Thank you for this recipe! There is a reference to Soul Cakes in Season of the Witch: A Book of Spells for Halloween and Samhain by Amy Cesari (but no recipe) and now I can make them! This author suggests making a soul cake for each ancestor or departed loved one you wish to honor on your Samhain altar, then placing a candle inscribed with their name in front of it. I think that sounds like a great ritual. Soul Cakes are traditionally marked with a cross (as it is an old Christian custom; some are blessed by priests) but she also suggests carving pentagrams or any other mark you wish into the dough.

I’m excited to try this out, thank you!

I have two questions…

Would regular granulated sugar work in place of fine sugar? And can I omit allspice? I don’t have that in my cupboard yet.

I think you could omit allspice, but you’d have to add more of the others I think or it would be bland. As for fine sugar, just put your granulated sugar in a food processor and blend it a few moments, that should make it fine enough.

I think I’ll give this a try this year!
