For this week’s Witchy Challenge of the Element Air, I decided to share a spell using smoke for purification and divination.
Element Air Mugwort Spell 🜁
This is a smoke ritual that can be used to increase your psychic awareness, but also for cleansing. My intention before starting was to cast a spell for spiritual growth. This is best done in the early morning and/or during a Waxing Moon.
You will need:
- 1 charcoal tablet
- 1 pinch mugwort
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 3 bay laurel leaves
- 1 small piece yarrow
How to cast the spell
-
Set your altar near a hearth or an open window and light the charcoal. Place it in your cauldron, incense burner, or other fireproof container.
-
Add the herbs. Allow the smoke to waft outdoors or out the chimney.
-
As it does so, say:
“As the smoke to freedom flies,
May it open up my eyes.
Great breath of the mother, help me see
All of your realms open to me.”
- Gaze into the smoke. Allow your mind to become still and focus on your magickal intent. Some witches relax their eyes so that their vision blurs and images from the spirit realm become apparent.
- Meditate or follow a guided meditation, such as this one to improve your psychic ability or explore the spiritual realm.
Substitutes for the herbs in the spell
For enhanced psychic awareness: Anise, Clove, Dandelion, Honeysuckle, Peppermint, Thyme.
Magical and Medicinal Properties of Mugwort
Personally, I think guided meditations are very effective because they guide you to a place where you can make contact with the spiritual aspect of your own imagination, a tool that is readily available.
For those who don’t want to use a guided meditation, simply focus on watching the smoke. Then see what happens and what you discover.
The less you are trying to see/feel something, the more successful you’ll be.
What you experience is very subjective and depends on your circumstances. In my experience with this spell, I was able to feel a surge of energy rising from my spine and then an expanding light that came with a feeling of peace and calm I was not expecting.
I found this spell in “The Complete Guide To Wicca and Witchcraft” which is available at the Internet Archive website: Full text of "The Complete Guide To Wicca And Witchcraft"
I relate this experience to the Element Air, not just because of the smoke but also because of the feeling of abstraction, intuition, knowledge and a higher consciousness that came with it. It could be used for working with the crown chakra, intuition and memory.
