of stones, which symbols are used and sometimes the meaning of the symbols.
Elder Futhark runes have been around a much much longer time (think over a thousand years ago).
I have looked at them, but I don’t gel with them personally however I know others find them fabulous. Just because they are new doesn’t mean they won’t work for you, the Norse runes were new once. @Artemisia is right in that there are many different styles, maybe see what you like, and if you get on with them, you can teach us
Here’s a link to a discussion we had about them with some links
I don’t personally use them, but @Artemisia hit the nail on the head with why there isn’t a lot of information about them – they’re a modern invention that doesn’t really have any standards for the symbols.
Also, the use of the word “runes” makes their name a bit of a misnomer since runes very specifically refer to the Futhark writing system of the Norse.
Thank you all for your comments, totally answers my query. @tracyS I read that thread, I just wanted to ask why it’s not on the site, no articles about it, and see if anyone else uses them… now I know, again thanks all!
I think that is the key. I feel comfortable with Elder Futhark runes. If you feel comfortable with witches runes then maybe they called to you… which is a really good reason to stay with them. New or old may not be important.
