The Hedge Witch and the Art of Walking Between Worlds

Now that Samhain has passed, I feel especially drawn to the quiet space between worlds. Last week, as the veil grew thin, we felt closer to spirits and the mysteries beyond everyday life.

Now the season has led me to explore the path of the “Hedge Witch”, someone who walks along that boundary, stepping into the unseen to connect with spirits, nature, and hidden wisdom.

Just like with the veil, the hedge is a metaphor for the boundary one “crosses” to explore the spiritual realm, commune with spirits, or gather wisdom from beyond the ordinary. So, a “Hedge Witch” is someone who metaphorically crosses this boundary to work with both the seen and unseen worlds.

Who is the Hedge Witch?

Hedge Witchcraft is a witchy path deeply rooted in nature, folk magic, and, often, a strong sense of independence.

A Hedge Witch, at their core, is someone who practices a highly personalized, nature-based form of magic. Unlike ceremonial or high magicians, Hedge Witches don’t rely on rigid rituals or elaborate tools.

A Glimpse Into the Past

In ancient Europe, Hedge Witches were the folk healers and midwives of their communities, often revered for their knowledge of plants and natural remedies.

In the late 20th century, the term “Hedge Witch” gained prominence within modern Pagan and witchcraft communities, largely due to the influential work of Rae Beth.

Her book, Hedge Witch: A Guide to Solitary Witchcraft, first published in 1989, presented solitary witchcraft practices through a series of letters, offering insights into spells, rituals, and the therapeutic powers of trancework and herbalism.

The Magic of the Hedge Witch

Hedge Witchcraft is very hands-on and grounded in the here and now. Their magic is practical and earthy, centered on healing, protection, and connecting with the land. Here are some of the core practices of Hedge Witches:

  • Herbalism: Hedge Witches have a strong relationship with herbs and plant magick. They grow, gather, and prepare their own remedies, knowing that each plant carries unique energies and healing properties.

  • Spirit Work: They often engage in spirit work or journeying. This might involve meditative practices or trance work to communicate with ancestors, deities of the household, or with spirit guides.

  • Sacred Circles: Working within a circle is vital for Hedge Witches as it creates a protected, sacred space that separates the physical from the spiritual realm. Casting the circle acts as a boundary, focusing and raising energy, allowing the witch to safely connect with spirits, perform rituals, or explore deeper aspects of their craft.

  • Nature-Based Rituals: Hedge Witches celebrate the cycles of nature, marking the turning of the wheel of the year, the phases of the moon, and the rhythms of the earth. Their rituals are often solitary and attuned to the energies around them, taking place outdoors or in sacred natural spaces.

  • Intuitive Practices: Rather than following a prescribed system, Hedge Witches listen to their intuition. They work with what feels right, whether it’s art magick, divinations, rituals or meditation, allowing their practice to be fluid and adaptable.

  • Lucid Dreaming: By becoming aware within their dreams, they actively interact with their subconscious, exploring symbols, facing fears, or seeking insights.

Like the Hermit Witch, the path of the Hedge Witch is one of solitude and deep connection, where power is found in quiet places: forests, open skies, or beside a bubbling stream.

Their spells and rituals are simple and spontaneous, guided by the energy of the moment. Often called “kitchen witchery” or “cottage witchery,” Hedge Witchcraft is a grounded, practical practice, seamlessly integrated into daily life.

In Hedge Witchcraft, there is no formal initiation or ceremony required to begin the path. Instead, many choose a self-dedication, a personal ritual to declare their commitment and connection to the craft. Through this act, a Hedge Witch affirms their intent to walk the path, tuning in to the energies of the natural world and inviting guidance from within.

It’s a path that honors personal intuition, celebrates nature, and bridges the seen and unseen. Embracing this path is an invitation to reconnect with the wild, both within and around us.

I never considered myself to be a Hedge Witch, but reading this helped me see how aligned my path is with Hedge Work! I love the focus on nature and herbal magick, plus the emphasis on reflective solitude.

This was a wonderful piece - thank you for sharing it, Francisco! :raised_hands: :grinning: :woman_mage:

Pretty much took the words right out of my mouth or hands, finger? My primary focus in my life is animals, plants, being outdoors in nature so I do have much in common with the path of the Hedge Witch. I guess I get stuck on the Spirit Work as I don’t have much interest in ancestor work but I suppose that doesn’t rule out working with land spirits

I really love when when little synchronicities pop up. I was just thinking recently that I love liminal spaces… the space in between things - the time when seasons are changing, the time between one activities and another activities… the time when it’s almost a full moon or almost a new moon…

I’m reading several books on folk magic right now too… books that showed up in my kindle library that I have zero recollection of purchasing! I’m not great with plants, but I do love oils and I’ve been reexploring that a little too.

Maybe the hedge witch deserves a little more thought - the witch that loves the space between!

Thank you @Francisco for this article on Hedge Witchcraft! Very interesting, and it gives me some points I will explore in my practice!

I knew I’m a Hedge Witch since my childhood, without been able to put words on it. It feels just « normal » to me to talk to others livings, regardless of their aspect in this world. I’ve always feel weird in this world, like it’s not my place to be, and I’ve been seen like the « weird girl » all my life, even now, with my colleagues, and no matter what I try to look « normal »!:woman_shrugging:t2: Too bad…:woman_shrugging:t2:

In the other hand, I feel good on the other side of the veil, with the deads or with the beings who are stucked in between. As I think about me as a child, I understand better some behaviors I had and that I thought were normal.

In my future practice, I want to include more herbs and plants in my witchcraft, and communicate more with my ancestors, especially the ones who are Natives Cree (2 generations ago, on maternal side). I think they can bring differents points of view, and some wisdoms I don’t think about or I don’t know yet. For sure, I’ll read the suggested books too!

Blessed be❤️
