Birthdate Rune & Birth Hour Rune - What's Your's?

Yesterday I received my very first set of Black Tourmaline Norse Runes. Prior to last month, I didn’t have it in me to try & learn them in any type of capacity. They gave my brain a chaotic overload when I would try to learn about them. The last 6 months (give or take a month) have been all about me being able to recover & move forward after letting go, no matter how I felt about the situation. So, I let go of my anxiety about Runes & started learning at a much slower pace about the very basics.

It helps that someone close to me is following a Celtic path with the Norse Pantheon. The Norse had a religion of their own called Asatru - Norse Heathenry. Through different movements of the original Germanic peoples and the introduction of Christianity; there were those that didn’t want to follow the Christian path but at the same time had adopted a Celtic type of paganism or wanted to adopt a similar belief system. Celtic ways used Ogham Staves then when the Norse merged with them; both started using the Norse Runes either with the Staves or by themselves.

So, I am making use of the Runes Tag Section today, I know that @Liisa had done a post on each specific rune with the history, meaning, image, etc… and I also want to see if there is any beginner information on Ogham Staves.

Tid Bits About Runes

  • Similar to using astrology at the time of your birth via the planets & stars, runes have a similar use pertaining to your birthdate & your birth hour that is more over the course of your life & the energies that surround you.

  • The Viking women that were ancient fortune tellers used to be the ones that you would get your readings from regarding runes.

Mythology Behind Birth Runes

  • via Vogue Scandinavia (link at the end)

Nordic mythology believes the God Odin found or created the runes. When a child is born, the Nornir and Dissir (goddesses and spirits of time) weave all aspects into the destiny of the child, including the good and the bad. They stretch threats out across the land which fix in place aspects of that child’s doom. The runic astrology assumes this is an analogy for the position of the stars and planets.

Calculating Your Birth Runes via Designated Tables

  • Tables that calculate your solar birth rune and your birth hour rune. This can be compared to the Sun sign and our Rising sign in our astrology. The set of rune stones, sometimes cards, is composed of 24 symbols and was also used as an alphabet for communication. Dividing them into the 12 months of a year, each rune governs half a month.

You are very welcome! :hugs: I had never heard of either rune reading & since I am also interested in astrology, it seemed very interesting to me to blend the 2 this way. I know there are others that use runes in their practice, so I wanted to share the information I found.

With the recent connection I have to them I don’t feel as intimidated because the information came not in passing, but through a casual context that sparked my interest. As I have found more connections & easy information for them to start off with here :infinite_roots: I have now had a set made from 1 of my favorite stones that have been charging overnight on my altar with Selenite plates so I can use them for reference throughout today.

I’ve got a rune book in that humble bundle I got, when I get a chance I’ll look at it. I’ve never really felt connected to the runes no matter how hard I tried. Maybe after I finish my tarot poems I’ll try again.

I felt the same way, it just kind of slid in there for me. I had Absolutely No Interest in them prior to about a month ago. Now it feels right & my curiosity is active again in a great way. :two_hearts:

I also think that you did a wonderful job with the tarot poems & that maybe by learning the meanings of the runes some kind of interest or connection will happen for you! I would definitely look into it & see what happens!

I just may. After I finish the tarot poems though. LOL!

Absolutely a great plan! Don’t confuse them by trying to focus on both types of meaning at the same time! :exploding_head:

Huh, I had never heard of this!

For my Solar rune I got hagalaz

and then for my Birth Hour rune I got raidho.

So…this reminds me of that infamous quote from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban…

…so you’re going to suffer but be very happy…

I mean, sure :woman_shrugging:t3:

Ooh! My Birthdate Rune is Jera and my Birth Hour Rune is Isa!

I feel like this has more to do with the Birthdate Rune because that’s a general idea I get about it. I have the same as you for that one :joy:

The Inguz rune in a sentence:

It symbolises gestation and is a container of energy in potential.

