Candle making

So I’ve been looking on Amazon and wondering if it would be worth making my own candles vs buying them. I mean I will still do it, cuz there will be times it will be easier. But I was wondering if there are other that make their own candles.

I use mainly the 4" chime candles, tho I would be willing to have larger ones if I was making them. I am thinking of doing small pillar candles for my spell candles (the element candles, red/green/yellow/blue). I like the idea of larger candles so that I’m going through a candle a spell, tho I would use chime candles if the spell required the candle to be disposed of afterwards.

I also wondering about coloring them. I plan to make a stash of colors I would use often. I find that I follow the daily ritual on Spells8 and like the idea of using coloured candles as per the dailty devotional.

I make my own candles. I dont tend to make large ones, mostly those that i put in jars.

I tend to infuse the wax with essential oils and sometimes put in dried flowers. I hot glue them to the sides of the jars so thwt they are visible when the wax is set.

Sometimes i place a crystal in the top while the wax is setting. It can be released when the candle is lit and the wax melts.

I alter the colour by adding wax dye. It is solid but melts along with the wax to colour it.

You can buy differnt shapes moulds e.g. pillar moulds to suit your needs.

I really enjoy playing about with the ingredients and coming up with new outcomes.

Hope this helps

Blessed be

Alan

I am not crafty so I’ve got no advice other than that sounds like a fun idea if you like that sort of thing! Good luck!

It sounds like you’ve got some great ideas for candle crafting, @Dierna_Nimue_Selene! :grinning:

I currently buy the candles I use and find that it tends to be cheaper (when did it happen that buying new things became cheaper than making them yourself?) but the one huge benefit to making your own will always be being able to customize them- you can make candles exactly as you want and need them to be :candle:

Someday I dream of making my own beeswax candles, which would ideally go hand-in-hand with my dream of keeping bees (and harvesting honey! :honey_pot:) but life won’t allow me to do that at this moment. So I’m dreaming for now!

I’m cheering for you, @Dierna_Nimue_Selene- if it’s something that’s been on your mind for a while, it certainly doesn’t hurt to get a candle making beginners kit or go to a workshop and give it a try!

Good luck and blessed be :candle::heart:

I love making rolled beeswax candles. You can order the beeswax sheets in a variety of colors, then you just roll them around the wick and voila… you have a taper. You can make them as thick or think as you please. My family usually makes them at the end of January (note to self: order candle making supplies) and we make c
andles to celebrate candlemas.

I’ve never ventured into full-blown candle making, though I have used the leftover wax from half-used candles and created new candles that way  candle making is much too messy for my liking lol

I love the mess! the messier the craft the better :rofl:

You make it sound so easy, but I also know you are a very talented crafter, Ailey! Don’t think I’ve forgotten about your gorgeous yarn that you spun, plyed, washed and dyed all by hand :yarn: :sparkles::wink:

That being said, I am tempted by how easy it sounds! Might have to give the beeswax sheets a try if the opportunity ever comes up. If I may ask, do you use the wax sheets that look kind of like bubblewrap, or a different type of wax sheets? :honeybee: :candle::grinning:

Also: question for all the home candle makers out there- have you heard about making a homemade candle from an orange?

I heard something wild from a friend yesterday about making a candle with a dry orange rind and olive oil. Here’s a video about it:

The guy in the video says it can last 6-8 hours! (no idea if that’s true or not)

Some versions have cloves stuck around the edge of the orange like this one:

Picture from How to Make a Candle from Olive Oil and an Orange

So I have to ask- is this legit? Have any candle makers here ever done something like this?

(I can’t help but think that, if it is legit, this would be an amazing altar decoration and potential offering for certain deities, not to mention a fun craft :eyes:)

Well it sure is pretty!

Hahaha agreed, @robin77! I suppose that even if it doesn’t end up working as a candle, it would still be a nice decoration on the altar :candle::tangerine: :sparkles:

I make my own candles out of cut bottles and empty jars. I will add wax dye and essential oils to color and scent them. I use soy wax but have purchase some other wax to try to make tapers with for spell work. I have added corks, dried flowers and stones in my candles. For Christmas my husband gave me a wax melter which looks like a cross between a cauldron and a crock pot. It is awesome for melting the wax quickly and easily. We found it on Amazon.

Woww sooo amazing that is!! I love your creativity @Cattleya!!:heart_eyes:

First of all, thank you! I do love some crafting! But seriously, beeswax tapers are as easy as they sound. Yes, I use the sheets that look like bubble wrap (they smell so good!). Before you begin, sit them somewhere warm… like put them in the bathroom while you shower. You don’t want the wax to melt, but you do want it to be pliable so it doesn’t break in half.

You can cut the wax sheets to be the size you want, so if you want short stubby candles, cut the wax to be short. Then you lay the wick at one side of the wax sheet, making sure it’s about 3/4 in. longer than the wax and fold one end of the wax sheet over the wick. Then you just roll it up like you would a poster. You can sort of squish it all together. You can do multiple colors (just overlap the wax).

I squish the top of my candle a little bit when I’m finished to make it a bit pointed. Let me run upstairs and snap a picture of one we did last year.

It is super easy.

I think I’ve seen some people on YouTube make candles like this! I’ll have to give it a shot. I’ve got some oranges, olive oil, and candle wicks laying around! I’m sure it smells really great, too :tangerine: :yum:

I actually make and sale candles with herbs, essential oils and crystals chips but they are only white I haven’t been able to do color yet! If you want any information just let me know I’ll be happy to help!

I’m sure the orange candle will work because oil is burnable. I might try this one too  looks like it would smell great with orange E.O. added to the oil.

I’ve used the roll 'em up beeswax too. I love it! You can add oils and herbs very easily when rolling them up.

Candle making: My advice is use soy or :honeybee:bees wax. They are better for your air, they help clean the air and are safer for lungs and such :+1:

I have made a couple of pour candles and they were ok. There’s a lot to know about your temperatures in the cooling process to keep them level and for adding scents. Mine sunk in the middle :unamused:

I will definitely make more candles :candle: in the future for special purposes mostly, but my everyday kind of candles I will still purpose already made for convenience and i think they are cheaper especially if you find a good sale.

I would like to try doing the dip method for making tapers at some point

Wow so much info and I knew I could trust I would get ideas fro you guys. I am going to look into beeswax sheets— love the look and was gonna order some candles on Etsy. But if they aren’t that hard prob just as easy for me to make. Who knows, maybe it might be an idea to make some extra funds  but we will see about that.

Right now I will prob just order what I Ned for now but definitely an idea when the warmer weather is here.

For those that live in Canada, where do you get your beeswax sheets?

@Cosmic_Curiosity Good luck- definitely keep us posted on what you find! :candle::tangerine: :grinning:

@Cattleya That sounds amazing, and the wax melter is a perfect gift!

@AileyGrey Ohhhhh it’s gorgeous, Ailey! And it truly does sound easy- I’ve seen the wax sheets here and there, I’ll have to see if I can get a few to experiment with. I imagine they are cheaper than buying the whole block of beeswax too! Thanks so much for your advice- I’m excited to give it a try someday! :candle::two_hearts:

@MeganB For science (and magick)! :+1: Good luck and I can’t wait to hear how it works out! :raised_hands:

@brandy20 Candles with crystals are such a beautiful combo, your candles sound amazing! :candle::heart:

@Sarafeena_Sage The more the merrier when it comes to experiments! And ohhh adding the essential oil sounds like a great touch, I bet that would smell heavenly :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

@Dierna_Nimue_Selene Good luck with your candle making and shopping- I hope you’re able to get yourself some lovely new candles to enjoy!:two_hearts:
