What is a Full Moon?

If you need a recap of a Full Moon, click here! 🌕

A full moon happens when the moon is directly opposite the sun from the Earth. This means that the side of the moon facing Earth is fully illuminated by the sun, making it appear as a complete circle of light in the night sky.

As with anything in witchcraft, there are many different beliefs on what type of magick should be done during a Full Moon. Some witches believe banishing should be done. Others believe intentions should be set for manifestations. Still, others (such as myself) believe that the Full Moon is the best time for literally any spell you want because the energy is at its highest.

During the Full Moon, the Triple Goddess becomes the Mother of all beings. It’s a great time to work on intuition, spells of love, and prosperity. The Power of all Magic is truly at its peak, this lunar phase is key to either accept or reject projects, transformations, and manifestations that we initiated during the New Moon. - Spells and Things To Do on a Full Moon | Spells8

The Full Buck Moon

In the Northern Hemisphere, this moon is known as the Buck Moon. During July (and Spring in general), our antlered friends are growing their antlers, showing their age and maturity by the size of their antlers. Did you know that male deer shed their antlers every year? During Spring, a new set of antlers grows bigger and more impressive than the last year. You can tell how old a buck is by the size of its antlers.

Some other names for this moon include Feather Moulting Moon and Salmon Moon. As always, feel free to give the moon a name that fits for your region!

Since the seasons in the Southern Hemisphere are opposite the Northern Hemisphere, it makes sense that the Full Moon names would also differ. In the Southern Hemisphere, you may know this full moon as the Wolf Moon, the Old Moon, or the Ice Moon. As always, feel free to give the moon a name that fits for your region!

The Sign of Capricorn

Interestingly enough, this Full Moon will be in the sign of Capricorn. If you remember from June’s Full Moon post, the Full Strawberry Moon of June was also in Capricorn! The Farmer’s Almanac says this is rare, happening about as often as a Blue Moon – every 2.7 years. It looks like we will see a second act of Capricorn’s energy coupled with the Full Moon.

As the tenth sign of the zodiac, Capricorn is represented by the Sea Goat. It is a Cardinal Earth sign and is ruled by the planet Saturn. Capricorns bring about a sense of maturity and wisdom. They are the “old soul” of the zodiac with a tendency to be more serious than their fellow signs. Capricorn has the drive to succeed and achieve goals in an efficient manner, focusing on staying organized and reaching the end of their projects. Since they tend to be more serious, they often work well under pressure, reaching the finish line and getting things done. They aren’t all seriousness, though, as Capricorns are also very selfless, choosing to lend a hand to those in need whenever they can.

Magick for the Buck Moon Moon

Capricorn is a sign of drive, success, and abundance. Continue to work with the energy of the Full Moon to achieve your dreams and work toward your goals. Remember, the energy of the Full Moon isn’t just for the one day that it reaches its peak. Personally, I give myself a three-day window for the Full Moon: the day before, the day of, and the day after. This works well for my practice and it may work for yours, too!

It’s true. Count the points on the antlers to tell the buck’s age. A nine point buck in the wild is considered quite old and wise enough not to get caught. The pictured 14 pointer is extremely rare!

Sorry, the biologist in me couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share.
Do deer antler points correspond to their age?

Yes and No

Number of Points

Another factor that can hint at a deer’s age is the number of points on its antlers. This metric varies depending on the deer subspecies and region. As a general rule, the number of points will increase as a deer grows older. However, it is important to note that other factors, such as genetics and nutrition, can also influence the number of points on a deer’s antlers.

  • Yearlings: Usually have 2-4 points
  • 2-3 years old: May have 4-6 points
  • 4-5 years old: Can exhibit 8-10 points
  • 6+ years old: Typically maintain 10+ points

Thank you for the correction. I grew up with the wrong information. My info came from PBS and the local Department of Natural Resources; so they had it wrong, too.

Methuselah

I found this candle holder at my local dollar store last week and thought it would fit nicely into my Buck Moon ritual.
The buck has about 28 points on the left side and 25 on the right. I think I will call him Methuselah!

Oh, cool! I didn’t know that, just that the more points it has the older it is.

You’re very welcome!

It’s just the perfect time for them both  may your spellwork be successful!

Don’t apologize for that  I love learning new things! Thank you for sharing it with me!

What a beautiful candle holder! And that’s a lot of points :joy: it must be a very ancient buck lol I hope your ritual goes well!

It was not my intention to say you were wrong. Often times field studies and long-term data show results that are different from the original conclusions. Continuing research can shed light on previous assumptions. It’s not a matter of who’s right or wrong, it’s just newer information gathered from more data and longer study and I wanted to share. I apologize that wasn’t received the way I intended it.

I’m kind of disappointed that I missed the day of the full moon, as it was Sunday night here. But I might do this tomorrow (Tuesday) night and push the other two I wanted to do to the day after. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Don’t be disappointed  I did my little ritual this morning – and it’s already Tuesday :joy: but I’m counting it. I had a busy weekend and was exhausted on Sunday!

I was so out of luck I didn’t even get to see the moon at all the past 4 nights. It was not all bad, at least one night it poured rain which was our first substantial precipitation since June. :pray:t3:

I tried to take some pictures of the moon but it’s been so cloudy here at night that I can’t get any good ones. I totally get it :joy: I’m glad you guys got some rain - I know you needed it!