Yeah, that might be it  I feel like if I knew more about the runes and their meanings I would have a better understanding of them here.

I’m in the same type of boat about that… I honestly went for “starter” information about this because I don’t have a great understanding of the runes, symbolism, & meanings. Still starting out… but also since I have started my Rune journey I have come up with some things that make more sense:

Geraldine McEwan played the “witch” in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner in the early 1990s. Through her role, part of a scene she is tossing aka: casting (at the time I had no idea what she was doing but it seemed… “witchy” & I was curious) runes & reading them.

I had never seen them before & now 30 years later, I have figured it out.

So, I do have a set of cards coming that has the image of each rune symbol & then all the information about them. (When I get them I will share a photo of what I’m talking about ) I’m kind of focused on their history right now & not so much trying to read my own or anyone’s right now.

Ohhhh this is a delight- thanks for this, Siofra! I had never heard of Birth Runes before, this is really exciting! Looks like I’ve got Hagalaz and Ehwaz- chaotic travel, which, yeah… that just about sums it up :joy::+1:

(Although I assume the birth time is based on local time, and not one set time zone (like the Nordic zone)? Just something I always question due to living abroad )

Another thought- it looks like the first one is a “Solar Rune”- it makes me wonder if, similar to astrology, there’s such a thing as having a “Lunar Rune” too? :full_moon_with_face:

Really great job with this- thanks for exploring something new and sharing your fun findings! Enjoy your studies with runes :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I’m not sure why I typed out Solar Rune? Unless I was looking at another section & didn’t realize that I had done it. So I went looking for an answer to your question! :hugs:

Solar Rune/Sunna’s Chariot: Your solar rune is dictated by the position of Sunna’s Chariot (the sun) in the runic wheel at the time of your birth. This part is known is sometimes referred to as your Soul Purpose or Divine Purpose.

These time periods are known as runic ‘half-months’; the half month in which you were born is your solar rune.

If you are born within a day or two of the transition point from one runic month to another then you will want to do an exact calculation as the runic half months change each year.

Lunar Rune/Manni’s Chariot Your lunar rune is dictated by the position of Manni’s Chariot (the Moon) in the runic wheel at the time of your birth. It speaks of your passionate, desiring, emotional self. (However, I am finding out a way to calculate this & will update everyone with what I find out)

Wow! :star_struck: So the solar rune is the person’s outward purpose in life, while the lunar rune examines their inner, emotional state. It does draw a parallel to how signs around read in astrology- this is really cool to learn about! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thanks so much, @Susurrus- I’m learning a lot about runes thanks to you! If you do happen across a lunar rune calculator someday, please share it- I’d love to give it a try! :full_moon_with_face: :sparkles:

I have searched & searched… I have found mention of the Sun :sun: & Moon :full_moon: (Sunna & Manni) being a part of the Rune oracle readings related to your birthdate & birth hour. I have also found calculators for those 2 runes with the meanings… I have yet to find an actual Lunar Rune Calculator or information sheet about how the runes relate to you & the moon.

“The Norse still reveal the importance of the cycles of Sunna and Manni, the Sun and the Moon through the sky in the writing of our destiny.” - WeMystic Birth Runes - Thais O.… in the future, if I find it online or in a book, I will add it to this post.

It also dawned on me that where the Runes & Astrology are closely related, the Runes can be read almost like Oracle cards would be read for a person. Each rune has its own symbolism & it seems the way they are read depends on the answers you’re looking for at the time.

Currently, I am learning the basic basics concerning runes, so I don’t have much insight into that little brainstorm yet. :joy: However, in the future, as I learn more about them, I will share what I find out. :hugs:

Also, the Birthdate Rune is called the Solar Rune, so I’m not sure why calculating the Lunar rune or at the very least, more information on the Lunar rune isn’t something that is a regular “read”. With that said, I will try to find some clarifying information.

I have also since found out that Ingwaz & Inguz are interchangeable for my Birth Hour Rune. When I first posted, I was just learning & had no idea.
