Spells8 45th Book Club đź“š February 2025!

PLEASE NOTE!

Starting in 2025, Book Club will be a little different. Instead of running for four weeks on - one week off, it will be running monthly. For example, this reading session will begin on February 1st and end on February 28th. The review session and the next book club session will run at the same time. It will become more clear as we continue, and if you have any questions, please let me know!

Book Club 44 (previous session)
→ Reading Session: January 1st - January 31st
→ Review Session: February 1st - February 28th

Book Club 45 (current session)
→ Reading Session: February 1st - February 28th
→ Review Session: March 1st - March 31st

Welcome to all of the witchy book-lovers here in the forum!

:books: :mage:

Thank you again to everyone who joined in for last month’s reading session! For those who haven’t yet shared their thoughts about their book (or anyone who enjoys reading book reviews!) you still have time to do so in Spells8 44th Book Club :books: Readers’ Reviews!.

As of today, the 45th book club reading session has now begun!

On Your Mark, Get Set, READ! :books:

  1. Begin by announcing your book
The first post below is an editable wiki post- add your book title and name to the list! (instructions below)

  2. Know that you have [[ the whole month ]] in this reading session
While it is great if you can finish your book during this time, it is okay if you break it into chapters or sections- do as much as you can and know that doing your best is always good enough!

  3. As you’re reading, feel free to share your thoughts!
You are very welcome to share any thoughts or tidbits while you read in the comments below or in a new post in the forums. Just save the best parts for the final discussion at the end of the reading period!

  4. Join the final discussion
When the month is over, a discussion post will open encouraging all readers to share a review of their book and any personal thoughts they have about it. A mini-review is perfectly fine, and there will be a suggested format for anyone who would like to write a longer review.

A note about sharing books:

While everyone is free to choose their own book, you may consider reading along with someone else! It is fun to share thoughts and insights about different books and even more exciting to do in-depth about a book with fellow readers :handshake:

If the book you plan to read is already on the list below, add your name to the list of others reading that book! Please keep in mind that everyone will reconvene and chat together in the Reader’s Reviews discussion, regardless of which book you read :books:

Does anyone want to read a book with me? Any suggestions, any practice and we can compare.

Here’s one I just bought:
Spellcraft and Spell work by Ariana Carrasca Pagan Portals

I’ve read that one already but I’m always up for a re-read! It’s a good one

Ok you’re on. I’ll put it as my book, maybe more will join us and we can compare notes.

I’m never good at lining up the wiki thing, my entries a mess

I’ve got three books in the queue. I will get through two of them in a couple of days. The other is having a mind fight with me and the winner is yet to be determined. Please start your book and I’ll lurk meaningfully… and maybe learn something.

Sounds like a plan

Tracy,

Did you (or anyone) do a book review on “Practical Techniques for Directing Your Reality?” I searched on it and could only find the posting where you first mentioned it. I got it and I think it is helping me.

Just hopping in – I can’t find it in our book review spreadsheet, so it doesn’t look like it was ever reviewed by anyone that I can find.

Thanks. I didn’t see it anywhere but I also noticed my search didn’t find a posting/referral that I knew was there. @tracyS if you want to do it, I think you have first refusal. Maybe not this time since you have one but next time. Your comment about it is a good start to a book review.

Hello all! I just started reading the book I choose and seeing as its February 1st…I can join this time! So excited.

Not this time but maybe the next round sure  Remind me the authors name again, not Adam Blackthorne? I live in chaos

Here is the full title from Amazon (kinda wordy for a book that promises simplification but it really does have some attractive features):

The Master Works of Chaos Magick: Practical Techniques For Directing Your Reality (Gallery of Magick Books by Adam Blackthorne)

re: Spell Craft and Spell Work by Carraska

I got the book. Read the intro as a sneak peek and decided to get it since I’m getting double points today.

For those of us who are reading Spellcraft and Spellwork together, I have created a separate discussion to discuss the book so we don’t take over this thread

I hope everyone is enjoying their books :books: :two_hearts:

I’m not even halfway through Women of the Dawn but what I’ve read so far is drawing a sort of parallel for me with respect to religion. Though I can’t imagine the struggles and hardships the Wabanaki faced during the beginning of colonialism, I can understand being stuck between two faiths and not knowing where those who have passed on are because there’s no true knowing of the afterlife, just what we believe and feel to be true.

The passage from the book that inspired these thoughts. CW: brief mention of death of a child

Summary

As afternoon shadows merged into night, Molly Mathilde built a fire. In time, she pulled a burning stick from the blaze and snuffed its flame in a bed of sweet fern. She stroked the charred stick with her palm and smeared her face black with soot. Then, folding her hands and closing her eyes, she prayed for her child’s soul. Midway through her prayer, she shivered. Where is he? she wondered. Had he joined the spirit world of her Wabanaki parents or was he in a Christian heaven? With unspeakable dismay, she realized she did not know.
